25.01.2022 Coffee morning for Rotarians. Some industrious, some pensive and some just relaxing. Good to be able to catch up

23.01.2022 It's a while since we had anything to post. Today we had a small gathering at Leeton Fresco for a coffee. Nice to see Neil for the first time.e in 6 months. Thanks to Dan for my new sheep called Danny. Let's hope we stay COVID safe for a lot longer. Our thoughts go out to other communities that are doing it real tough!!! We are scratching our heads how we can be effective as Rotarians but maybe some moral support to each other is just as important!!!... KEEP SAFE See more

19.01.2022 Guest Speakers - FFFRR & IRCF Last week the Club was treated to two guests as what they were talking about were related. Claire Williams from the FRRR (Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal) and Katherine Herrmann were our guests. The way the Q&A’s went after the presentations meant that having both there was very complementary. Claire spoke about the IRCF (Investing in Rural Community Futures) grants that Not For Profits (NFPs) are putting in applications for (that's t...Continue reading

18.01.2022 The annual Rotary Christmas Ham Raffle will be held at the Farmer's Market this year, due to the cancellation of Light Up Leeton. We hope to see you there on Saturday the 5th of December!

15.01.2022 Peter Hermann says let's go you MUST see our Walnuts at Duxton Nuts on Yanco Valley Farm. Katherine says follow him and Peter presents the farm from Roachs Regulator. Meanwhile Peter Draper drools over the 60 megalitre a day inlet that supplies the farm. This was our first vocational visit for 2020 and certainly very successful. Thanks Peter and Katherine Hermann. Scott and Danny for being informative hosts.

06.01.2022 The World Health Organization (WHO) on 25 August announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region. This is a historic and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary’s top priority. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Rotary Club of Leeton's fundraising efforts. While most of our disbursements are directed to local causes, a significant amount has been given to the End Polio pr...ogram over many years. This is your victory as well! 05.01.2022 Roller Coaster Ride that is how Laurie Lewin described Rice Research Funding as part of his presentation to his fellow Rotarians at last week’s dinner meeting. Geez Laurie stand still, how am I supposed to get a decent photo.... Rice is a very important employer in Leeton and Deniliquin and has underpinned the economies in the Murrumbidgee and Murray. Every job in the rice industry supports 6 others in the community. Rice, wine, oranges and walnuts are value adding employers in this community and rice needs to compete for water. Competition for water includes the environment (water reform), nuts particularly almonds, cotton, corn, soybeans and other horticulture commodities. Laurie provided a brief outline why research is needed and how hard this can be with the fluctuations in yield and production for rice crops over the years (example given for 1925 -2019). As part of rice research funding growers pay a levy per tonne (was $3 now $6) which is paid to AgriFutures. This amount is matched to some extent by the Commonwealth depending on value or research spending. The amount per year varies wildly with current research costs about $3 million per year. Commonwealth contribution - an audit review of the Dept of Agriculture found they were underpaying AgriFutures by a large amount. Rice research has been underfunded for years. This has resulted in a windfall payment of over $11 million and has more than doubled the Commonwealth contribution each year. We must use this windfall to make real change via innovation challenge, scoping study and improved efficiency. Decision making will commence on 4 November 2020, with new projects to commence by 1 July 2021. Aspiration is to make real change within 5 years. Laurie’s presentation provided significant information to something that is extremely important not only to Rotarians but to our community.
