17.01.2022 Rotary History Bite #19/100: Jock Reids legacy will carry through for another century It is significant to be a Rotarian and there have been many significant R...otarians. Sir John T (Jock) Reid is one whose legacy lives on helping us make a difference in places that matter. Sir Johns philanthropy had as its basis that support from his Charitable Trusts allowed good people to get on with their own good work for the benefit of the community. This spirit of giving, combined with his wide networks, enquiring mind and support for humanitarian and social justice causes, ensured that funds went to a broad range of organisations well placed to have a positive impact on the Australian community. He gave his time willingly to several organisations committed to the welfare of the community, including the Rotary Club of Melbourne as a president, long term member and host to Paul Harris. The John T Reid Charitable Trusts, created by the late Sir John Reid (1903 1984), is a family foundation. For over sixty years, three generations of family members have proudly continued his generous legacy. Proud of Australia and committed to its future, he promoted the development of Australian intellectual and artistic life through his support of institutions such as the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and the Victorian College of the Arts. Every year, Rotary Melbourne pays tribute to dedicated quiet achievers and encourage others to follow their lead through the Sir John Reid Community Service Award. This award is a permanent memorial to Sir John Reid, who served the RCM for over 45 years, being its President in 1953-54. Since its inception in 1987, the Award has been given each year to honour an individual in the Victorian community whose volunteer service is judged to be worthy of special notice. Plus a grant of $10,000 is awarded to the charity associated with the recipient of the Award. The legacy lives on!

16.01.2022 "When I was 10 months old, I was paralyzed from the neck down by polio. I had been in the hospital for about a week when my great-aunt came to visit. She was a ...nun and had spent most of her adult life working as a nurse in a polio ward. She looked at my chart and saw that the doctors werent doing what they needed to do to prevent my muscles from atrophying. My great-aunt believed in a method developed by an Australian nurse named Sister Kenny. It was a physical therapy program for polio patients that manipulated and stretched the paralyzed muscles. A year later, I took my first step." - Rotary member John Nanni Read more about his experiences with polio. https://on.rotary.org/2NxxynP

14.01.2022 STUDENTS ADAPT DURING THE PANDEMIC Rotary Junior Community Award students at Elizabeth Street Primary School gave ZOOM presentations to the Rotary Club of Moe last week. Traditionally the school would give these at the ‘Rostrum’ at a regular club meeting, but in these COVID-safe times the kids stepped up to microphone and zoomed. ... Glowing reports came in of activities in wood working, cooking, gardening and brekky club. Vocational and Youth chair Robin Noakes said despite the adversity, the kids had really put a lot of effort in. He was pleased to see that the long tradition of Elizabeth St students participating in the Award program had been upheld and all the Rotarians who joined in the Zoom presentation were very impressed. The students, staff and parents should be proud of their achievements.

14.01.2022 It has now been six weeks since our club has met face to face due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. We have been keeping in touch via Skype for our weekly meetings and also through a phone buddy system. We are all missing the face to face contact with our friends and no more so than Secretary Di Harrison. Di has spent the past two days door knocking every Moe Rotarian to deliver a beautiful yellow rose to let us know that we are missed. Thank you Di. Your kind gesture is very much appreciated from all members of the Rotary Club of Moe

14.01.2022 TODAY IS WORLD POLIO DAY Want to be part of a global health legacy? Join with Rotary on World Polio Day 24/10 in the fight to #EndPolio. ... Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a paralysing and potentially fatal disease that invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. While polio cannot be cured, it can be prevented by a vaccine. Rotary and our partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. "Because of these efforts, there are now only two countries continuing to report wild polio cases," Rotary Club of Moe International and Foundation chair Dianne Wilkinson said. "The Rotary Club of Moe is proud to be part of this global campaign to End Polio Now." Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year for polio eradication. Thanks to a 2-to-1 match from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, every donation made to Rotary to #EndPolioNow will be tripled. No child should suffer from this vaccine-preventable disease. A polio-fee world will save lives and give children a chance at a healthy future.

04.01.2022 PURPLE CROCUS PROJECT The Rotary Club of Moe undertook a project in February 2020 to sell bags of purple crocus bulbs to support End Polio Now, an important global initiative to eradicate polio. The club sold 500 bulbs to Rotarians and their friends and families, which enabled it to make a $200donation to the End Polio Now campaign. ... The purple bulbs represent the purple dye used to mark the little finger of children who have been vaccinated in endemic countries. The polio eradication program has seen millions of children across the world vaccinated against this crippling and deadly disease. It was wonderful to receive the news recently that the World Health Organisation (WHO) African region has been declared officially certified free of wild poliovirus. 02.01.2022 A philanthropic donor, who wishes to remain anonymous has given $1million to Rotary. The funds are specifically targeted to support those farmers in areas of se...vere drought by purchasing hay for their core breeding stocks. The NSW Government has also come to the party by providing $492,500 worth of funding for transport costs. This means that all of the donated money can be used for the purchase of hay. The first of these deliveries has started to roll out with the photo showing a delivery to "Stirling" which is in the Little Plain area of NSW. A full copy of the official press release is detailed below. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd 18th December 2019 Sydney, Australia Anonymous Donor Gives $1million to Aussie farmers A generous philanthropic donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has given $1million to Rotary to benefit Aussie cattle producers doing it tough in the drought and struggling to maintain their core breeding herds. The donor wants Rotary to provide real assistance to genuine primary producers and so the project has been designed to deliver a B-Double truck load of hay to each selected recipient. This is sufficient fodder to maintain a 100 cow herd for one month. One month closer to rain!! The extensive zone of declared intense drought and lowest ever recorded rainfall, lying over the Northern Tablelands, NW slopes and Darling downs, has been selected for the project. Rotary Clubs within this zone have been asked to tap into the local knowledge of their Clubs Members to identify those cattle producers who are in the most need and who without this assistance will be forced to dispose of the last of their breeding herds. It is anticipated that this donation could stretch to between 100 and 120 recipients in total. Whilst Rotary acknowledges that the donation cannot stretch to all those in need it will, at least, give material assistance to the selected farmers. The NSW Government through the NSW Rural Assistance Authority has generously agreed to provide up to $492,500 (ex GST) in funding for the transportation of hay to NSW farmers. The donation by the NSW Rural Assistance Authority means that Rotary can now use the full $1million donation received for the purchase of hay. Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd (RAWCS) is managing the funds and the purchase and distribution of hay. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

The disease invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. ... It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. However, unlike most diseases, polio an be eradicated.
