14.01.2022 #AshmoleanAdvent Calendar Day 22 - Snow This is a small gouache painting by the Scottish artist and poet William Bell Scott (18111890). William and hi...s brother, David, both trained at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh and worked for their father, an engraver, before launching their own careers as painters. Scott moved to London in 1837 where he met members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists and became close friends with Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In 1844 Scott was appointed as principal of the government School of Design in Newcastle upon Tyne, where he added industrial subjects to his repertoire of landscapes and history painting. He was one of the first British artists to extensively depict the processes of the Industrial Revolution. Scott held the post in Newcastle for 20 years, but continued to teach in London until 1885. #Advent #AdventCalendar See more
