04.01.2022 Drowning in an ocean.....just put yourself in this farmer’s shoes for one minute. Imagine wading through water that extends as far as you look in any direction..., in a place where you can see the curvature of the earth on the horizon. Imagine the desperation it takes to stand there with one of the few remaining live animals that you can find wondering how the bloody hell you can save it. Imagine the glimmer of hope after days and days on end of driving rain, cold winds and flood waters, to finally hear the beat of choppers bringing in fodder. Imagine then aerially dropping that hay to the miserable few survivors, only to have them lay down on the hay in final relief and die without taking a bite, they were just too exhausted. Actually not one of us can imagine, we can’t imagine the horror, we can’t imagine the mental torture felt by these people. These people who everyday deal with hardship, who for the last six years stared extreme drought in the face but who never could have imagined an apocalypse of this proportion. Now imagine what it would be like, when your cries for help were met with a barrage of vile abuse around veganism, around vegetation management, around climate change. How did we as a nation get to this point? How did we get to a point where every other group of people is afforded a level of protection against abuse with the exception of farmers? How did the supposed moral high ground turn into a group of people who can execute this kind of torture against their fellow mankind, against salt of the earth people who are some of the hardest working, philanthropic and community minded people in our country? A True Story started on a mission to counter some of the emotive, skewed and plain untrue messages about farming and in particular the situation where a game of politics was played with farmer’s reputations. Our hearts are broken for our farmers in Northern Queensland right now. A couple of weeks ago we had families who simply decided to plant a cotton crop instead of a wheat crop who received death threats. The week before we had people publish a website nominating the private addresses of family farms and calling them rapists and murderers. To the audience of a True Story, we hope you can help us arrest this blight on the culture of Australia. We cannot use family farmers as political footballs to press agendas it is just wrong and the pain that it is causing to our farmers on a daily basis is beyond measure. We call on the leaders of every political party in this country to come out and condemn the statements that have been made about our farmers. If you don’t speak out you are complicit in this and that indeed is a very sad day for Australia. Lastly, it hurts to ask given the generosity of so many Australians to our farmers in the last twelve months, but if you can spare the time to write a letter to a politician to stop this, if you could spare the time to write a message of support to our farmers, even just a share of this message, if you are able to take a moment to reach one more time into your hearts, we would be sincerely grateful.
