25.01.2022 DG Ros Kellys Dynamic Presentation By Bruce Hunter Breaking new ground in a District Governors address to our club, Ros Kellys dynamic presentation gave practical examples of how to apply this years theme, Rotary Connects the World -- not theories, actual working plans for Rotary to become involved in parts of the community we have not considered before. Supported by video, Ros used Rota-Kids, a Primary School project in th...e UK illustrating how to interest the community in Rotarys activities. In Rota-Kids, school children visit a Rotary meeting, and in return the Rotarians visit the school. The principle does not necessarily have to be a school. It could be a church group, a sporting club, or as Ros daughter demonstrated, it could be a Mums Group, bringing mothers together in friendship. Friends of Rotary is an example of how to broadcast Rotarys message to the community without the usual sales message. Ros said that Rotary does a superb job organising and undertaking projects, but fails dismally promoting itself. The principle behind Rota-Kids is another example of interesting the community in Rotary. The second part of Ross presentation was the timely issue of drought. Ros is deeply involved in our Districts Drought Appeal, together with Channel 9, and Carlton United Breweries. 98 percent of our District is experiencing drought conditions. Suicide rate is double the national average. Lockyer Valley is really in a bad way. Care is taken to ensure funds raised to help are given to those in need and Rotary Clubs help distribute funds in towns. There are ten Health and Well- Being days to be held before Christmas. These have been very successful. Rotary provides books for children whose family cant afford them. Rotary does not get involved with Counselling. Rural Counselling Service does this work. See more

10.01.2022 Global polio cases have been cut by more than 99 per cent since 1988 but the type 1 polio virus is still endemic in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where it has infected 102 people this year. That is a resurgence from a record low global annual figure of 22 cases in 2017. Polio invades the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis within hours. It cannot be cured, but it can be prevented by vaccination, and a dramatic reduction in cases worldwide in recent decades has bee...n due to intense national and regional immunisation campaigns for babies and children. The $US2.6 billion pledge will part fund the initiatives 2019-2023 "endgame strategy". A total of $US3.27 billion is needed to fully implement the plan, the WHO said. Donors made their pledges at a "Reaching the Last Mile" polio conference in Abu Dhabi. The funding includes $US1.08 billion from the Gates Foundation, around $US514 million from Britain, $US215 million from the United States, $US160 million from Pakistan and $US150 million from the charity Rotary International.
