13.01.2022 What have you struggled with the most since the coronavirus precautions flipped your weekly routine on its head? For me it was finding my feet and a new flow in a revised routine which was much more flexible than it had been before. Gone were the blocks of back-to-back sessions with clients stretching throughout the day.... Gone were the scheduled development sessions and catch-ups with the team. Gone were windows of opportunity between appointments for business admin and client programming Gone were my own scheduled workouts at my local gym Despite seemingly having more time on my hands with which to be productive, without a stack of tasks being clearly defined and scheduled, I found that my to-do list wasn’t shrinking and my newly drafted at-home workouts weren’t happening as I’d planned. I felt that I was simultaneously busier than ever trying to pivot my business and provide for my clients in a new way while watching time slip through my fingers and feeling like I’d accomplished nothing. I needed to start over and make a new plan, as me failing to plan had me planning to fail. With fewer external appointments to keep me on track, I had to plan and drive my own schedule and limit my spare time to ensure I was achieving all that I needed and wanted to each week. Probably even more important than anything work related, however, was time for self-care practices. I knew I had to make time for them or they wouldn't happen. I knew, for me, that I had to schedule when I would be meditating and moving each day, because, while they're incredible for my physical and mental wellbeing, they can fall by the wayside if I don’t make time for them and prioritise them against other things that can pop up throughout the day. If you’re watching the days and weeks pass you by and you have seen some of those healthy practices that used to piggy-back your former day-to-day activities disappear, be sure to lock them in to your new weekly routine. Don’t rely on them just happening if I find time. Schedule them into your calendar, no matter how menial (yep, sometimes hydration breaks need to be scheduled ) and hold yourself accountable

10.01.2022 Australia’s National Cabinet has outlined a 3 step roadmap for easing restrictions across Australia, with outdoor bootcamps of up to 10 people and use of outdoor gyms to be permitted in step 1, and gyms to be allowed to re-open doors in step 2 (details of required precautions and timelines are state specific and dependant on review of impacts of preceding step). It can ...be tempting, right, especially considering the amount of time lost away from the squat rack over the past 7 weeks But let’s hold our horses for just a moment here; how you have, or haven’t, trained since March should influence your re-entry to training in the gym. Change in training intensity and/or stimulus (particularly if training has been abandoned) can result in the decline of various aspects of physiological conditioning (i.e. your ‘fitness’), and the degree of decline needs to be considered when re-commencing training. - Have you parked strength work in favour of at-home HIIT workouts? - Has walking through the park taken place of your favourite spin class? - Has watching The Last Dance on Netflix become the closest you’ve come to exercise in the last 2 months? Here are 4 tips for re-commencing training in the gym that could help ensure you’re properly set up to regain the gains you’d previously worked so hard to achieve and avoid injury: 1- Start slow If you haven’t deadlifted your 5RM in 7 weeks, there is no way you should be attempting to do so when you resume strength training in a month’s time. Studies have shown that strength loss can occur with as little as 2-3 weeks of inactivity. How much you lose depends on how strong/conditioned you were before you stopped training and your degree of inactivity, but I’ll go out on a limb and say that, if you haven’t been training consistently at your previous intensity, right now you’re not as strong as you used to be.
