23.01.2022 ANOTHER ROTARY FIRST!! Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Sydney CBD in Australia have "thought outside the box" in an initiative that sees them hand back their ch...arter at midnight on June 30, 2014. This will trigger their transition to Rotary E-Club One in D5450 in Colorado as they become members of that Rotary e-club. This bold move, endorsed by DG Garry Browne of D9675 in Australia and DG Dan Himelspach of D5450 in the United States, recognises changing business and professional demands upon the Rotarians of the Sydney Central Business District who can no longer commit to a traditional weekly face-to-face meeting. The Rotary Club of Sydney CBD was formerly part of the "once each two weeks" meeting frequency model, but upon conclusion of that trial, the Sydney CBD Rotary club was about to lose 95% of its members. President of the Rotary Club of Sydney CBD, Joan Richards, said that Rotary must recognise and understand the changing needs of Rotarians, the community and society in general. She said that Rotary must be relevant to the contemporary business and professional environment in order to retain active members and recruit outstanding candidates who live increasingly busy lives. The Rotary Club of Sydney CBD was chartered in July 1996. Rotary E-Club One, the worlds first Rotary e-club was chartered in January 2002. The President of Rotary E-Club One, Deborah Dale Brackney is pictured welcoming the President of the Rotary Club of Sydney CBD, Joan Richards, as the Sydney Rotarians prepare for their transition. Also present at the welcome ceremony were District Governors Garry Browne and Dan Himelspach, and Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko.

23.01.2022 On Saturday 31st May, just before the RI Convention, Rotary Sydney CBD hosted 36 visitors on a walk around the Opera House, Farm Cove, Mrs Macquaries Chair and the Botanic Gardens. The walk ended with refreshments in the Botanic Gardens education centre. Photos show a happy bunch of Rotarians and friends after the walk.

20.01.2022 On 1st July 2014 Rotary Club of Sydney CBD returned its charter to Rotary International and members were absorbed into Rotary eClub One as the Sydney team. Our Rotary service projects include womens and childrens health, clean water, shelter, literacy, education and youth, with emphasis on helping indigenous Australians and remote communities in the islands of the southwest Pacific region. Rotary eClub One is the worlds first Rotary e-club, having been chartered on 4 Janua...ry 2002. We meet weekly online at www.rotaryeclubone.org If you are a Rotarian visiting Sydney, we recommend a make-up visit to the Rotary Club of Sydney. The club meets for lunch on Tuesdays at 12:30pm. Venue is NSW Masonic Club, Castlereagh Street, Sydney.

19.01.2022 Last night, members of Rotary Club of Sydney CBD co-hosted the Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship night at Aesops Restaurant, owned by our member James Gamvros. We raffled a bottle of the extraordinary 100 point Penfolds St Henri 2010 Shiraz valued at $85.00 and we raised $780.00. The Rotarian from the USA who won the raffle immediately donated the bottle back, on the proviso that we auction it immediately. So, we put it up for auction and after some very competitive biddi...ng a Rotarian from Russia submitted the winning bid of $5,000.00. Then, the Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship matched the bid with a $1 for $1 contribution of $5,000.00 to allow $10,000.00 to be donated to PolioPlus to help eradicate polio. Today, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is adding to the $10,000.00 with a $2 for $1 contribution of $20,000.00. So, one bottle of Penfolds St Henri 2010 Shiraz has earned a total of $30,780.00!

10.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS TO ANDREW UPTON - RECIPIENT OF THE ROTARY PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD. WE SALUTE YOU!!! ****************************************************...** At the Rotary International Convention in Chicago in 2005, we instituted a new award to honour a person who has demonstrated consistent professional excellence in his or her chosen vocation, doing more than just a job, and contributing to the benefit of the wider community beyond their typical workplace role. In that first year, our award recipient was a remarkable woman who has made a positive difference to the youth of America, Roxanne Spillett, the CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Since then the award has been presented annually to outstanding professionals in Australia, Spain, The United Kingdom and in the United States. Consistent with our past recipients, this years Rotary Professional Excellence Awardee is a man who has contributed much to his community. Our Rotary Professional Excellence Awardee for 2014 is Andrew Upton of The Sydney Theatre Company, one of the largest performing arts organisations in Australia, and one of the largest theatre companies in the world As Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company Andrew has focussed beyond the traditional brief of an artistic director, and he has demonstrated his skill as an inspirational innovator and high achiever in his vocational field of performing arts. Under Andrews careful watch, the Sydney Theatre Company has developed an innovative in-schools education program, and it has become a global leader in sustainable performing arts practice via a very practical environmental care program. Part of Andrews vocational mission is to provide young people in New South Wales with possibilities to play, imagine and learn through the provision of theatre and theatre-based education programs of the highest standard. He has encouraged artists and school teachers to work together to achieve positive outcomes, and he has provided opportunities for many children to access theatre experiences that would otherwise be unavailable to them. The environmental care program, known as Greening the Wharf transformed the iconic heritage listed Sydney Theatre Company building in Walsh Bay, on Sydney Harbour. This high profile and now complete, unique project, demonstrates that even heritage buildings can become more sustainable. Key initiatives of the Greening the Wharf project included: installing Australias second-largest rooftop solar array, consisting of 1,906 solar panels energy efficiency measures including lighting and building management system upgrades an innovative rainwater harvesting, storage and reticulation system, which will supply 100 per cent of the non-potable water requirements for all Sydney Theatre Company amenities at Walsh Bay. Young people and the environment are two precious resources that we must nurture for the future benefit of communities everywhere. In his community, Andrew Upton is nurturing both these resources. Andrew has contributed a positive energy that has enthused the wider community and inspired young people. For this significant contribution we honour him tonight with our Professional Excellence Award. Congratulations Andrew. We salute you.

01.01.2022 Last night - 21st June 2014 - we said farewell to Rotary Club of Sydney CBD. For all of us, especially President Joan Richards, charter member of the club formed 19 years ago, it was a sad event a night of nostalgia - but also uplifting and inspiring as we take the strategic step in a Rotary future in a new format as many of us transition to Rotary eClub One (Colorado, USA). Paul Harris recognitions were awarded to Ann Burleigh. Stephen Warner, Georgina Finn and Ralph Pali...garu. Donations were made to the Alola Foundation for 83 maternity packs (@ $25 each) for East Timor, Indigenous Adult Literacy Program (Jack Beetson) and the Safe House for Trafficked Women (Salvation Army). Many thanks to all who attended included our many supporters from other Clubs. We all had a wonderful time with thanks to the music provided by David Lakeman and Richard. It was a historical moment in Rotary history. (Photos with thanks to Grace Teng.) See more
