25.01.2022 Did you know that 32% of Greece is forested? When wildfires raged in 2018, they left a charred landscape on the coast east of Athens. One year later, the Ro...taract Club of Athina-Filothei teamed with local government units and ecological NGOs to plant trees in one of the hardest-hit areas. #peopleofaction See more

25.01.2022 From all of us here at Windsor Police Station, we want to say a sincere "Thank You!" to everyone who contributed to our annual Play Doh drive to support the chi...ldren at Westmead Childrens Hospital. Your gift to the children has been delivered with the staff at the Childrens Hospital so very grateful for the generosity and community spirit. We heard so many stories about how much this gift means to the children and staff - which we will share with you on this page. 2020, despite all of the other challenges, was the best ever donation and would not have been possible without the wonderful people, organisations, schools and social groups who supported us. Thank you - those who donated made a positive contribution to people who really needed it.

24.01.2022 Today is World Sight Day and at Guide Dogs, we see firsthand the challenges that come from low vision or blindness. That's why we encourage you to keep up with ...your regular eye tests and seek advice if you notice a change in your vision. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it's estimated that 2.2 billion people worldwide have a vision condition and of those, at least 1 billion have a condition that could've been prevented or is yet to be addressed. Here's an example of what the world might look like if you had one of these vision conditions: Age-related Macular Degeneration, Cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa and Neurological Vision Impairment. If you experience low vision or blindness, how would you describe your vision? [Image description: A 3x2 image grid of a yellow Labrador in harness looking front on to the camera. Each image shows how the dog would appear if a person's vision is affected by each vision condition.]

15.01.2022 Dont get rolled by scammers looking for love. Dating and romance is arguably the most deceptive as the imposter usually forms a close bond with their victim,... playing their emotions and gaining their trust, before taking their money and leaving them heartbroken. 10.01.2022 Today we held a Thank You Civic Reception for Hawkesbury RFS as part of Emergency Preparedness Week. We wanted to thank all Hawkesbury RFS members, volunteers a...nd staff for everything they have done for the Hawkesbury over many years, and particularly what they did during one of the worst fire seasons ever seen in the Hawkesbury this year. The Mayor presented Hawkesbury RFS volunteers with Thank You Frames which were made from more than 3000 thank you cards from people who signed them at our events and Council facilities during January and February and from schools across the Hawkesbury. The messages in the frames were a touching reminder of how much we all appreciate everything the RFS does for our community and we hope they are hung in the fire stations to remind RFS members that what they do means so much to us. A second reception will also be held this evening and we will post some photos of our fabulous RFS members. #TYFYS #HawkesburyRFS #hawkesburylocals

09.01.2022 Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I....e. genetics. Seasonal flu is an all human virus. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways... through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot. Novel viruses, come from animals... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1, birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then its a problem,. Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity. The RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isnt human, and the human immune system doesnt recognize it so, we cant fight it off. Now... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years its only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human. Once that happens, we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly its going to be. H1N1 was deadly, but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. Its RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too. Fast forward. Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long. But one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in November 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person. But here is the scary part. In just TWO WEEKS, it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, slippery. This Coronavirus, not being in any form a human virus, (where we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity and doctors have no known medicines for it. And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way that it causes great damage to human lungs. Thats why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza. This one is slippery, And its a lung eater. And, its already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain S and strain L, which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine. We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. And let me end by saying right now, its hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery, if it mutates again (and it will), who is to say, what it will do next. Be smart folks. Quarantine! Social distance! Stay home folks. Share this to those that just are not catching on.

08.01.2022 This evening we held a Thank You Civic Reception for Hawkesbury RFS as part of Emergency Preparedness Week. Both of the events were held to replace the Hawkesbury Thank You Parade planned for March 2020 that was unable to held due to COVID public health order restrictions. 05.01.2022 At the Hawkesbury Police Area Command Police Officer Of The Year (Bryson Anderson Award), hosted by Windsor Rotary, Detective Superintendent Jim Stewart, (pictu...red below) discussed with those in attendance the challenges faced by local police over the past twelve months. Superintendent Stewart recalled the impact of the Gosper Mountain Fire and the impact on the Hawkesbury area, followed by floods which caused so much damage in the Colo region. This was soon followed by the response to a pandemic, in what have been unpreceneted times in terms of a policing response. Superintendent Stewart said with pride that police from this Command not only maintaned a response to the community, but have been deployed to Operations including hotel quarentine, airport security and more recently, to the border with Victoria as part of Operation Border Closure. During these incidents, Superintendent Stewart commented upon the professionalism and dedication of staff who basically turned up and said, "tell us what needs to be done." The Awards night, held under COVID-19 safe plans and arrangements, was a wonderful night to bring community members and police together to reflect on the provision of policing services to the Hawkesbury Region and to the State of New South Wales.
