20.01.2022 Today's World Hello Day, so it's the perfect time for us to introduce ourselves - and say hello Joseph Reed, of the firm Reed and Barnes, was the architect (great work, we know). Reed’s was a grand design, influenced by Rundbogenstil, a round-arched architectural style combining elements from Byzantine, Romanesque, Lombardic and Italian Renaissance buildings. The dome’s design was influenced by Brunelleschi’s 15th-century cathedral in Florence. When it was built, the Great Hall was the largest building in Australia, and the highest building in Melbourne. There was also a viewing platform around the dome that allowed visitors to survey the progress of the booming city - soon you'll have a chance to explore the dome yourself. 19.01.2022 This black & white postcard of the Royal Exhibition Building, shows the south east facade of the building from Nicholson Street, made circa 1905. The postcard was actually printed in Leipzig, Germany and features a photograph by JW Lindt. JW Lindt worked as a photographer in Melbourne between 1876 & 1881 with this photograph most likely taken immediately before or after the Melbourne International Exhibition, as it depicts the obelisk and lighthouse in the garden but no flags... are atop the building. Postcards have been a part of our lives for so long now but did you know that the division of the reverse of the postcard, allowing a message to be written on one half and the address on the other, was not permitted in Britain until 1902 and Australia until 1905? https://fal.cn/3gggI

18.01.2022 Gilt-bronze medal issued to school children to commemorate the opening of the First Federal Parliament of Australia on 9 May 1901. It was minted by Stokes & Sons. It features portrait busts of Queen Victoria & Edward VII on the obverse and the Duke and Dutchess of Cornwall and York on the reverse.
18.01.2022 The opening of the Australian Parliament on 9 May 1901 was an occasion for great celebrations in Melbourne. Ten days of festivities (from 6-16 May) were planned to mark the Federation of the new nation and honour the Royal visitors, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York. The city was transformed with decorations - flags, bunting, colourful lights and festive arches - and a series of public events were held, including a military tattoo and several street parades. Unprecedented numbers of people arrived in Melbourne from the rest of Victoria and throughout Australia to take part in the celebrations. 12,000 people attended the opening event which took place in the REB; invited guests were allocated seats in the great hall, while general ticket holders sat in unreserved seating areas at the back of the naves and on the mezzanine.

13.01.2022 On 9 May 1901, twelve thousand people made their way to the Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens to witness the opening of the first Federal Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia by the heir to the British throne, His Royal Highness the Duke of Cornwall and York. One of those people was Mrs Sabina Peipers and she accompanied her father, the Consul for the German Empire, Wilhelm Alexander Brahe wearing this stunning gown. Due to the recent death of Queen Victoria, roy...al etiquette demanded that all guests wore sombre colours such as black, white, grey or purple to the ceremony - but this didn't prevent the event from being a glittering affair. The dress was donated to Museums Victoria by descendants of Mrs Peipers and it was altered around 1910-1914 to reflect the new slimline fashions of the day. 11.01.2022 For nearly 50 years, hundreds of items lay hidden within the Royal Exhibition Building and we are working to reveal more. After Darwin was bombed in February 1942, the threat of war loomed over Melbourne. Trench Digging took place in parks and gardens and for RAFF trainees stationed at the Royal Exhibition Buildings, it became a competitive sport. For more information on these veterans and their stories, visit our website: https://fal.cn/3bxpn This project is made possible thanks to the support of the Victorian Government’s Department of Premier and Cabinet and Victoria Remembers.
