25.01.2022 Italian Greyhound pup Wendy and her owner Hayley from our most recent vet visit to Roxby Downs. Little Wendy was in for some puppy vaccinations and I think the face says it all about how she was feeling! Did you know it is believed the Italian Greyhound breed originated over 2000 years ago in what we know today and Greece and Turkey. Its interesting to know just how ancient some breeds are!

16.01.2022 Seaside Vets Roxby Downs will be handing over our clinic to Dr Roger from Redgum Vet in Port Augusta. Roger has been making regular vet visits to Andamooka so may be a familiar face for many of you already. We would like to thank all of you from the Roxby Downs community for your support over the past 2 years of our visiting. We have very much enjoyed our trips to Roxby and meeting you all, as well as looking after your beloved pets. Please call Redgum Vets on 86 423 308 for... all further veterinary needs. We are in the process of having your pets veterinary records transferred to them so they will be aware of any medical conditions/vaccination or other health status. Thank you again, Dr John Carles Seaside Veterinary Surgery

15.01.2022 RAT BAIT season has begun with the little critters making their way into our homes and yards, so we remind the public on a few important points to be aware of t...o help keep our furry family members safe. - There is NO SUCH THING as rat bait that is safe / pet friendly or deters pets. - Without treatment, rat bait poisoning can cause the death of your pet, just as it does with mice. - Rat bait is an anti-coagulant, meaning it thins the blood and causes internal bleeding. Severe cases often require a life-saving blood transfusion. - While it is less-likely, if your pet eats mice (often large amounts) that have been killed by rat bait, this CAN also cause the poisoning of your pet. (We have seen this in the past) - Signs of poisoning often take 48-72 hours to show AFTER the poison has been ingested - so even if you do not have bait on your property, it is possible they have got into some whilst out for a walk/on holiday. - Rat Bait can stay in your pets system for 4-6 weeks, so they require a long course of medication to help thicken the blood and prevent internal bleeding. Signs of Rat Bait toxicity can include: - Depression/Lethargy or decreased ability to move freely - Bruising on the skin - Pale coloured gums - Blood observed in vomit/faeces or urine - Coughing - Vomiting WHAT TO DO? If you observe or suspect your pet has consumed rat bait, they will require URGENT veterinary attention. If caught early enough we can induce vomiting to clear as much poison from the gut as soon as possible before it is absorbed by the body. If very large quantities have been consumed then it may be necessary for your pet to have an anaesthetic so we can pump out the stomach. Patients also often require IV fluids to help the liver cope with filtering out any absorbed poison. ***If you are a bit of a drive from the closest vet clinic, we do stock containers of washing soda for owners to have on hand in case of poisoning. It is a natural washing soda with no phosphates or dyes added. This can be used by owners to try and induce vomiting as soon as possible. Another alternative is to force very salty water into your pet to try and induce vomiting.
14.01.2022 Important notice from Seaside Vet We are getting a lot of questions about sick pets via our facebook page. Please be aware that this page is not monitored every day. If your pet is Sick you must ring the clinic, please do not rely on facebook.... This is especially true after hours for emergencies. Do not message us via facebook as we will always miss your message if its urgent. The same goes for re scheduling appointments. Also a note on Private Messages to our vets and nurses. Our vets and nurses receive a lot of private messages about their sick pets from their facebook friends. I know it may seem pretty harmless to ask our staff about your pet through their private facebook page, but everyone needs their time off to switch off from work after a busy week. On average our vets receive 3 or 4 private messages a weekend about your sick pets when they are not on call. We always want to be there to help you but the best way is to ring the clinic. We have a vet rostered on call 24/7, all you need to do is ring the clinic number and our answering machine will give you the vet on calls telephone number. That is the best way to help us help you look after your sick pets TELEPHONE 88 233 233 please save this 24 hour number in your phone Thank you for your understanding, John

13.01.2022 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RABBIT OWNERS! The new variant of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV-K5) is being released at over 600 select sites across Australia during the first week of March 2017 (see website link below for a map). It is important rabbit owners are aware of the risk and take the necessary precautions with their pets to keep them as protected as possible from the fatal disease. A SMALL pilot study has shown that the CURRENT RHDV1 vaccine (Cylap vaccine) ha...s been effective against protecting pet rabbits - however as this was only a small study it cannot be 100% guaranteed. We STRONGLY suggest all pet rabbit owners ensure their pets are up to date with the current vaccine (i.e. they have been vaccinated within the past 6 months). Please note that the Cylap vaccine has not been tested for use against RHDV 2 strain - which was first recorded in Australian in 2015 and was not intentionally released by authorities. It is recommended that all pet rabbits receive the following vaccine schedule: Kits: Vaccinate at 4, 8 and 12 weeks of age - and then once every 6 months for life. Adults: Receive 2 vaccinations, 1 month apart - and then once every 6 months for life. NOTE: This use is OFF LABEL - meaning tests have not been done to explore the effects of receiving the vaccine every 6 months - it has only been tested for use every 12 months. Further precautions recommended for rabbit owners: - Prevent direct and indirect contact between wild rabbits and pet rabbits (keep pets inside). - Flies spread the disease - so cover hutches in insect proof netting. This is also suggested to protect pet rabbits from Myxomatosis. - Avoid feeding rabbits cut grass from the garden as this may be contaminated from wild rabbits or flies. - Wash hands thoroughly with warm soapy water between handling each rabbit. - Infected rabbits should be isolated and disposed of in a manner to minimise environmental contamination. - Disinfect all cages and equipment between use. Image: Nibbles visited us this week to receive his vaccination.
