19.01.2022 The Black Dog Institute's 'One Foot Forward' campaign begins TOMORROW (October 1), and Rovers Victoria have a team! We would love for you to get involved by joining the team too! Sign up here: https://www.onefootforward.org.au/fundr/RoverScoutsVictoria (You can also use this link to track our progress, donate to the Black Dog Institute, or find more information and a variety of awesome resources surrounding mental health!) Read more about our involvement in One Foot Forward ...here (tw: mental illness and suicide) -- This October, Rovers Victoria are participating in the Black Dog Institute’s ‘One Foot Forward’ campaign, by walking to support people experiencing symptoms of mental illness. Now more than ever, it is so important to promote and support mental health, particularly as young people in Victoria; and we are committing to not only walk and raise funds for the Black Dog Institute, but better educate ourselves and each other by engaging in conversation and activism surrounding mental health. Did you know that 1 in 5 people experience symptoms of mental illness each year? In fact, every day in Australia, 8 people will die from suicide. Mental illness can be debilitating and can have a devastating impact on not only those living with it, but those around them. But this October, we’ll be putting one foot forward to make a difference to the lives of people touched by mental illness and suicide. We're fundraising to raise money for life-changing research into treatment and prevention of mental illness, as well as vital support services. Support our challenge and help change the lives of people living with mental illness.

18.01.2022 In light of the new government restrictions, the Surfmoot team has worked alongside the Scouts Victoria and VRC teams, and are planning to go full steam ahead w...ith Surfmoot! We know there has been some worry about whether we could run, and we want you all to know that we appreciate your concerns but we want to power on for you! We want to make this camp as safe as possible, but still a great outlet and light at the end of the tunnel! We are working within the guidelines set out by the state government and currently filling out our event application, we will be keeping everyone updated - but it looks good! We have decided that due to government regulations and guidelines, we are no longer able to take gate tickets for our 2021 so the last day you can get tickets will be the 8th of January. 16.01.2022 Today we are very excited to announce our next OB Profile! Introduciing Andrew!! Read below What is your name/nickname, what are your pronouns, and which unit are you from? ‘Andrew, He/Him, Port Phillip Rover Unit’... What is your role on VRC and what does that entail? ‘NRC Delegate, representing the state to the National Rover Council, and reporting back to the state on whatever happens at their meetings’ Why did you choose to take on this role, and what are you most looking forward to within it? ‘I chose this role because I’ve always believed that open and clear communication through all levels of scouting is vital to us running smoothly, this role lets me put my money where my mouth is, and I’m now able to make sure anyone that wants to can know what’s happening at national. I think I’m most looking forward to being able to get the ‘grassroots’ rovers more involved in the discussions had at a national level, making sure everyone, from a rover that just goes to their unit nights, to the VRC office bearers, can have their say and feel heard.’ What is your favourite Scout memory and why? ‘The first one I think of is from NZ venture 2016, I was doing the shooting expedition. There was one day our group was on the air rifle range, when at some point, someone decided to put a couple empty coke cans out as targets. Without really planning it, we somehow ended up splitting into two teams and racing the cans up the hill by shooting them, until they were so full of holes, we couldn’t hit them properly.’ What is your favourite Scout meal/recipe and why? ‘Well it’s not exactly a camp recipe, but I would have to say my homemade cakes, I’ve brought them to enough scout events now that I reckon it counts. Because a fresh mud cake makes any meeting, training course, or other event so much more enjoyable, and I really enjoy making them.’ Two truths and a lie ‘1. I fell asleep during the first NRC meeting I attended; 2. I have earned two of the 5 sections’ peak awards; 3. I got my Messengers of Peace award by accident.’ Thank you so much Andrew! We’re so excited to have you as our NRC Delegate and can’t wait to see all that you get up to

(Just one sentence is great!) ‘Assistant Chair, I support our Subcommittees-Assests and Major events, and advocate for them at a state level’ Why did you choose to take on this role, and what are you most looking forward to within it? ‘Wanted a new challenge in Rovers, after spending a lot of time on various Subcommittees, I wanted to be able to be able to advocate for them’ What is your favourite Scout memory and why? ‘Completing the Overland track - it was just a great experience with some amazing views.’ What is your favourite Scout meal/recipe and why? ‘Definitely roast chicken and veg, it was always something I wanted to try cooking on camps. You hang a chook between star pickets and in the morning over coals and it's done by dinner time, perfect meal to cook throughout the day while you’re off adventuring.’ Two truths and a lie! ‘I've never been on an international scouting trip; I once got interview on the radio while in Cubs; I met the King of Sweden when he was in Australia’ Thanks Matty! Can’t wait to see all the awesome stuff you get up to whilst on VRC!

07.01.2022 Happy Friday!! For today’s OB profile we are stoked to introduce . Maddy! Read here for the interview: What is your name/nickname, what are your pronouns, and which unit are you from? ‘Maddy, She/Her, Port Phillip Rover Unit!’... What is your role on VRC and what does that entail? ‘My role in VRC is Secretary. I take the minutes of the VRC meetings, making sure Vic Rovers receive all the important information that is discussed.’ Why did you choose to take on this role, and what are you most looking forward to within it? ‘I have held the secretary role in a few different committees and I love the organisation that comes along with it. It is also an amazing way to meet new people and gain amazing experiences & opportunities, which is what I am looking forward to most.’ What is your favourite Scout memory and why? ‘Oh there are so many to choose from, they are all so good! But more recently I loved having the chance to attend the World Moot in Iceland. The whole experience of being in a new culture, camping amongst gorgeous scenery and meeting amazing people is something I will hold close to me forever.’ What is your favourite Scout meal/recipe and why? ‘My favourite Scout meal is a simple, burnt box chocolate cake. I loved it so much because it was cooked using a cardboard box as an oven, and its not everyday you can say you burnt a cake in a cardboard box.’ Two truths and a lie! ‘1. I joined Scouting as soon as I could, the day I turned 6 I was invested into Joeys; 2. I have been to 2 Australian Moots; 3. The first knot I ever learnt was the Bowline at a Group Camp I attended before I was even invested. I was four!’ Thank you so much Maddy! VRC are very excited to have you on the team this year! --- The answer to Grace’s two truths a lie was: ‘holding my QS certificate upside down was totally unintentional and to this day I’m still spewing that it’s like that in most of the pics and nobody bothered to tell me’

05.01.2022 Happy Wear It Purple Day from Rover Scouts Victoria!! 'Wear it Purple strives to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow young people.' (wearitpurple.org) Hear from one of our Rovers about what it means to be Queer in Scouting - ... 'Scouting has provided me with a safe place to explore my identity and has brought me out of my shell discovering myself since joining our wonderful movement. I will always stand by the fact that joining the movement when I was a 14-year-old was the best decision I have ever made; I owe my identity to scouting having had my "Queer awakening" if you will on a much loved scouting event. With support from amazing Queer individuals within the movement I've found confidence in the safety scouting provides for me to truly be myself. It is vital for there to be a safe place for youth to be able to explore who they are away from pressures of home and scouting provides this to so many of our members. Scouting has changed my life for the better and I am forever grateful to be able to be proud to be a Queer Rover Scout.' -- We hope you've had a wonderful WIP Day, and use this as a reminder that Rovers will remain a place that is inclusive and safe for everyone!
