30.04.2022 AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS 2022 - CITIZEN OF THE YEAR | WINNER - FIONA PATERSON The Citizen of the Year Award recognises a person who has contributed to the rich exp...erience of living in Central Coast, through their ongoing commitment and significant positive impact. Our 2022 winner has passionately and selflessly contributed to the performing arts for both youth and the wider Central Coast community for more than twenty years. Congratulations to the Australia Day 2022 Citizen of the Year Awardee: Fiona Paterson. Since Fiona commenced teaching at Ulverstone Secondary College in the early 2000s, she has driven an active and vibrant performing and visual arts culture within the school. Fiona dedicates hundreds of hours of her own time to provide outlets for youth to express themselves through performance, helping lead the school’s annual community concerts, and their large productions every two years. Fiona is also an integral member of the Ulverstone Repertory Society, for which she has been awarded life membership. Through the Rep, Fiona has directed a number of youth- and children- centred productions, which have allowed young people from all across the region to participate and grow in a professional and supportive theatre environment. Fiona is also a coordinator and stage manager for the Ulverstone Christmas Carols. She was instrumental in the successful move of the Carols to the Ulverstone Recreation Ground in 2020, to ensure they could take place amid the restrictions for COVID-19 safety. Fiona has greatly added to the social and cultural fabric of our community, providing entertainment and incredible support and opportunity for our youth.

25.04.2022 AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS 2022 - COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE YEAR| WINNER - NEW MORNINGS The Community Group of the Year celebrates an organisation or group which has pro...vided exceptional services, support, projects, or activities to the Central Coast community. The 2022 Community Group of the year is an Ulverstone-based charity which provides support to a broad range of people, and particularly to vulnerable people living with grief and mental illness. Congratulations to the Australia Day 2022 Community Group of the Year Awardee: New Mornings. New Mornings provides a not-for-profit mental health service to the most vulnerable members of our community on their recovery journey to emotional health and wellbeing. The organisation has a clinical support team of two doctors, a mental health practitioner, and professional staff, who are ably assisted by more than sixty volunteers. Together, the staff and volunteers help run a range of events and programs providing support, assistance and understanding, most with a focus on grieving and recovery. Services include a drop-in café, a 1-on-1 mentoring program for students in local schools, and a therapy garden for children to work through emotional trauma. The New Mornings Grief Support Program also helps participants, including education and mentoring to people who learned how to better support someone they know is grieving. The New Mornings group works quietly and without fanfare, and is an excellent recipient for the 2022 Community Group of the Year.

18.04.2022 AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS 2022 - COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR | WINNER - SPARKLE IN THE DARK BY ROTARY CLUB OF ULVERSTONE The Community Event of the Year celebrates a...n event held in Central Coast during the past year which has had a positive impact upon the community. The winner of this Award is an event which has been held successfully for a number of years, providing a spectacular evening of entertainment whilst raising funds for coastal charities. Congratulations to the Australia Day 2022 Community Event of the Year Awardee: Sparkle in the Dark, by Rotary Club of Ulverstone. In 2021, the Sparkle event helped celebrate the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, drawing community members from all walks of life to a special fundraising dinner. The volunteer organising committee worked tirelessly to deliver the event, and raised over $20,000 to go to two local charities - the Warrawee Women’s Shelter and the Central Coast Motor Neurone Disease committee. The event also helped promote and raise awareness of the very important causes served by those organisations the plight of women and children escaping domestic violence, and the impact of degenerative neurological disease on some local residents. As a result of the funding support from the Sparkle in 2021, the Warrawee Women’s Shelter has been able to make significant improvements to security and safety of the Shelter, helping secure the service for the future. Sparkle in the Dark has been an incredible event, and richly deserves the 2022 Community Event of the Year award.

