15.01.2022 Keelboat "Start Crewing" course Sunday 15 Dec 2019 at RMYS, St.Kilda. Graduation day after sailing on J80 Cafe Latte.

14.01.2022 Keelboat Start Crewing course on J80 Cafe Latte. Sailing off Williamstown with Ewan, Marco, Rosario and Julian with instructor Leigh Brennan-Smith of Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy.

13.01.2022 Just a quick update from Leigh at the Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy. With sail training postponed indefinitely boat maintenance is in full swing whilst our yard is still open. Here is J24 Keelboat "Double Exposure" having its deck painted after being relaunched from RMYS on Friday. The gritty deckpaint we use is essential to stay onboard, but hard to apply as it is gunky (technical term) and readily clogs brushed and rollers. Lucky it's a once in 5 year job.... We had a good January to mid- March sailing period with lots of classes until about the 15 th March, when social distancing came in force for Covid -19. Schools (one of larger customer groups) have also closed early for the Easter holidays. Holiday programs for childten and youth, whilst needed by parents who work, have also been postponed. With luck we may get through this by Spring 2020. My thanks to my instructors and staff (who number over 10) for their support this year and wish them all the best through these tough times. Our small business will bounce back. To our customers, friends and families lets look forward to better times ahead. Please stay safe and healthy. Sailing is not over, it's just hibernating!

13.01.2022 Maintenance. One advantage of "not" sail training is to finalise those ongoing maintenance tasks. Our Columbia 27 "Via Mia" circa 1978 and Melbourne made is up in the RMYS yard at the moment. In today's rainy weather in my shed I was able to start to repair the two wooden lazarette covers. For those not in the know a "lazarette" is a locker at the back of a boat traditionally used for storing boating gear belonging to the boatswain on a sailing vessel. The C27 has two man sized... lazarette accessed from the cockpit. I say "man size because you can get into them and repair the motor from the side if necessary. My repair of the rotten wooden cover edges (as shown the photo) was achieved with two new hardwood strips glued with epoxy and screwed in place. To finish I will use a timber preserver on the bare wood, then an epoxy barrier coat followed by undercoating and two top coats. All International Paints. I am doing similar repairs to the companionway entry hatches (also wooden) to prolong their service. These repairs will last many years and whilst ongoing, are part of the joy of owning a boat particularly as I am more of a carpenter than electrician.Lucky most of the boat is GRP which is low maintenance. More photos when I finish. See more

11.01.2022 Mast maintenance Columbia 27 "Via Mia". Just few photos showing our progress re-rigging and maintaining the mast. Removal via mast crane @ RBYC (many thanks), new aluminium spreaders required due to corrosion and rebedding of the SS mast fitting with rivets and Duralac anti - corrosion paste. New SS rigging wire, plus new lights and instruments will finish the project off. Mast back up within 2 weeks.

10.01.2022 From keen yard observer. More like "Le Pink Poodle" than a Red Dog! Major paint job on Don' s yacht in the yard - undercoat phase only.Stay safe!
