24.01.2022 Beirut called, and Rotary District 9705 responded. In an initiative led by the Rotary Club of Canberra, our District has instigated a project to support the Rot...ary Club de Beyrouth in Lebanon after Beirut was severely impacted by the massive explosion, which occurred on Beirut's port on 4 August 2020. The explosion caused extensive damage to much of Beirut, killing at least 220 people and injuring 6000 others. 110 people are reportedly missing. Up to 300,000 people have lost their homes. It was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history. Many buildings were destroyed or damaged, including the Karantina Government Hospital. The pediatric unit of the hospital was destroyed. The Rotary Club de Beyrouth in Lebanon is focusing its efforts on supporting the rebuilding of the pediatric unit of the hospital. Our District welcomes a prompt and generous donation of $5000 by the ACT Government to the Rotary Club of Canberra, which along with other fundraising monies will be forwarded to the Rotary Club de Beyrouth to support the rebuilding of the hospital's pediatric unit. For further information and how to donate to this project, please refer to the media release. #Beirut #BeirutExplosion #Lebanon #Rotary #PeopleofAction

Those are just initial responses. More will be provided as local needs are assessed by local Rotary Clubs. 20.01.2022 The Rotary Club of Canberra had given $250,000 US to the Rotary Foundation over many decades. This has been used all over the world to attack poverty in all its forms, to provide education, sanitation, midwifery services, child health, women’s empowerment and to defeat Polio which used to be a scourge as terrible as any disease in human history. Led by Rotary we now have wild Polio cornered and very nearly defeated in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Rotary and WHO and the Gates Foundation won’t give up until like Smallpox it is history. Next disease to eradicate is Malaria.
