25.01.2022 I love reading from the minds of Autistics.

24.01.2022 I have worked with loris for years and can not recommend her knowledge and insight more highly. This time of different living could be a great opportunity to learn more about rpm and get practical advise for how to get your own program going!!! @lorisfarah #somarpm#rpmformelbourne#rpm Loris Farah

24.01.2022 A great opportunity!!!!

24.01.2022 Attached is the RPM activity Sarah Winnett and Kat did with Poppy and Amelia yesterday to learn about and celebrate Earth Day! https://docs.google.com//1v8EnSpic1y-QuZoT1ILr0J7iac/edit

23.01.2022 I have been spending a lot of time creating and building some lesson plans. I am trying to ensure I cover lots of ideas for creativity and craft, especially as our kids are at home. Let me know if you would be interested in some personalised lessons!!

22.01.2022 Did you know we now offer online sessions? It has been really enjoyable running online sessions with families over the past few months. For many parents,... this was the first time using RPM with their children; an experience which has been very gratifying and rewarding to share with them. What does an online session look like? Dont worry! The session and content is delivered as usual. Participants can then either interact with the screen or parents can facilitate eg. writing down and presenting a choice. You will be guided and supported every step of the way! What resources will you need? Just a pencil, paper and some kind of alphabet (you can print one out, draw your own or we could post one to you). Not sure your child will engage in online sessions? Many parents have had the same thought and then been pleasantly surprised! To put your mind at ease, we are happy to offer you a complimentary online session to give it a go. If online sessions arent for you, perhaps we can find other ways to assist you in reaching your goals such as sending you weekly lessons to try in your own time. This is an exciting opportunity to work with families outside of Sydney too! Perhaps youre new to RPM or perhaps youve been doing it a while and need some help with something in particular? If you live interstate or in another country, feel free to contact us and to see what days and times might be available to work together. Email [email protected] www.rpm-australia.com

19.01.2022 Starting to practice transition from someone holding the letter board for her too spelling on the letterboard on the table. Eventually and with practice Amelia may then move to a keyboard.

19.01.2022 For anyone with a spanish speaking background, this could be an amazing opportunity to learn about rpm from someone so experienced! (And a wonderful person!). Please share if you know anyone who may benefit from this!!

19.01.2022 I have seen for myself how RPM has supported the development of speech. At any age. As a mum who was told when my child was 4 by a dr ‘she will never speak’, this is an important reminder to not put limitations on my autistic child! She works on her speech and we have been hearing more words! (She’s especially loving practicing using her voice through listening to her favourite singer (Noah kahan) over and over).

18.01.2022 Finally settling into our new home our new rpm space! I will be offering lessons during the school holidays, (In Aspendale). Let me know if you are interested in booking some sessions. New students are so welcome! So please share if you know someone who might be interested!

15.01.2022 Patch has really been working hard on communicating. This is a story about choice and control, independence and the importance of teaching autistic children to... communicate, no matter how hard it is because we all have a desire to have our needs and wants met, be heard, make friends, tell stories, be creative, be loved, feel safe and fill our hearts by connecting with others. There are a lot of new people following this page so Ill fill you in a little bit about Patch before I tell one of the most inspiring education stories I have ever told. Patch is now 11 years old and when he was seven he cycled 5600 kms on a semi recumbent bicycle, across America, with Fiona and myself. He is learning to communicate by spelling words by pointing at letters on a stencil board. After he points to each letter I write them down to spell words, I then ask him more questions, he spells more words. He communicates with me, I communicate with him, we communicate with each other. I make communicating fun for him by teaching him to communicate by teaching a curriculum based at and above his age level. Patch is not a reliable speaker. When he was a lot younger he developed thousands of spoken words and dozens of long sentences that he loved to say out loud to Fiona (Patchs mum) and myself. By the time he was six years old Patch was no longer expressing most words out loud. Patchs motor differences make communicating incredibly hard for him and he finds it very exhausting and difficult to use the stencil board but its been his only reliable source of communication in years. His school is also working really hard with him to explore using other alternative and augmentative communication options. Some days he finds communicating with the stencil board harder than others and some days he makes so much progress. Today is one of those days. The story I am about to tell you is shared with Patchs permission and has a message hidden beneath the words he spells. My hope is that you deeply connect with this story and you go on to change the way you interact with and talk about autistic children and champion the highest of expectations for autistic people all over the world. Today was just another ordinary Sunday morning. Our family was getting ready to go for a bushwalk when Patch walked up to me and gave me a hug. I have recently determined his hugs are his way of telling me he has something to say. I immediately tell Patch to go and get his stencil board and sit down for a chat. We walk a few metres together, Patch grabs his stencil board and sits down. I ask, "What do you want to tell me Patch?" As Patch points at the stencil letter board I scribble down each letter on a piece of paper. Over the next 15 minutes Patch regulates his body and motor plans to move his finger, wrist, and arm to spell. Patch spells: " I am tired" I ask, " What do you want to do? Patch spells: " I want to stay at home". Now to fill you in here, I am so excited by Patchs response. He has never spelled or said these words before. I want to honour them but have a dilemma. I had organised for Patch to meet up with an older friend on the bushwalk, a 21 year old autistic man that really wanted to catch up with Patch. The words "what am I going to do" are racing through my head; I dont want to disappoint Patchs friend and I also dont want to disregard Patchs words. I regret my next decision but ultimately what happened wouldnt have occurred had I not said what I said next. I ask, "What about a compromise Patch? You come in the car with mum, Ill walk with our friend and you and mum go and get a hot chocolate?" Patch responds" NO" I say, " Do you want to stay home with mum?" Patch spells: " YES" I say: "Okay" and Patchs walks off. I notice he appears to be limping. We sit down again with the stencil board. I ask: " Have you got a sore hip, knee or foot?" Patch spells: "HIP" And then it struck me, Patch had fallen over on a bushwalk he did with a school friend yesterday. He was in pain. And as soon as he realised I knew he was in pain he felt instant relief, gave me another hug and smiled. We set up the couch for Patch to rest, put on a movie for him to watch, Fiona rubbed some lotion into his hip and I went bushwalking with my incredible autistic friend and his dad. None of that would have happened if it was not for the stencil board enabling the highest quality of communication. Tomorrow I participate in an educator focus group for the 2020 Review of the Disability Standards for Education 2005. These are the standards aimed at ensuring students with disability in Australia get access and participate in education on the same basis as students without disability. If you or someone you love has a disability you will know these standards need to change. Quality education for people with disability takes an exciting curriculum, it takes time, it takes patience, it takes trust and when the young person that you work with knows that you believe in them and never, ever give up, always presuming competence, you are halfway towards setting the standards. But just saying this stuff and writing it down in a manual that sits on the desk, gets filed away, or formatted into a pretty downloaded online report on the education departments website means absolutely nothing. Actions take bloody hard work and dedication and every autistic child and adult deserves the best. Tomorrow I will share what this means to my family, and so many more. (FYI - Patchs hip feels a lot better and he enjoyed singing (his other favourite communication method) along to The Greatest Showman on TV)
