25.01.2022 Recently Blankets of Love - Townsville/ Thuringowa Branch celebrated 20 years of making quilts for sick children, palliative care centres and parents who have lost children at, or shortly after, birth. Nola Hills established the group in October 2000 after the passing of her tiny grandson. For the last 12 years, they’ve also made blankets for our Townsville Base. Our staff give these quilts to our young patients to help them feel a little less unsure, and also sometimes to t...hose a little older who still need a bit of comfort. Thank you for helping keep our patients comfortable and congratulations on the past 20 years of serving the local community!

Staff also enjoyed a traditional dance performance by Nunukul Yuggera, followed by a bush tucker afternoon tea.... RFDS (Queensland Section) CEO Meredith Staib said the week helped highlight the importance of reconciliation, creating a greater awareness and understanding of local Indigenous history and culture within our workforce.

23.01.2022 As Christmas approaches, we need your help. RFDS (Queensland Section) needs to raise $362,073 to buy life-saving equipment, including two new Hamilton ventilators. These ventilators will be used to care for babies like Zac and his mother Jemma. ... We had to transfer Zac from Gladstone to Brisbane just after he was born because he couldn’t breathe. A big baby, he lacked surfactants a lubricant that keeps the airways open, and he was in terrible danger. Luckily, we were able to help, but this Christmas we urgently need to raise money to buy life-saving equipment so we can care for more babies and their mothers. You can donate to our Christmas appeal here: https://rfds-qld.giveeasy.org/2020-christmas-appeal

18.01.2022 One in four teenagers between the age of 12-17 gets sunburnt on a summer weekend. Sadly Australia has an unhealthy tanning culture that spreads in the summertime with many Australians often trying to get a 'healthy tan'. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a 'healthy tan' as tanning is a sign that you have been exposed to UV radiation at a level that has damaged your skin, increasing your risk of skin cancer. This National Skin Cancer Action Week the Flying Doctor is e...ncouraging people to get serious about sun protection going into the summer months. Wear protective clothing, sunnies, sunscreen, a hat, and seek shade where you can. #sunscreen #sunsafety #skincancerawareness #seekshade #rfdsse #rfds
17.01.2022 We’re honoured to be one of the charities that Sam Hughes, aka The Travelling Jackaroo, is supporting with his travels around the country on his tractor! All our staff are looking forward to seeing you at our bases when you’re in town. Keep up the great work.

15.01.2022 This photo might look a bit funny, but ear protection for children when they fly with us is essential. Recently Ems for Kids - Hearing Protection for Little Ears donated 16 pairs of infant earmuffs to RFDS (Queensland Section)! In the 12 months prior to September 30, the RFDS (Queensland Section) transferred more than 730 infants in our aircraft.... Flying in our aircraft can often be loud and confronting for infants and having ear protection like this plays a crucial role in helping keep children calm and comfortable. Thank you to Earmuffs for Kids for the donation! Here’s Flight Nurse Marie with Baby Anne, one of our infant training mannequins.
14.01.2022 NEWS JUST IN! We were delighted this morning to accept the 2020 SA Health Supplier Award for Innovation for the development of the RFDS Mount Gambier Patient Transfer Facility (PTF). The new PTF, made possible through community and corporate fundraising efforts, ensures our RFDS crews can protect South-East patients from the elements during transfers onto and off Flying Doctor aircraft at all times of the day and night.... It didn’t take long for the PTF to demonstrate its all-weather capabilities - in the first 100 days of operation, there was rainfall in Mount Gambier on 43 days! During this time, RFDS crews landed at Mount Gambier 158 times and airlifted 239 patients. We are very proud to deliver an innovative local asset that has been well and truly backed by the South-East community. Thank you for your generosity! Mount Gambier RFDS Support Group
14.01.2022 Yesterday we got to do something incredible Almost two years ago, Jemma experienced several complications during her birth with Zac, which resulted in the RFDS (Queensland Section) transferring mum and bub to Brisbane from Gladstone. This week, the family was reunited with Flight Nurse Haidee who assisted in their transfer home! ... It’s not often that we get to reunite patients with the staff who cared for them, but it’s amazing when we can

08.01.2022 Happy Monday everyone! Here you can see some of our Broken Hill engineers #socialdistancing. Social distancing reduces the risk of catching viruses like COVID-19. Social distancing means you can still work and use public transport but you should avoid crowds and gatherings, stay 1.5 metres away from others, avoid shaking hands, hugging and avoid visiting vulnerable people. A heartfelt thank you to all those people practicing social distancing. You are helping to protect the... community and those who are vulnerable. #flyingdoctor #rfds #thanks #socialdistancing #coronavirus #rfdsse #brokenhill

06.01.2022 With more of us at home this year and dealing with stress induced by the pandemic, it’s hardly surprising that many people are resorting to drinking alcohol to find calm. A recent survey from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation also found one in five Australians has regretted how much they drank in lockdown. A similar proportion considered reducing their consumption but is yet to do so. The Flying Doctor is encouraging people to give booze the boot this October to increase wellbeing and improve mental health.

06.01.2022 Today is the Birthday of RFDS founder Reverend John Flynn - the man on the Twenty Dollar Note! Flynn had a vision to provide a 'mantle of safety' for the people of the bush. He once said "If you start something worthwhile - nothing can stop it" and this simple truth is evidenced by the RFDS today, 92 years on. As we navigate through a global health pandemic, Flynn’s vision to deliver a mantle of safety for rural and remote Australians remains just as relevant. #OnThisDay
05.01.2022 Lest we forget.
04.01.2022 I still recall my first flight out of Charleville, pinching myself! That’s how RFDS (Queensland Section) Flight Nurse Emma Wex remembers what it was like to begin working for the Flying Doctor. Based at Charleville, she has the opportunity to be involved in two aspects of healthcare - primary health care and aeromedical retrieval.... At Charleville Base we facilitate a number of clinics across south-west Queensland. The clinics are scheduled weekly or fortnightly depending on the needs of the local population. The area that we cover during clinics extends west out to Birdsville, north to Stonehenge, south as Eulo, and many more towns in between. If you are a registered nurse and midwife, with at least five years recent critical care experience, and like the sound of working for the RFDS we currently have flight nurse positions available in Charleville and Townsville! 03.01.2022 "This one time, one of my patients offered to take me out mud crabbing. I got my Wellington boots on and we drove out and filled our buckets with beautiful crab and he even cooked it on the fire for me. That was special," says RFDS WA dentist Dr Steve Hill. A roving dentist in WA, Steve's patients are located in the remote communities of Warburton, Wiluna and across the Midwest and Kimberley region. After nearly six years in the job, Steve says he's used to seeing the same ...patients on visits and enjoys building rapport with his patients.
