24.01.2022 The Royal Aeronautical Society Canberra Branch had the privilege of hosting Dr. Billy Fredkrisson at Questacon last night as the International Eminent Speaker, in conjunction with Engineers Australia. Dr. Fredriksson provided a unique insight into Swedish Aeronautics: Industry, Research, Technologies and Innovation. The former Saab Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer highlighted the challenges and solutions to developing the multirole Gripen fighter aircraft; the impact of these types of advanced high technology projects on other industries; and what made it possible for a small country like Sweden to develop fighter aircraft.

13.01.2022 Dr Giorgia Longobardi has been named RAEng Engineers Trust Young #Engineer of the Year Dr Longobardi, co-founder and CEO of Cambridge GaN Devices Ltd (CGD),... a spin-out from the Department of Engineering, was picked as one of five young female #engineers by the Royal Academy of Engineering who have been outstandingly successful in their respective fields at an early stage of their careers. 12.01.2022 Tonight the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) Canberra Branch hosted Wing Commander Steve Henry, DD Surveillance of Space at RAAF and RAAF Liaison Officer for the Australian Space Agency. An incredibly fascinating and thought-provoking presentation that covered both land and air capability that is coordinated globally to progress space situational awareness and technology. We catered to one of our largest ever audiences which has undoubtedly put the RAeS CBR momentum in good stead for 2019! Each month RAeS CBR holds a lecture on current aviation and aerospace topics from highly distinguished and decorated leaders. Stay tuned for our next major event in March!

11.01.2022 Last week, on Zoom, Canberra's own, LTCOL Keirin Joyce, described the current status of ADF UAS, and discussed the path to a highly autonomous future. Here's the recording! Vid edit credit to #RoguePerspectives, two cool Canberra STEM'ers with camera skills. ADF investment in unmanned aerial systems is increasing and is expected to exceed $20 billion over the next decade. The three services are seeking to exploit the advantages these systems and are seeking to expand their roles in supporting their operational capabilities. The UAS platforms range from the the smallest hand held devices to full-scale aircraft and each present challenges in their effective use and support. 10.01.2022 RAeS August Monthly Lecture: Colonel James B Brown, Director Battlefield Aviation Program, speaks on the Future of Australian Army Aviation. Colonel Brown entered the Australian Army in 1991, becoming a pilot in 1993. He is a qualified Aerial Fire Support gunship pilot and was Officer Commanding 171 Operational Support Squadron before becoming Commanding Officer of 5 Aviation Regiment. He has also undertaken a number of training appointments, including as a Pilot Instructor... with the United States Army Aviation Training Centre and Commandant Australian Army Aviation Training Centre. As a staff officer, Colonel Brown worked on the Introduction to Operational Service of the Multi-Role Helicopter (MRH) 90, Assistant Chief of Staff and Director Aviation Capability Management in Headquarters Forces Command. Colonel Brown has significant operational experience including Bougainville, Solomon Islands, Sumatra, Iraq and Afghanistan. 04.01.2022 Eyes to the skies tomorrow at approx 10.30am. Aircraft flypast over Russell, Parliament House and along King’s Avenue for the official Chief of Air Force change... of command ceremony. The flypasts will feature the aircraft types that have been accepted into Air Force during the tenure of the outgoing Chief of Air Force, including EA-18G Growler, P-8A Poseidon, Dassault Falcon 7X, PC-21 and F-35A Joint Strike Fighter. Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Leo Davies, AO CSC will officially hand over command of the Royal Australian Air Force to Air Marshal Mel Hupfeld, AO DSC at the formal Change of Command Ceremony and parade.
