23.01.2022 Most people have heard of Rotary Youth Exchange, the world’s biggest and best-known student cultural exchange program. But not everyone would know that it came ...about thanks to Australian Rotarians. Since it was conceived, Rotary Youth Exchange, or as it was once known, Rotary Student Exchange, has become one of Rotary’s most respected and valuable programs. The current Rotary Youth Exchange program had its genesis in an exchange between Australian Rotary clubs and clubs in Nebraska, US, back in 1959. The program’s ongoing success over the following years led to its official adoption worldwide in 1972. It started at an international assembly of Rotary governors, held at Lake Placid in the US in 1958. Harley Shaver, a past governor from Nebraska, asked many of those present to go home and consider a new idea of student exchange. This proposed exchange would enable students to spend a year in a different country, in a different culture, while going to school. Joe Bradbury, an incoming governor from District 280, Australia, accepted the challenge of an exchange between his district and the district in Nebraska, currently Rotary International District 5450. Joe asked two enthusiastic Rotarians, Peter Barnett, of Myrtleford Rotary and Clive Schliebs, of the Rotary Club of Wangaratta (@rotarywangaratta.org.au), now Rotary District 9790 (@rotary9790), to both develop the program’s rules and promote participation. The very first exchange was eventually held between District 280 and the district in Nebraska when, in January 1959, John Rogers, a 15-year-old student from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, arrived in Myrtleford. At the same time, two Australian students, Nick Rutherford and Norm Jordon, left District 280 for Scottsbluff and Grand Lake, Colorado. It was these first three Rotary Youth Exchange students who started what has now become an opportunity of a lifetime for so many others. Today, between 8000 and 9000 exchanges are arranged each year affording students from around 80 countries of the Rotary world the opportunity of a lifetime. 23.01.2022 ICYMI! Recently our 2020 outbounder Jorja Bellis took over our Instagram account to share some of her experiences as an Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Osceo...la, Wisconsin, USA! Here are some highlights from Jorja's takeover: - how the strength of the bonds she has made with her two host families, and the support of her family at home, have helped her navigate the ups and downs of life on exchange during a pandemic. - the trips Jorja has managed to make despite the covid restrictions and Rotary trip cancellations, including a girls trip with some of her closest friends, spending a month in North Carolina, and going to Massachusetts to experience the infamous Salem Witch Museum! - getting thrown a surprise party for her 16th birthday. - experiencing her first Halloween party, thanksgiving, and American football games. - putting up a giant Christmas tree with her host family that needed a ladder to reach the top. - going snow tubing and walking on ice! (definitely not normal every day activities for a girl from the Gold Coast!). Jorja was only 15 when she headed off on her year-long exchange. Like all 2020 exchange students, she has faced many unexpected challenges being on the other side of the world during a pandemic, and we are just so proud of the positive attitude she has maintained, and the maturity she has shown in dealing with everything thrown her way. Welcome to the YEP family Jorja, and see you soon! Thank you to Jorja's sponsor club Rotary Club of Banora - Tweed, her host club the Rotary Club of St. Croix Falls WI - Taylor Falls MN, Rotary District 9640 and Rotary Youth Exchange Australia.

22.01.2022 Updated my photo to reflect that September 15th marked the 67th year of when I was struck down by polio in 1953....at age 10 months old....only 6 months before ...the Salk Vaccine was widely tested. I'm Blessed to have been born in the US with good medical care and the loving care of my Mom who did Sister Kenny's physical therapy on me. I'm Blessed to be in Rotary International who is working hard to eradicate wild polio worldwide. #EndPolioNow #ThisClose See more

