15.01.2022 Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end po...lio forever. Every Rotarian can and does participate in these whether through small local projects through to joining as a team member of a polio National Immunization Day in a polio endemic country. Every contribution is valued. To know that you can be part of something of global significance, something much bigger than yourself is immensely satisfying and empowering. Here are some of the dozens of Rotarians who rode trains or buses in NZs main centres to promote the Polio Eradication cause to the public. Experience this excitement by joining with us. #rotary4u | Contact is via www.rotaryoceania.zone | Freephone (NZ) 0800 476 8279

15.01.2022 Meet The Compassion Crew: With schools all but closed in an attempt to flatten the #COVID19 curve, the Hills International College Interact Club, Rotary Distric...t 9640, saw an opportunity to assist in caring for the younger children of essential workers who cant be home to provide homeschooling. The Hills International College students set about devising an initiative called The Compassion Crew, aimed at spreading compassion, not panic. The Compassion Crew was founded in March during a Year 12 social and community class, with discussions centred around what we could do to help out within the school and wider community during the COVID-19 crisis, Hills College Interact President Maya Parer said. We came up with the idea of The Compassion Crew, whose mission is to help out where we can and perform small, random acts of kindness. This has taken shape in many ways, Maya said. During the second last week of term, as students were having their temperatures taken by staff, we went around and gave every student a Mentos and a smile. That same week, we made up little gift bags of Easter eggs and lollies and handed them to every member of staff. Our biggest task was undertaken during the last week of term, when students had student free days. Some of the children of essential workers (mostly from Prep to Year 6) still needed to come to school so we had four to five members of The Compassion Crew coming in everyday to help support these students. We helped them complete schoolwork, played games, and in the afternoon watched a movie and relaxed with them. With the support of teachers, we were able to run and support these activities while being mindful of social distancing. As the Seniors head into Term 2 and full online learning, they continue to call into the school one day a week to balance school commitments and their commitment to The Compassion Crew. We are still committed to helping out and will be baking and sending in treats for our dorm students who are still on campus, Maya said. We will also be sending support by way of electronic postcards to all students studying from home. This has not been the senior year we thought it would be, but we are so proud of what The Compassion Crew has already accomplished, and we arent finished yet. We look forward to continuing our random acts of kindness and hope The Compassion Crew will continue for many years to come. It would be a real accomplishment to think that The Compassion Crew becomes the legacy of the class of 2020. 09.01.2022 Most people have heard of Rotary Youth Exchange, the world’s biggest and best-known student cultural exchange program. But not everyone would know that it came ...about thanks to Australian Rotarians. Since it was conceived, Rotary Youth Exchange, or as it was once known, Rotary Student Exchange, has become one of Rotary’s most respected and valuable programs. The current Rotary Youth Exchange program had its genesis in an exchange between Australian Rotary clubs and clubs in Nebraska, US, back in 1959. The program’s ongoing success over the following years led to its official adoption worldwide in 1972. It started at an international assembly of Rotary governors, held at Lake Placid in the US in 1958. Harley Shaver, a past governor from Nebraska, asked many of those present to go home and consider a new idea of student exchange. This proposed exchange would enable students to spend a year in a different country, in a different culture, while going to school. Joe Bradbury, an incoming governor from District 280, Australia, accepted the challenge of an exchange between his district and the district in Nebraska, currently Rotary International District 5450. Joe asked two enthusiastic Rotarians, Peter Barnett, of Myrtleford Rotary and Clive Schliebs, of the Rotary Club of Wangaratta (@rotarywangaratta.org.au), now Rotary District 9790 (@rotary9790), to both develop the program’s rules and promote participation. The very first exchange was eventually held between District 280 and the district in Nebraska when, in January 1959, John Rogers, a 15-year-old student from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, arrived in Myrtleford. At the same time, two Australian students, Nick Rutherford and Norm Jordon, left District 280 for Scottsbluff and Grand Lake, Colorado. It was these first three Rotary Youth Exchange students who started what has now become an opportunity of a lifetime for so many others. Today, between 8000 and 9000 exchanges are arranged each year affording students from around 80 countries of the Rotary world the opportunity of a lifetime. 08.01.2022 Did you know that more than 15 million people have been made homeless by disaster and conflict in 2020 alone? The UN puts the total global figure at an incredib...le 104 million. Disaster relief charity and Rotary International project partner ShelterBox is doing something to change this. December 10 was World Human Rights Day, and ShelterBox Australia used the day of recognition to promote shelter as a basic human right. As well as an extensive nationwide media campaign, the charity held its inaugural Giving Day, calling on everyday Australians to stand united with those left homeless by disaster and conflict. For many, the COVID-19 pandemic is a disaster on top of disaster. Disaster affected communities and people living in overcrowded camps are left especially vulnerable, with little to no space for self-isolating and social distancing. In these testing times, our shelter options of tents, tarpaulins or shelter kits can provide a safe place for a family to isolate, and aid items like water filters, solar lights and mosquito nets prove invaluable. Now, more than ever, shelter saves lives, ShelterBox Australia CEO and Response Team member Mike Greenslade said. ShelterBox is currently responding in the Philippines, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria and Syria. To find out more about the work of ShelterBox and celebrate shelter as a basic human right, visit www.shelterboxaustralia.org.au/givingday
