22.01.2022 What does your club do? Many Rotary clubs focus too heavily on fundraising, at the expense of directly serving their community, writes David Campbell. Over my y...ears in Rotary, I have been introduced to many Rotarians at Rotary-related events. In these occasions I frequently ask, What does your club do? In the vast majority of my encounters the first thing they tell me about is their clubs fundraising efforts. But my follow-up question, What else does your club do?, is often met with an awkward silence or a long pause while they dig deep to come up with an answer. It is my observation that many clubs too easily see their main purpose as raising money for other organisations. And they expend most of their volunteer resources to raise money at the expense of tapping into the unique capacity of these same resources to become directly involved in serving their community. So, it should come as no surprise that we are seen in our communities as The Bank of Rotary. Just ask a non-Rotarian what they know about their local Rotary club. I bet theyll tell you that the club raises money for other organisations. Many of these recipient organisations can, and do, carry out their own fundraising and see Rotary only as another funding source. Yes, I know that fundraising can be seen as an act of indirect service. And fundraising to End Polio or support a local or global Rotary project is certainly an act of direct service. But I have also seen fundraising consume most of a clubs energy leaving little left for rolling up their sleeves and engaging personally in service to their community. When clubs have discontinued a fundraising activity the first thought is almost always What new fundraiser can we undertake? not Lets look at undertaking a hands-on community project or doing a Rotary global grant project, for example. Back to my opening comments. In my Rotarian-to-Rotarian encounters, I have heard many enthusiastic and inspiring stories from Rotarians related to their personal and direct involvement in service. And I have seen clubs energised and strengthened by their direct service projects. I havent seen a similar sense of personal service or level of club development emanating from fundraising activities. Fundraising can be an important role for a Rotary club, but it shouldnt take the self out of Service Above Self. David Campbell Rotary Club of Maketu, NZ

18.01.2022 The Courage for Peace A new exhibition at the Australian War Memorial tells the story of Australias peacemakers, peacekeepers and disaster-relief workers. Theo...gene Ngamije was just a small boy when a simple act of kindness by an Australian peacekeeper changed his life. Theogene had been separated from his parents in a refugee camp in Rwanda in 1994 and thought his life was over. No day was easy, he said. I was five or six years old, and most of us were in a refugee camp in Kibeho. Bombings, shootings started happening I was scared, of course intimidated and hungry. I was seated down, crying, not knowing where to go and an Australian soldier gave me an Australian national flag the patch, the one that normally goes on their uniform and gave me a piece of biscuit. He lifted me up, put me on his shoulder and took me to safety, where the other kids were. He saved me and he gave me a different understanding of what soldiers do. More than 20 years later, Theogene is now a private in the Australian Army. He shares his story in The Courage for Peace exhibition, which opened at the Australian War Memorial on October 18. Curator Margaret Farmer said the exhibition tells the story of what Australians do to make, shape and keep peace, with themes of courage, hope, partnership and shared humanity. The Courage for Peace tells the story of Australias peacemakers, peacekeepers, disaster-relief workers and capacity builders, who work strategically and courageously to avert tragedy and build peace, Margaret said. The exhibition features a number of objects including a heavily damaged window salvaged from the Australian Embassy in Jakarta following the 2004 bombing and focuses on the experiences, reflections and personal perspectives of those individuals who have contributed to Australias efforts towards peace. Their stories are told in a powerful audio-visual production, which is generously supported by Rotary Internationals Presidents Peace Conference Project Fund, which was created to continue the commitment of advancing peace and working on conflict resolution in troubled areas around the world for over 100 years.

07.01.2022 **ARISE & SHINE FIREWOOD FUNDRAISER** Well, after 5 very hectic months of doing firewood, the tally is in.... we have raised over $11,000 bucks. Thats over 60 ...loads of firewood. Yep, thats a LOT of wood. Many thanks go to the following people for making it possible: My Dad = chief backhoe operator/logistics manager/wood supplier My Mum = no.1 tractor driver/clean up operations/wood supplier The boys = chainsaw legends/thrill seekers Megan & Keith = delivery support Chryse & Megan = advice consultants Everyone who has bought a load = you are absolute legends!!! We hope youve been cosy & warm this Winter knowing you have supported a good cause Finally, Casey = my main man. Finds the wood. Fetches the wood. Cuts the wood. Splits the wood. Delivers the wood. Stays calm during the whole process. This was his side hustle which he so very humbly gave to Arise & Shine this year due to the lack of fundraising opportunities available due to COVID-19. Without his generosity, not possible. Its been a bloody lot of hard work! Hard work to say the least but the effort is always worth the outcome - to continue the work of Arise & Shine and to help children orphaned, abandoned & vulnerable in Uganda In particular, this will put solar power on Arise & Shines Emergency Transitional Care home and help with further works currently happening. THANK YOU ALL! P.s. We are extremely proud but also very, very excited for life after firewood.
