24.01.2022 Guest Speaker: Ms Bron Williams: 6th April 2021 Title: Unconscious Bias: Finding Your Bias Baseline Working with asylum seekers on the Pacific island of Nauru shook Bron Williams then a Salvation Army Minister to the core. With an inherent belief she did not carry personal bias, the alternately confronting and rich experiences created an incredible level of awareness of the significant impact individual and corporate stories have on how we perceive the world. ... Realising her own unconscious bias, which lay latent through growing up in a largely white Australia, Bron fused the insights from Nauru with her diverse career in education and not-for-profit to build an innate capacity to see beneath the surface to the behaviours we see, accept and often rally against every day. Bron is determined to make bias conscious in the corporate environment, to build awareness that we are a result of our environment, and better served making those biases conscious, and developing targeted strategies to drive successful growth and change. 20.01.2022 Jeff Shaw and Christina Karvonidis: Give a Care - Your Life. Your Choice. One morning in August 2007, 38-year-old Jeff Shaw woke up feeling sick and called an ambulance. Jeff had had a major stroke, which blew up his cerebellum a small region in the lower part of the brain that plays an important role in fine motor controls. Leaving Jeff with an acquired brain injury. For over four years, Jeff became increasingly frustrated by disability service providers who wouldn’t list...en to what he wanted and instead just offered what they thought he needed. In 2013, 2 months before the NDIS was announced, Jeff founded social enterprise, Give a Care, to enable him to have real choice and control over the support that he required. In 2014, work commenced on developing a business model which concentrated on allowing others with disability to have the same support and choice as Jeff insisted on and in 2017, Give a Care opened its doors to the Beaumaris and surrounding community. Today, Give a Care is one of the fastest-growing disability support services in Victoria and the only known support service founded and run by a person with a disability. Jeff continues to steer the direction of Give a Care and in late 2019 he launched The Give a Care Foundation to combat social isolation for people living with disability. Rotary Central Melbourne has nominated Jeff Shaw for the multi-District Shine On Awards for the work he is doing within the disabled community. Give a Care General Manager, Cristina Karvonidis has degrees in marketing and business and a post-graduate degree in business administration. Cristina’s extensive experience in Australia, United States, UK and Brazil brings broad knowledge and focus to help Jeff manage Give a Care. Cristina speaks 5 languages and has over 25 years’ experience working in small to large corporations in a variety of industries and most recently in the Aged Care and Disability sectors. Cristina is passionate about supporting people in the community. At Give a Care, Cristina’s job is to assist Jeff in building a sustainable company and empowering people with disabilities to live healthier and happier lives. 19.01.2022 Maria Pellicano: The voice is the organ of your soul - how a singing teacher empowers human potential ? Using a blend of voice technique and control with human behaviour strategies and awareness, aligning both voice and emotions, I enable a powerful performance that changes audiences and is memorable. Whether you are singing or speaking the human voice is the organ of the soul and it is there to reach out to people helping them feel the words, to be changed by the passion in ...the voice. Over the past 40 years of being a singer and a teacher, having both ups and downs with my own voice, from voice fatigue and strain to complete freedom and access to my full vocal range, I believe I have found a way to help anyone’s voice sound amazing. I am the author of a book called The Art of Powerful Communication. My passion for voice has led me into coaching and mentoring business leaders, teams, and private clients to communicate with authenticity and power. I believe you can be a powerful communicator when you align your mindset, message and voice with awareness, technique and skill. A number of my articles have been featured in the International Coaching Guild magazine, women’s magazines and on LinkedIn. 16.01.2022 Marwien Ariik: From Lou Ariik Village, South Sudan to Melbourne, Australia Ariik’s story so far. An interview with Brett Jones. Marwien Ariik (known as Ariik) was born in 1989 in the village of Lou Ariik, South Sudan. At the age of 8, Ariik learned that his father (Ariik Dut) had died in the South Sudan war along with millions of others while fighting for the freedom of his people. This sad loss sank deep into Ariik’s mind and he found himself asking what he could do to con...tinue to help the people who were freed through his father’s efforts and to ensure they were not in vain. Ariik was raised by his mother Abuk Tong with his other siblings (1 brother and 3 sisters). When war broke out, young males were a target so Ariik spent most of his time with his father during that time. When his father died, Ariik was looked after by his father’s friends, who took him to Uganda resulting in his being separated from his mother. He ended up in a refugee camp there and later transferred to Kenya where he lived for six years. In 2005 Ariik he made his way to Melbourne, Australia under an Australian Government Humanitarian visa. Ariik is currently a Business Banker with CBA at Highpoint. In 2019, Ariik became a member of Rotary Central Melbourne and he will share with us how his journey has shaped plans to assist the people of Lou Ariik This promises to be an interesting and entertaining program. 12.01.2022 Dick Whitaker: The forecast for D-Day The Forecast for D-Day, is the story behind the decision to choose 6th June 1944 as the day for the invasion of occupied Europe. For military reasons, the requirements for the Allied forces included specific moon phases and tides. These variables could be predicted accurately months in advance using astronomical and tide tables. But the other requirement the weather was a much more difficult proposition. The Forecast for D-Day exa...mines how the Allies’ meteorological team went about this very difficult forecast, in the days before satellite images and weather radars had become available. It was also a time of a vastly reduced network of weather observations, with very little meteorological information coming in from occupied Europe. James Stagg, the Chief Meteorologist, had the difficult task of reaching a consensus from three different forecasting teams that had very different methodologies and divergent beliefs in the predictability of the weather. The story of how they all came together and finally decided on the 6th June 1944 is one of the more fascinating back stories of the war. As the invasion forces prepared to depart ,General Morgan remarked to Stagg: "Good luck Stagg: may all your depressions be nice little ones: but remember, we'll string you up from the nearest lamp post if you don't read the omens aright." Dick Whitaker was a weather forecaster in the Bureau of Meteorology for 30 years, during which time he undertook several specialised roles. He has worked with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as a rapporteur for the Commission for Agricultural Meteorology, was a consultant in the AusAID funded Enhanced Applications of Climate Predictions in Pacific Island Countries (travelling extensively in the Pacific Islands) and began the Bureau of Meteorology’s Indigenous Weather Knowledge endeavour in 2001. He then spent ten years as Chief Meteorologist with Sky News Weather. Dick has been author, co-author and consultant editor of seventeen general interest books about the weather, including publications for Time-Life and Reader’s Digest. He has a long-standing interest in public education about weather and climate through community talks to Probus, Rotary, Lions, schools and U3A audiences.
