24.01.2022 The last major epidemic in living memory in Australia was polio. Many of us might remember friends from school or the neighbourhood who fell victim to this crue...l and sometimes fatal virus. Interestingly it bears some similar characteristics to the present pandemic; Poliomyelitis is a sometimes fatal disease caused by a virus that is spread through faeces and mucous, and ingested orally. It is highly contagious, but in the majority of cases polio has either no effect at all or, at worst, no more than flu-like symptoms. However, in about one per cent of those infected the virus spreads to the nervous system, causing paralysis, usually of the legs. Of those affected in this way, five to 10 per cent die. As most people infected with polio have no signs of illness, they remain unaware they have been infected. For several weeks they can be spreading the virus. During that time, polio can spread rapidly through a community. The disease may infect thousands of people, depending on the level of sanitation, before the first case of polio paralysis emerges. 22.01.2022 The Rotary Club of Stawell has just elected its youngest ever president, and she's got big plans for the small club. Taia Hayter succeeds her father, at just 18 years old.

19.01.2022 We were pleased to be visited by members of the Rotary Club of Narrabri today. We have received so many donations of books we put out the call to Narrabri to see if the wanted books for their upcoming book sale. Narrabri members travelled over and in a couple of hours we emptied a shipping container into a truck and trailer. We then shared some fellowship and had lunch. Thank you to Tamworth Rotary member and past Narrabri Rotary member Ralph Schulze for organising this activity. Good luck to the Rotary Club of Narrabri with their upcoming booksale.

17.01.2022 Honouring a Hero: Part of being a Rotarian is aspiring to make the world a better place. One Rotarian who truly delivered on this promise was Sir Clem Renouf, w...ho passed away on 11 June. Clem hailed from Nambour, Qld, and was president of Rotary International in 1978-79. However, he will perhaps be longest remembered for the pivotal role he played in helping rid the world of polio. If you would like to honour the life of this amazing man, Past RI Presidents Ian Riseley from Australia and Bill Boyd from New Zealand suggest you consider supporting the cause Sir Clem was so passionate about End Polio Now. Along with Past RI Director Noel Trevaskis and RI Director-elect Jessie Harman, Ian and Bill have established The Sir Clem Renouf Polio Appeal.
