23.01.2022 Our meetings have been on line for several months and are as much fun as the in person meetings. This is evidenced by this picture from our meeting last night where we wore hats to promote Lift The Lid for Australian Rotary Health https://australianrotaryhealth.org.au/ A fun way to raise awareness and money for a great cause by wearing hats for the evening. We also inducted 2 new members which makes 3 new members in the past few months.

19.01.2022 To commemorate this special day we remember those in the armed forces both past and present. As the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK CVO MC (Retd) commented; today is also a day to honour the medical professionals and emergency services members who fight fires, protect and save lives and ensuring we win the war against our new enemy -COVID 19.

17.01.2022 The Story of the Woodend Avenue of Honour by Peter Whitelaw. With support from the Woodend RSL and the Woodend and District Heritage Society, Peter has captured... the story of the Woodend Avenue of Honour from its origins within the community near the end of World War 1 through to the re-enactment of Armistice Day in Woodend in 2018. The booklet (68 pages with 40 images) includes the discoveries Peter made when he first researched the history of the Avenue in 2009. He has reproduced articles from the Woodend Star about the planting of the oak trees in 1918, its ‘Grand Opening’ later that year and he describes what happened locally after the war. In 2011 Peter embarked upon a project to restore the names of the WW1 servicemen and women recognised at the Avenue by building the ‘Wall of Remembrance’ memorial. He relates the story of planning and building that memorial and its dedication in 2015. He describes the 2018 Armistice day celebration in Woodend and recognises the wonderful local knitted poppies project. The booklet includes a full list of names of the servicemen and women with a map identifying every tree in the Avenue. It also recognises the donors and contributors to the Wall of Remembrance. RRP $20.00 plus Pack and Post $3.50 To order a copy send an email to [email protected] for eft payment details. Each sale makes a contribution to Woodend RSL. See more

13.01.2022 Woodend Rotary is once again collecting Blanket, Coats and Swags for the Homeless. Thanks to Mort & Pestle for once again being a drop off point. Collection will continue until the end of June.... You would have noticed its getting a little colder over the last few weeks. Many of you may have your wood fires burning or your heating systems cranked up so your family can stay nice and warm. Have you thought about those that are doing it a little harder over the winter months? Over the last few years Woodend Rotary has coordinated a blanket drive and had great support from you, the Woodend Community. We know first-hand the real difference your donations make to Victorians doing it tough. Your support is required again this year as Woodend Rotary is coordinating the collection of blankets, coats and swags. Items such as scarves, gloves and hats are also gratefully accepted. Darker colours are preferred. Items must be clean and in good order. Items will then be transported to those in need and make a real and immediate impact to improve the condition for so many people. This is a smile generating project. Ours, yours and especially those receiving the items. I know the Woodend community will again get behind this project and look forward to being overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit shown by so many in our community.

07.01.2022 Bushfire fundraiser update- thanks to everyone who supported our Coles suasage sizzle in Woodend last Saturday. We raised a significant amount of money from both sausages and donations. As mentioned this was matched by a local business Fairhurst Conveyancing, and then with a top up from the club we have donated $2000 to the bushfire fund.

04.01.2022 Thanks to Woodend and surrounds for your support of Woodend Rotary in 2020. Even though it was different in many ways we managed to do some wonderful things in the community, learn many new skills, and continue with our projects both locally and overseas. WE continued to meet weekly with wonderful guest speakers from far and wide, and gain a few new members. Projects included The New Woodend Star, supporting Polio eradication, Cleft Palate repairs in Bangladesh, Building a ...school in Vanuatu, improving railway fence and entry to town, supporting local health care, community Halloween photo comp, bike donations for the needy, Bushfire support and much more. We have also taken time to make plans for future projects in the community. Looking at the positives it was a great year doing work in our community and around the world. WE are looking forward to 2021. Happy New Year. See more

03.01.2022 Woodend Rotary Community Halloween 2020 This will be the 11th consecutive Community Halloween event and this year we feel it is prudent and responsible to alter the event and have planned something different. 2020 will be a celebration of Halloween at home- a family photo competition. Just like the Woodend Rotarians shown in the photo, a lot of people dress up in wonderful costumes for the occasion which adds to the wonderful atmosphere. This year the aim is to get dressed ...up and post a family photo on the Woodend Rotary Facebook page by 7pm on Saturday 31st October 2020. Join in the fun and be part of this community event with a difference. There are prizes. We can all share, admire and applaud the wonderful costumes. A judging panel of Woodend Rotarians will select three outstanding contributions and prizes will be announced on line and awarded following the event. Photos of family groups submitted on the Woodend Rotary Facebook page will constitute an agreement by parents and guardians that the photo of children can be shared on the Facebook page. Photos may also be used in future publication of The New Woodend Star. Grant Hocking Woodend Rotary
