05.01.2022 Look closely. Can you see the purple dot? Its a single atom.... This image by David Nadlinger from the University of Oxford reveals a positively-charged strontium atom held by electric fields emanating from metal electrodes about 2mm apart. It all sits within an ultra-high vacuum chamber. The atom absorbs a specific blue-violet coloured laser, and re-emits light particles quickly enough for a long exposure photograph to capture it, and for it to be visible to the naked eye. The image, Single Atom in an Ion Trap won this years annual Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council photography award.
