19.01.2022 I’d like to welcome Wendy Hewertson, Social Worker and Behaviour Specialist to the Connect and Thrive Psychology team. Wendy has over 14 years experience working in Canada and Australia and has worked for the Queensland Government’s Disability Services in clinical and management roles. This has included support for individuals, families, residential service providers, and schools to assist in understanding and supporting people with intellectual disabilities, Autism, and oth...er psychosocial disabilities using Positive Behaviour Support, Strength Based, Solution Focused, and Person Centred approaches. Wendy has more recently worked in the area of Mental Health, supporting children and young people on child protection orders living in residential placements who have experienced complex developmental trauma. Wendy incorporates systemic interventions, trauma and attachment theory, sensory processing and low arousal approaches into her therapeutic and Behaviour Support work. See more

16.01.2022 I always find it exciting when new resources arrive for my practice. I’d love to hear what helpful resources/book others have?

14.01.2022 I had the benefit of attending Maria Aarts’ training a number of years ago when she came to Australia. Her approach is called Marte Meo which means in one’s own strength. It’s an attachment based approach that supports social and emotional development that was originally designed for use with children on the spectrum. This approach has profoundly impacted my practice, and in particular working within the strengths of a dyadic relationship as a starting point.

05.01.2022 The importance of co-regulation during the early years

03.01.2022 I’m a big fan of supplementing verbal communication with visuals. In addition to the below 9 reasons, it helps make communication explicit and clear. It becomes like a shared agreement between two people about what to expect and what will happen. Sometimes we can forget to clearly communicate changes or variations with the people we support. The use of visuals remind us to stick to the plan or to explicitly state a change.