22.01.2022 ICYMI Last week over on our Instagram, our 2020 outbounder Lily Taylor took us on a culinary, scenic, sporting, family, school and Rotary tour of her host cou...ntry Denmark! Lily shared many amazing insights with us of her experience being a Rotary Exchange Student in Denmark, but some of the highlights were: - visiting the Eiffel Tower - albeit a mini version at Lego Land after the Euro tour was cancelled due to covid - Enjoying the Danish birthday tradition of Kagemand, a birthday cake shaped like a person - Experiencing the changing of the leaves during the Danish autumn....something we miss out on here in Queensland. - animal spotting from her third host families home in Hjerm and seeing deer, fox and hares. But no wolf sightings....yet! - learning about a typical school day for Lily, and the fact that she is taking both latin and spanish classes....in danish! - hearing about the totally different experiences she's had living with her three very different host families Lily, we loved meeting your host families and school friends, learning about danish sporting obsessions, and getting a sneak peek at the places you've travelled despite covid (both mini and the real thing). We are so proud to see you wear the Rotary blazer with pride, and be a wonderful ambassador for Australia and Rotary District 9640. Thank you to Lily's sponsor clubs Rotary Club of Coomera Valley and Rotary Club of Coomera River for giving Lily this amazing opportunity, and thanks to Rotary District 9640 and Rotary Youth Exchange Australia. Next up with have our outbounder Kyah Anderson taking over from Minneapolis from 21 28 November over American thanksgiving! Make sure you're following us on Instagram to follow along, otherwise we'll do a wrap up post here on Facebook at the end of the week. https://www.instagram.com/rotaryyep9640/ #rotaryyouthexchange #RotaryConnectsTheWorld #rotaryyouthexchangeaustralia

21.01.2022 It wasn’t an easy start to life for young Mori woman Kriddles Roberts. Born into gang life, she experienced homelessness as a teenager on the streets of Sydney.... However, by the time she was appointed the youngest ever president of Waitakere Rotary (@www.rotarywaitakere.org.nz), Rotary District 9910, in July, Kriddles already had an established reach within the local community through her own charity, Unity In Our Community. Drawing on her passion for helping those in need, Kriddles is bringing together the two community-focused organisations for the benefit of the local people. As well as helping dozens of families in need with regular deliveries of food packs and clothing, UIOC holds free community events each year that showcase local artists, provide community services and education, and necessities to help those in need. 18.01.2022 This week we are super excited to have our 2020 outbounder Kyah Anderson taking over our Instagram account from Minneapolis, USA! Not just because it’s than...ksgiving, which means we’ll hopefully get some good turkey shots, but because Kyah has been thrown so many curve balls during her exchange year and we think it’s pretty amazing how she’s dealt with it all. Kyah is sponsored by Rotary Club of Currumbin Coolangatta Tweed Inc. You can follow along at @rotaryyep9640 or if you’re not on Instagram stay tuned for a round up at the end of the week! 13.01.2022 Who’s Doing All This Good? Last year there were almost 6 million Aussies who donated their time in volunteering. That equates to 1 legend out of every 5 citizens. Additionally, 22% of these volunteers were aged under 30! There’s certainly something to be said for young whippersnappers.

11.01.2022 Rotary clubs in Australia and New Zealand have contributed to the largest-ever Rotary Foundation Grant to fund vital healthcare equipment on the world’s largest... purpose-built NGO hospital ship, operated by Mercy Ships. The ‘Global Mercy’ launches in 2021 and will double the NGO’s healthcare impact throughout West Africa by providing six surgical specialities, as well as training for local healthcare workers. Money donated by Craig Brodey, of Lane Cove Rotary, Rotary District 9685, together with contributions from New Zealand’s Rotary Club of Morrinsville - District 9930 Inc, Rotary District 9930 Central North Island New Zealand, forms part of the 2020 Rotary Foundation global grant of US$1.125 million, helping outfit six operating theatres, three infection isolation rooms, six wards, and an intensive care unit on board the Global Mercy. Worldwide, two out of three people could not access surgery when they need it pre-COVID-19. More than 18 million people were dying unnecessarily from conditions that could have been treated by surgery because they could not afford it, could not access it, or it was simply not available in their country at any time. In 2020 this need has escalated. During the 50-year lifespan of the ‘Global Mercy’, it is estimated more than 150,000 people will be transformed through free essential surgery. The addition of the new hospital ship will enable Mercy Ships to reach more people in need and train more local healthcare professionals, while leaving a sustainable, lasting healthcare legacy. 09.01.2022 Great information on Polio eradication

09.01.2022 Rotarian Garry Begley gave a talk last night on Rotary International 's fight against Polio. Rotary along with the organisations listed below have brought this terrible disease to a point where we can eradicate the disease. But we shouldnt let up yet Since 1988, we've seen a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9%. For more than three years, we've seen wild polio cases in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.... For more info head to https://www.endpolio.org/

Recently Lily joined a group of Ro...tary exchange students for 10 days of mountain biking through different parts of Denmark. She says: "It was great to go out and explore Denmark's nature from a different perspective. I had lots of fun seeing the other exchange students again, and also was lucky enough to be able to go up to Skagen, the tip of Denmark."