04.04.2022 AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS 2022- YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR | WINNER - MURPHY KNOWLES The Young Citizen of the Year Award recognises a person under the age of the age... of 25 who has made a significant contribution to the Central Coast community, and is an exemplary role model for other young people. Our 2022 winner has shown maturity and leadership throughout their education, in volunteer community service, in work, and their efforts to support local charity. Congratulations to the Australia Day 2022 Young Citizen of the Year Awardee: Murphy Knowles. Murphy is an active and exceptional member of the Ulverstone Surf Life Saving Club, helping teach other young members through their SRC and Bronze Medallion training. He was the 2021 Youth Surf Life Saver of the Year for Tasmania, and although he is still only 18 years old, for the past two years Murphy has been part of the leadership team delivering the statewide Tasmanian Surf Life Saving Development Camp in January. Murphy attended Ulverstone Secondary College, where he received the school’s highest award for Year 10, the AT Brown Award, and was the President of the Student Representative Council in 2019. As President, he was able to introduce a number of new measures, including student-led changes to school uniform, significant fundraising to support a local womens shelter, and the reintroduction of a school breakfast club. 14.02.2022 Rotary International President-elect Jennifer Jones (who is also our first female president) has announced the 2022-23 theme Imagine Rotary. Imagine, a world t...hat deserves our best, where we get up each day knowing that we can make a difference. The theme is a special one: the theme graphic was designed by an Australian Indigenous artist to link with the Melbourne Convention in 2023. Some of the symbolism includes: Circle connections to one another Dots around it - our people There are 7 Dots for Rotary's 7 areas of focus Circle + dots around it - a navigation star, our guiding light Green solid line - digging stick (used when doing hard work); for us it's People of Action, represents the tools for getting things done The colours purple, green & white - celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion Freedom to express ourselves differently but still with a special connection Purple is also the colour of Rotary's Polio campaign Green represents the Environment White stands for peace; it also represents Empowerment and Newness and also the colours were utilised for the women's movement, highlighting the opportunity to grow our female membership. What do you think of the new theme?

23.01.2022 The times they are a-changing! For the first time in Rotarys 115-year history, a woman has been named Rotary International president-nominee. The inspiring Jen...nifer Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Canada, has been nominated to become RI president for 2022-23, a selection that will make her the first woman to hold this office. A current Rotary Foundation trustee, Jennifer has been a member since 1997 and has served Rotary as vice president, director, training leader, committee chair, moderator, and district governor. We were fortunate enough to have Jennifer as our keynote speaker at the South Pacific Presidents Elect Training Seminar in Auckland, NZ, earlier this year, where she won over every seat in the house with her captivating storytelling, compassion and vivacious energy. Congratulations Jennifer and well done. We cant think of a more fitting leader to carry us into 2022-23. Photos: @rhysmartinphotographer

16.01.2022 This week we are promoting Kindness. World Kindness Australia was founded in May 2011 as a registered Not For Profit following the success of a local school cam...paign in 2009 to address the issues of bystander behaviour with the Courage To Be Kind. The global campaign aims to ensure Kindness engages everyone from our classrooms, to our staff rooms and from our Boardrooms and those residing in our corridors of Government. In Australia, the campaign is a way to address the fear associated with bystander behaviour in situations of bullying, however it has far more reach in a world which struggles to find the Courage To Be Kind and be the best it can be. #bekind

14.01.2022 STAGE 1 INSTALLED TODAY Beach to Bush Bollard Beautification Project ... The Penguin 7 Day Makeover Team is thrilled to unveil the first stage of its creative and colourful community art project completed in conjunction with talented Penguin District School Primary students . Earlier in the year the Penguin 7 Day Makeover Committee was the grateful recipient of a grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund to continue improvements and beautification in and around Penguins CBD . This provided our team with the opportunity to engage with local PDS students through an art project to dress up the bollards in front of the pharmacy and bank on the Main Road . The design brief of Beach to Bush what Penguin means to me , was embraced by students with 15 children submitting wonderful drawings reflecting what this idea meant to them. Their amazing A3 sized artworks were scanned and transferred to vinyl wraps by the team at D-Signs . Today the first stage of this project was installed on the bollards outside the Penguin Pharmacy. In June, as a lovely kind gesture of thanks, Joe and the team at Penguin Pharmacy, presented all participating student artists with a gift bag of goodies to acknowledge their creative efforts . We look forward to revealing the final stage of this project when the bollards near the Commonwealth Bank are completed . Thank you kids - they look amazing and will bring so much joy to everyone in our community. We look forward to seeing and reading what Penguin means to you . Big thanks to Tas Community Fund for helping us bring this to life .

