11.01.2022 24 October 2017 is WORLD POLIO DAY Polio Plus Birthday of 32 years Here in Australia there are 2857 who are registered survivors of Polio & this year marks 32 years since Rotary launched PolioPlus, its campaign to rid the world of Polio. Rotary’s Polio Plus campaign has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide. ... 32 years ago Sir Clem Renouf of Nambour on our Sunshine Coast became the International President of Rotary, and initiated the campaign to rid the world of Polio. Since 1985 Rotary and its partners have helped reduce the number of cases from 350,000 annually to fewer than 400 in 2014 and now in 2017 down to 10, and they remain committed until the disease is eradicated from the world totally. Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2 billion children worldwide. In addition, Rotary's advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over $10 billion to the effort, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support the cause too. That catastrophic figure of 350,000 is now down to 3 countries : Afghanistan 6 cases. Pakistan 4 cases and Nigeria now 0. Join in this year’s celebrations with any of your local Rotary Clubs in your area. Call 1300 791 226 to make a donation or for more information.
