22.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY 1988-1989 President - Fred Glisson The lack of new members was seen as a most serious matter by President Fred. He stated that if we are not committed to the task of retaining existing members, and recruiting the new, then the life and future of the Club will be in doubt. This year saw a visit from Rotary international Special Representative, PDG Tony Rufino, accompanied by his wife Mita. This turned out a very special event, as Mita was the first Rotary Exch...ange Student to come to our Club in 1962, we then knew her as Armita Bantug. She was able to reacquaint herself old friends, before leaving for Geelong to do the same there. A call for assistance from Mrs Barbara Wilson of the Madang Teachers College. The local children were being taught to read, but after that they had nothing to read. In a very short time, two Tea Chests were full of books and on their way to Mrs Wilson, with more to be sent at a later time. The Club was very proud to sponsor and support the Formation of a Ladies Probus Club this year as well. See more

18.01.2022 HAPPY BIRTHDAY On this day in 1954, the Rotary Club of Stawell was presented with it's Charter by District Govenor Arthur Hart. The Formation of the Rotary Club of Stawell... The Rotary Clubs of Ararat and Ballarat had twice each, as well ast the Warracknabeal and Hamilton Clubs once each to establish a Rotary Club in Stawell, all had failed. However, the District Governor in 1954, Les North, of Ballarat, was not to be defeated so easily, he enlisted the assistance of Past President Lou Koenig of the Rotary Club of Ararat as his 'Special Representitive'. After several meetings of Ararat members, Lou and his President Eric Leek, and Secretary Eric Gwynne organised a meeting in Stawell with Mr John Bennett, the subject being the formation of a Rotary Club in Stawell. On 19 March 1954 Lou and five other Ararat Rotarians, attended another meeting at Mr Bennett's home, this time though there were sixteen local business and professional people in attendance to hear what he had to say. From this meeting it was concluded that a Club should be formed, and that all sixteen pledged their support. This created great interest, and by the 14 May 1954, when District Governor Les North, Lou Koenig, other members of the Ararat Club and a classification expert from Ballarat, Rtn Bill Taylor, returned to Stawell for another meeting at home of Mr Keith Lawson, the decision was made, a Rotary Club in Stawell would be established. And so, one week later, on the 21 May 1954, the inaugural meeting of the Club was held at The Commercial Hotel Stawell, under the Chairmanship of P.P. Lou Koenig. With a registration of 27, (of whom 24 were present, with 3 apologies) the first Officers and Directors of the Club were elected. They were, President Bill Cornish, Vice President Colin Preece, Secretary Rick Holmes, S.A.Arms Jack Case, and Treasurer George Gee. The Directors were, Les Harris, Keith Lawson, Alf Paulett, Frank Plaisted, John Bennett Jr. and Leck Grant. Admission Fee was set at 2/2/0 and the Membership fee was set at 5/5/0, (that would be approximately $4.20 and $10. 50 on conversion) At this time P.P. Lou was affectonately known as the 28th member, because of the time and effort he had expended in the Clubs formation. On the 17th June 1954 the Club was admitted into Rotary International, with the Charter evening on 4th September 1954, it was on this date that the seal of Rotary was set upon the Club.

15.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY 1987-1988 President - Graeme McDonough A well deerved Paul Harris Fellowship was presented to Past President Col Hall. For a number of years, one of the Club's major projects has been that of 'Vital Call'. Manyof our older community have been able to remain i their homes because of these units. Another two units were ordered this year, thus giving a total of 20 units in srvice at this time.... The Club was to say farewell to one of its long time members in Past President Vern Neisen and his wife Beryl. Vern has decided to retire and 'wet a line'. Past President, having served the role twice, Paul Harris Fellow, District Goveroner's Representitive, Assistant Secretary, Secretary & Treasurer for 16 years. The Club wished them both the best of health, happiness and fishing in their retirement. A Games Night was held at the Stawell Club, with spirited competition in Snooker, Indoor Bowls and Darts. The District Assembly was held at the Wonga Campus of the Secondary College, all members were involved and the day went off very well. Rotaract has been receiving a lot of attention with Club members attending meetings on a regular basis. The work carried out by Past President Col Hall has been outstanding, however reports to the Club have indicated that the future of Rotaract in Stawell is not assured. See more

13.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY 1986-87 President Graeme McDonough The Golfathon was a resounding success, a few statistics to put it into perspective: 29 Players... 1513 Holes 8684 Strokes 615km A huge boost to this total was the magnificent effort of Roy Williams. Roy played a staggering 216 holes. This success was a direct result of the hard work of Past President Lindsay Brown and his Committee, and it was a fitting result given the effort they had put in. Two Paul Harris Fellowships were presented this yea, Past President Norm Cottman and Past President Vern Nielsen. Both for outstanding service to the Club. Polio Plus has been a programe within the Club all year, with a target of $6500 over 4 years. Chairman of the appeal was Rotarian Rick Heinrich, who with his Committee, has been responsible for reaching our target in not four years, but two. Donations were made to a variety of Community projects, including the The Stawell Leisure and Poll Complex, The Library, and to Mr Bill Bahl for the manufacture and distribution of wooden toys for children. It was sad to relate that the Christmas Hampers were not distributed this year. The Club's willingness to assist needy families within the district was made known to the relevant authorities, but no requests for assistance were received.

11.01.2022 Colonel Harland Sanders became an active Rotarian in 1919 when he became a founding member of the Rotary club of Jacksonville, Indiana at the age of 29. After t...hat he joined the Rotary club of Corbin, Kentucky and then the Rotary club of Shelbyville, Kentucky, and was an active member until his death in 1980. He always wore his Rotary pin. "There's no reason to be the richest man in the cemetery. You can't do any business from there." Colonel Harland Sanders. Now we all know why Rotarians are obsessed with serving chicken at meetings.
