25.01.2022 The free RQAS Art Exhibition is now open for your enjoyment. Drop in to the Kern Arcade in East Street, Rockhampton and indulge you love of art. The RQAS members have been busy in the past months and would just love to show you what they have produced. The Exhibition and Sales are open from 9am each day through until Sunday 9th August. Social distancing is required so there is a limit to the number of people who can be at the Exhibition at any given time. However, if you pick you time your wait will hopefully be short and you will be able to view the Exhibition at your leisure. Today the wonderful team, who regularly hang the Exhibition works, were hard at work. Here is just a small taste of what is now hanging and awaiting your viewing. Please do come along and enjoy.

22.01.2022 The pencils were out and sharpened ready to go. The Tuesday Art Group under the watchful eye of June worked on the skills and techniques of using colour pencils. It's essential that a good drawing is done first then the gentle layering of colours to achieve a depth of colour. Blending with a medium adds another element. Great morning was had by all with some fabulous results.

21.01.2022 We all know the weekend is one of the best times to enjoy art. This weekend you can judge for yourself if the prize winners of the RQAS Rockhampton Branch Clouds Competition are as excellent as we believe they are. Clouds is not an easy subject, but you will be amazed at the quality of the entries and the art works of the outstanding prize winners. You can find the Exhibition in the Kern Arcade, East Street over the weekend. It is free and some of the artists will be there each day. The Clouds Competition was won by June Taylor, with second prize to Margaret Neumann and third prize to Heather Bull. These really are amazing works of art. Youve just got to find some time to have a look. The Exhibition runs until Sunday 9th August.

20.01.2022 Join the plein-air artists group, of the RQAS Rockhampton Branch, on a Tuesday at 9.30am at the Botanic Gardens. Plein-air is considered a traditional French approach which, simply put, is painting and drawing undertaken out of doors. Plein-air art is a way for the artist to be more able to artistically represent their response to the open air scene or subject in front of them. It is mostly associated with painting and drawing scenes while being located within the scene eg p...ainting a landscape or streetscape or that swooping magpie (if you are really fast!). The RQAS group meets at a designated location where they draw and paint whatever captures their interest in the environment. Beginners are welcome and there is skilled assistance provided by other members who will teach you the basics (and some advanced skills if you so require). If the weather is not great, then the group will meet at their Art Rooms on the 1st Floor of the Walter Reid Cultural Centre. This Tuesday (tomorrow), weather permitting, the plein-air group will meet at the Botanic Gardens lagoon area (where the friendly turtles, ducks, pelicans and geese are always excited to see you). Please arrive around 9.30am and bring your art equipment, a fold-up chair (optional), hat, sunscreen and water/snacks. If you cant make it tomorrow, but would like to join the group another time, the following plein-air sessions are planned: May 21 at Rigarisford Park (Elphinstone St) at the playgound at 9.30am July 23 at The Caves Pub on the verandah at 9.30am You will be most welcome and you will thoroughly enjoy the companionship and support of other developing and skilled artists. Any enquiries regarding the weekly plein-air group, please contact Lyn Howard on 0409059332 or email [email protected]

19.01.2022 What do you call Santas little helpers? Subordinate clauses. Rock on down to the RQAS Artists Christmas Shop in the Kern Arcade, East Street Mall tomorrow and Santas little artists will be delighted to assist you with your Christmas purchases. There is something for everyone and a price to suit every wallet. There is a little bit of fun to be had as well and some prizes to be won. The Christmas Shop is open from 9.30am each day through until 24th December, but dont delay as these wonderful works of art will quickly disappear.

19.01.2022 It's not too late to sign up for Jacky Chan workshops. To find out more email [email protected]

18.01.2022 RQAS Rockhampton Branch Covid-19 Plan. We are all looking forward to resuming our regular group art sessions. This wont happen until social distancing is no longer required and we are able to gather in groups again. We must stay safe and enjoy the time we have to indulge in our love of painting, drawing and creating art. At this stage (and please remember this may change), we hope to hold the first RQAS Rockhampton Branch monthly meeting on a Friday in June. The date will be... notified closer to the time. This meeting will consider future events including the Annual Exhibition, which is booked for late July/early August. Please assume the Annual Exhibition will go ahead at some point in time this year so do keep focussed on your wonderful works of art. The various groups who meet in the Club Rooms at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre will also remain in hibernation until the Health Authorities and the Rockhampton Regional Council (RRC) deem it is safe for us to return. Workshops planned for this year, including the Tricia Ruest workshop, have been rescheduled and deposits will be refunded once a monthly meeting can be held. We thank the RRC for rebating our lease payment on the Club Rooms. We are most appreciative of this initiative by the RRC. As a consequence of the RRCs assistance we have reduced the members fees to $20 for the 2020/2021 membership year. Payment of membership fees is due by 1st July, 2020. The Commonwealth Bank has waived the Merchant Fee for the time being, which is a further, appreciated financial support for the club. Please do contact the RQAS Rockhampton Branch Executive if you have any queries. Contact details are on the website and in Newsletters. We hope to see you all again in the not too distant future and in the meantime stay safe, well and continue to create inspiring art. See more

Everyday sketching heightens our senses and raises our awareness of detail, line, form and colour. We hope you enjoy viewing just a small sample of the works completed during the April Workshop under the talented guidance of Deb Mostert.

