05.01.2022 MAN STUBS TOE ON SENSATIONAL SAPPHIRE TREASURE Its not every day that you go for a walk in the bush and come home $30,000 richer. But this is exactly what ha...ppened to a Sapphire Gemfields resident recently. As luck would have it the local, who wishes to remain anonymous, was having a wander through the local Reward fossicking area, minding his own business and kicking over a few stones when much to his surprise he turned over the find of a lifetime. Known in fossicking circles as specking, this in laymans terms is simply having a walk through the bush, eyes down and keenly tuned to any small change of colour or a hint of sparkle where the sun might catch the edge of a partly submerged but often dirty gem. For this lucky specker, it was all about being in the right place at the right time, Central Highlands Tourism Development Officer Peter Grigg says. There had been considerable rain a week or so before and there it was, lying tantalisingly within reach on the surface of the ground, well away from the usual sweating, blisters and hard work that is required when digging sapphires. In what are the largest sapphire fossicking fields in the southern hemisphere, the chances of specking a significant stone such as this are high, but a gem of this quality is exceptional. It was just lying there waiting for someone to unearth the valuable stone. After picking up the somewhat dirty stone, the local specker gave it the usual spit and polish on his shirt sleeve, realising then that indeed he had found a quality stone, one that both the casual and the more serious fossicker dream about. Lyle Poole, an avid gem hunter and long-time fossicker who calls the Gemfields home for a number of months every year said after viewing the stone, What a beauty, its finds like this that keep me coming back every year. I only got back here (Rubyvale) yesterday and I cant wait to get out there and start looking for my sparkler like that one! Ive found my share over the years but its always a thrill to find a good one. In fact, the parti-coloured stone weighed in at 141 carats, is crystal clear and in its rough (uncut) state could fetch upwards of $30,000. I find it amazing that after 100 plus years of people scratching around in the ground at the Sapphire Gemfields stones of this quality continually pop up, Mr Grigg added. I too, like to consider myself a specker and have been scratching around for quite a few years and have a great collection of horse shoe nails, old bottle tops and broken bits of this and that but I did speck a small but crystal clear blue sapphire one Sunday afternoon. The Sapphire Gemfields are located 50kms west of Emerald, 300kms west of Rockhampton and during the cooler months from March through to September the area is a mecca for visitors looking for a little adventure and maybe the chance to supplement their travelling costs by unearthing a precious gem of their own.
