24.01.2022 Dick Whitaker: The forecast for D-Day The Forecast for D-Day, is the story behind the decision to choose 6th June 1944 as the day for the invasion of occupied Europe. For military reasons, the requirements for the Allied forces included specific moon phases and tides. These variables could be predicted accurately months in advance using astronomical and tide tables. But the other requirement the weather was a much more difficult proposition. The Forecast for D-Day exa...mines how the Allies’ meteorological team went about this very difficult forecast, in the days before satellite images and weather radars had become available. It was also a time of a vastly reduced network of weather observations, with very little meteorological information coming in from occupied Europe. James Stagg, the Chief Meteorologist, had the difficult task of reaching a consensus from three different forecasting teams that had very different methodologies and divergent beliefs in the predictability of the weather. The story of how they all came together and finally decided on the 6th June 1944 is one of the more fascinating back stories of the war. As the invasion forces prepared to depart ,General Morgan remarked to Stagg: "Good luck Stagg: may all your depressions be nice little ones: but remember, we'll string you up from the nearest lamp post if you don't read the omens aright." Dick Whitaker was a weather forecaster in the Bureau of Meteorology for 30 years, during which time he undertook several specialised roles. He has worked with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as a rapporteur for the Commission for Agricultural Meteorology, was a consultant in the AusAID funded Enhanced Applications of Climate Predictions in Pacific Island Countries (travelling extensively in the Pacific Islands) and began the Bureau of Meteorology’s Indigenous Weather Knowledge endeavour in 2001. He then spent ten years as Chief Meteorologist with Sky News Weather. Dick has been author, co-author and consultant editor of seventeen general interest books about the weather, including publications for Time-Life and Reader’s Digest. He has a long-standing interest in public education about weather and climate through community talks to Probus, Rotary, Lions, schools and U3A audiences. 21.01.2022 Rhys Williams: The value of international education to Australia International education is a great Australian success story and it has been created rather than dug out of the ground. However it is often misunderstood and criticised, making its value under-appreciated. Rhys Williams has been involved in international education for 25 years mainly at Victoria and RMIT universities. His principal work has been developing and managing transnational education projects involving t...he offering of Australian awards in other countries with foreign university partners. This work has taken Rhys to China, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Colombia and Brazil. Rhys has also managed Australian start-up campuses in Singapore and India. The transformational experience that this model provides for students is very valuable at individual, social and bilateral levels. 18.01.2022 John Bally: Predicting bushfires in the world’s second driest continent Australia has a long history of fire which has changed the face of the continent, brought many benefits and wreaked some havoc in more recent times. Systematic prediction of bushfires in Australia began with the work of Luke and McArthur in the 1950s and 60s at the CSIRO in Canberra, and the techniques they developed are still in use 60 years later. This is a testament to the quality of their work, but is...Continue reading

12.01.2022 [DG 21.20 Water and Sanitation- Kok Tnoth Village, Cambodia] The Rotary Club of Melbourne Central has made a difference for a community of families in Kok Tnoth Village who now have their own Clean Water Bore and their own Sanitary Toilet and wash room. The Cambodia Clean Water & Toilet Project led by director Darrel Steer have installed these facilities from the grant funds that the Rotary Club of Melbourne Central supported. So far they have completed 6 of the 12 toilets ...funded and 6 of the 12 water bores funded. These two collages of photos provide an overview of these twelve installations. The current Covid-19 pandemic has devastated many of these village families. Not directly because of the virus, but through the shutdown of the tourist industry. Many families relied on tourism for their employment. The continuing installation of clean water bores and septic tank toilets, is not only essential for health and hygiene, but also, directly and indirectly, provides work and income for ten families. #RotaryCentralMelbourne #ServiceAboveSelf #RotaryServingHumanity #District9800 #RotaryChangingLives #RotaryRocks #RotaryLife #RotaryConnected #RotaryDistrict9800 #RotaryServingTheCommunity #RotaryInternational #Causes #SocialGood #Volunteer #Volunteerism #Community #RotaryAwareness #WeAreRotary #ProudRotarian #myrotarymoment #endpolionow #RotaryConnectsTheWorld #rotaryinternational #rotary #rotaract #rid #rotaryclub #rotaractpower #rotaryconnectstheworld #rx #rotaractclub #peopleofaction #district #community #proudrotaractor

09.01.2022 Guest Speaker - Darren Park: Staying safe from scams, cybercrime and identity theft On a regular basis, we see media reports of malicious cyber activity across the world. Although companies and government agencies are often targeted due to the value of their data or resources, individuals may also be subjected to attack. Over the years, the methods employed by perpetrators have become more sophisticated and varied. The old-fashioned request for money to invest in a get rich ...quick scheme has been replaced by many other methods, such as: malicious software downloaded to a computer, hacking email accounts and phishing with bogus emails. This talk will be delivered by Darren Park, a forensic accountant, solicitor and forensic technology consultant. He has over 25 years’ experience in the prevention, detection and investigation of fraud and other misconduct. During the talk, he will share a number of practical insights of the current and emerging dangers, and he will provide practical steps on how to guard against them. Darren is a current member of Rotary Central Melbourne and has been the Club Auditor for many years. 03.01.2022 Christopher Lamb: Myanmar Today Christopher Lamb will provide a brief review of the current situation in Myanmar, following the military takeover on 1 February this year and the imprisonment of the democratically elected leadership, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The Australian economic adviser to the democratic government, Prof Sean Turnell of Macquarie University, was arrested at the same time and the Australian Government’s attempts to secure his release have so far been ...unsuccessful. Chris will follow the review with some points about the country’s future and the role which Australia might play. 02.01.2022 Warwick Cavell: Profitable Conversations Very little gets done in organisations and teams without a conversation of some kind. We invest considerable time in meetings and other forms of conversations. But how many of these conversations are 'profitable'? How many give us a positive return on investment, that is they move the organisation or team toward its goals and they strengthen relationships? Because conversations are so ubiquitous we tend to take them for granted. Howeve...r because they are so important to getting things done it is hard to think of a more important lever in improving organisational and team performance. In this presentation I will explore a simple but effective structure of a profitable conversation from my experience working with a variety of organisations, over many years.