11.01.2022 DonateLife Thank You Day on 22 November, is a national day to recognise all Australians who make organ and tissue donation possible. Each year thousands of Aust...ralian lives are saved and transformed through the generosity of deceased and living organ and tissue donors and their families. Families play a crucial role in the donation process because they’re asked to confirm their loved one wanted to be a donor and provide health information before donation proceeds. Families also help the broader community understand donation by generously sharing their stories, helping to educate Australians about donation and the comfort it can bring families. 10.01.2022 Wednesday night we had the pleasure of collaborating with Rapid Media in a project that gave young people the gift of surfing. Vaughan OConnor is the Managing ...Director of Rapid Media who spent the first 20 years of his life in Ulverstone. Vaughan shared how as a young boy, one of his fathers friends gifted him a surf board and how this changed his life forever! Now a few years later, he wanted to pay it forward to a new generation and hopes that this will inspire and change the lives of these young people just like it changed his. Unfortunately Vaughan was not able to make the event due to Covid-19, however there to make the presentations were his parents Brendan and Anne. Vaughan is also one of our sponsors for Doors to Mentors, so although he no longer is based locally on the Central Coast of Tassie he is still one of our communities champions. Thank you Vaughan, for your contribution to the young people in our community and thank you Brendan and Anne for your support on the night.

09.01.2022 Tomorrow, Monday 21 June, is the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere. It marks the shortest day of the year. This means from now until this year's summ...er solstice on the 22 December, days will start getting longer. Hours of daylight depend on your latitude or how far north or south you are. For places like Darwin, near the equator, the amount of daylight hours changes little with the seasons. In Hobart during the winter daylight hours are brief, some might say too brief. Hobart will see 2 hours and 21 minutes less daylight than Darwin on 21 June. The solstices are the two times each year when the tilt in Earth's axis lines up most with the direction of the Sun, creating the maximum difference between daylight and nighttime hours. It's also when the seasonal movement of the Sun's daily path (as seen from earth) reaches a northern or southern limit at noon, before gradually changing direction, moving back towards the other limit. Did you know the word 'solstice' comes from Latin? Owing to the Sun appearing to come to a 'standstill' in the sky when it reaches the Tropic of Cancer. The word 'solstitium' is a blend of the words sol (meaning 'sun') and sistere (meaning to 'standstill'). Read more about solstices in our blog: http://ow.ly/8yIT50Fd6jW

08.01.2022 Police are urging Tasmanians to take note of forecast weather warnings, with wet and icy conditions likely across the state overnight and tomorrow. The Bureau o...f Meteorology has issued warnings for road users and bushwalkers, and we need people to heed that advice. Wet conditions and ice and snow are on the way, which means our roads will be slippery and motorists will need to be extremely cautious. Strong and icy winds will also pose a serious risk to bushwalkers, so please reconsider if you were planning on doing a walk over the next few days. Police need Tasmanians to be sensible and to do what they can to keep themselves safe in these conditions. If youre travelling on the roads, remember: Never drive faster than the speed limit, and if conditions are wet, dark or frosty, slow down and travel at a speed that allows plenty of time to stop quickly and safely. Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front. Be aware roads can become slippery so drive accordingly. Dont allow distractions like mobile phones to affect your judgement and reaction times. Make sure you turn your headlights on if its dark, or visibility is poor. To stay up to date on road closures, check our Community Alerts at https://www.police.tas.gov.au/community-alerts/
