13.01.2022 Spring is here and that can mean hayfever and asthma for many. Most people know pollen, dust mites and pet dander can trigger hay fever but they may not be aware that it can also exacerbate asthma symptoms and contribute to serious flare-ups. Pre-emptive steps for people at risk may include using a preventer puffer and/or nasal spray. Some simple steps that can be taken to reduce exposure to triggers in spring include;... Check the pollen forecast and be extra careful on high pollen days Use your preventer medications as prescribed and keep your asthma reliever with you Don’t mow grass yourself and stay inside when it is being mown. If you must mow, wear a mask or consider taking a non-drowsy antihistamine. On high pollen days, extra steps may include: Try to avoid going outdoors, especially on windy days or after thunderstorms. Keep windows closed when in your car and at home Don’t dry washing on an outside as pollen can end up on clothes. If you have allergies and you’re wheezing or coughing, it’s really important to visit your GP so you can work together on a treatment plan. Speak to your GP about how you can keep safe during spring and thunderstorm asthma season, which occurs from October to December in south-eastern Australia. 09.01.2022 Thunderstorm asthma can happen suddenly to people in spring or summer when there is a lot of pollen in the air and the weather is hot, dry, windy and stormy. Spring is a peak time for thunderstorm asthma in Victoria as the weather can cause pollen grains to burst into tiny pieces and the wind then blows them around us. When people breathe in these tiny pieces of pollen they can get deep inside the lungs and trigger an asthma attack. Spring weather can also lead to breathing p...roblems for people who get seasonal hay fever. People who wheeze and sneeze from pollens during spring are more likely to get thunderstorm asthma even if they haven't had asthma before. People more likely to get thunderstorm asthma Those who get asthma and seasonal hay fever Those with hay fever who have never had asthma Those with past asthma or unrecognised asthma Common symptoms of asthma Wheezing - a whistling sound coming from the chest while you are breathing Breathlessness A feeling of tightness in the chest A persistent cough Asthma symptoms can be different for different people. A person's asthma symptoms can also change - sometimes there are no symptoms, like when our asthma is well controlled by preventer medication or when allergy triggers aren't around. Common symptoms of seasonal hay fever Runny nose Itchy nose Sneezing Itchy, watery eyes What you can do to keep safe During spring and early summer, consider using a prescribed nasal spray. Stay up to date with pollen counts and weather forecasts during spring and early summer so you know if a storm is coming. There are some great apps and websites that can keep you up to date. Avoid being outdoors just before and during thunderstorms, especially in wind gusts before the rain. Just before and during storms with wind gusts, get inside a building or car with the windows shut. Consider seeing your health professional if you are struggling to control either hay fever and/or asthma, need to update a management plan or it has been a while since a health professional reviewed your condition. 07.01.2022 Asthma is very common. It is caused by narrowing of small air passages due to swelling and increased mucus, which makes it harder for air to get through causing wheezing, cough and difficulty breathing. Though the exact cause is unknown, asthma tends to run in families and is related to conditions like eczema, hay fever and allergy. Triggers can include cigarette smoke, pollens, cold exposure, viral infections, exercise and pets. It is important to avoid your triggers. Asthma... can be well controlled by the right medicine and almost all children can live normal lives and play all sports. Your health professional can discuss suitable medications with you, and show you how to administer them. It is important to have a written action plan and to know how to use it. Your child’s school or child care should be provided with the plan. Royal Park Medical doctors can help you and your child manage asthma better by developing an asthma management and action plan.