05.01.2022 The recent oil painting workshop presented by Philip Miles attracted interstate visitors to the CQ Region. It is not surprising Philip has such a following. His landscape paintings and his individual tuition to emerging and experienced artists is highly valued. The weekend workshop, offered by the RQAS Rockhampton Brach, was held on Sat 28th and Sunday 29th September in the RQAS Club Rooms in the Walter Reid Centre, Rockhampton. The limited palate, subject matter of clouds ...and a rocky shore seascape and the detailed practical information provided by Philip brought high praise from those who attended. If you are interested in reading further about Philips work he has an informative Facebook site: Philip Miles Artist. Photos of the weekend workshop have been provided by attendees. To reserve your place in this excellent workshop sponsored by the Royal Qld Art Society Rockhampton Branch Inc, please contact Lyn on 0409059332 or email [email protected]. Lyn will be able to provide additional details. This workshop will explore the u...se of sketchbooks as an everyday record of a life observed. With a simple kit of materials that you can carry with you, you can start a habit of drawing every day. Using pens and watercolour we will explore recording our daily lives from the ordinary to the unusual and prove to ourselves that we can get a creative habit going and keep ourselves observant and present. We will experiment with crosshatching, watercolour washes and fun drawing exercises. We will explore the use of sketchbooks as an incubator, a sentimental keepsake, a mind clearer, a list holder, an idea launcher, a best friend, a personal, intimate and honest playground. They are just for us, a safe space with no pressure to perform, a place to relax, a window into our thoughts and dreams and a visible record of a life observed, to be thumbed back through in times of creative drought. We will discover that we CAN draw and that any time is a good time to build our creative habits! Artist Bio - Deb Mostert Debs contemporary art practice is 25 years young and involves drawing, painting and lately, some small sculpture. Debs work has been built around the search for collected personal objects and curated public museum collections which can become metaphors for shifting memory, collection, migration and value. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Queensland College of Art and has had 16 solo shows and been involved in more than 60 group shows in both Regional and commercial galleries. She has won several awards and been a finalist in many National art prizes including the Bale Painting Prize, the Salon de Refuses, Jacaranda Drawing Prize, and Marie Ellis Prize for Drawing. Deb has over 16 years teaching experience with workshops and artist in residencies. Deb recently had her sketches projected onto the William Jolly Bridge by the Brisbane City Council.

04.01.2022 Support for artists in rural, remote and isolated areas in Queensland. The Rockhampton Branch of the Royal Queensland Art Society offers membership of the Society for people who live outside a 100-km radius of Rockhampton and who do not have easy access to other art organisations. Country membership is at a reduced rate compared with ordinary membership (currently $15 v. $40), as we understand that it is likely to be difficult for country members to regularly attend classes... and workshops, which are held at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre (WRCC) in Rockhampton. If, however, country members are able to attend, then they will be eligible for the same reduced cost for classes and workshops as ordinary members. Country members can exhibit and sell artworks through the Annual Exhibition and Sales and any other sales organised by the club, and which are staged in Rockhampton. Country members will receive the monthly newsletter (by e-mail) so that they can be kept up-to-date on activities and they can attend the monthly meetings (held in the WRCC on the 2nd Friday of each month, except December and January) and the AGM (held in August) if it is convenient for them to do so. It may also be possible for country members to obtain feedback and critiques of their artworks from other members of the club, if they so wish. For more information about the RQAS Rockhampton Branch, please visit our website (http://www.rqasrockhampton.com) or contact the Secretary on [email protected] See more

I had previously been a missionary in Japan for fifteen years and prior to that had worked in libraries and then in kitchens. My love for painting is not new, even if working as an artist is a new experience. I grew up drawing and painting and considered art as a career in my younger years. Nonetheless, life took me in other directions and I did very little painting for 25 years or so. The last several years, therefore have been a process of playing catch up. The medium I work in is oil paint, but my knowledge of the technical side of oil painting was very limited when I started up again, so the last few years have been devoted to expanding my technical knowledge and developing skills in a wide variety of techniques. I have also tried to push my subject matter beyond straightforward landscape painting...."
