25.01.2022 Happy birthday for yesterday courtesy of Blue Belt Mafia A day like today in 1993, Rorion Gracie and Art Davie decided to bring The Gracie Challenge to the public and show the world the power of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by creating UFC1. Before UFC1, hardly anyone knew what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was. Most people's ideas of effective martial arts were Boxing, Karate, and Kung Fu. Mostly because that's what looked great for Hollywood. But for many years, The Gracie family had bee...n issuing "The Gracie Challenge" all over Brazil. The Gracie Challenge was a garage bare-knuckled no holds barred fight where a member of the Gracie family would use mostly Jiu-Jitsu to dominate opponents from all sorts of martial arts backgrounds. They effectively dominated judokas, boxers, karatekas, aikidokas, "kung-fuers"? Is that a word? lol, and of course many street fighters who thought being a brawler was enough. This was great and all but it was still underground. Until the first televised event was made, UFC1. A 16-man tournament style fighting championship very different to what the UFC is today. Most, if not all fighters were mono-styled, unlike today where most MMA fighters in UFC are versed in several martial arts. But the point was to show the world what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can do against Kickboxers, Muay Thai, Wrestlers, Sumo even? Royce Gracie was intentionally picked by the Gracie family to represent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Royce was the smallest of the brothers (170lbs) and if their smallest would come out the victor, there couldn't be a higher voice than that. Royce Gracie went on to submit all of his opponents with Jiu-Jitsu alone including the highly decorated wrestler and feared Ken Shamrock. Royce's striking was just about useless, but he didn't need it. Royce Gracie went on to do the same on UFC2 and half of UFC3 where he was too battered to continue and had to concede in the semifinals. Royce Gracie brought Jiu-Jitsu to the light and turned many heads. Since then, many people realized that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was a force to be reckoned with and it became the pinnacle of ground fighting. So important to the fabric of a fighter that any fighter without some degree of competency in Jiu-Jitsu would not be expected to get too far in MMA. And for self-defense, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has all the correct tools to beat the odds. I have been doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for a very long time, but I also have done other martial arts: Judo, Boxing, Tae-Kwon-Do, Hapkido, and some Muay Thai and I have absolute trust in this art of ours

25.01.2022 Saturday morning 9am, stretching and mobility with Jessi. Focus will be on shoulder mobility, $10, all welcome

25.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 26 Rob (the semi naked one in the pic) came to us with a standup background in Muay Thai. He took to BJJ like a duck to water. He’s a very dynamic grappler with a great combination of speed and strength. It’s great seeing him compete with his brother Ben Miller. Like ever brotherly relationship, no one wants to lose He has a future in MMA too. Unfortunately he lost his first fight, the guy he went against had been in the cage twice b...efore and had the experience, but Rob will be back bigger and better Name - Robert Miller Favourite class - BJJ mega roll How long have you been training - 23 months BJJ about 9 off with neck injury and covid Why do you train - martial arts has always been my passion Favourite thing about the gym - trying to rip my brother's head off and making him squeal like a 2 year old girl

24.01.2022 Hey all, in order for us to get back into it tomorrow night we’re recalling all of the gear that’s on loan. We’ll be open tonight from 5-6.30pm. If you can’t make it in during these times please let us know ASAP

23.01.2022 Great night on the mats tonight! The heat definitely didn’t stop this bunch #milduramartialarts

21.01.2022 Organising tomorrow’s fun tonight

21.01.2022 This is what Augustas does when he’s in the gym alone

21.01.2022 Kids in the Advanced Karate/MMA finally getting back into some contact training, bit rusty as it’s been so long but massive smiles all round

20.01.2022 PARENTS!!! Some feedback please The reason the Intermediate Kids class starts at 5 is because we used to have a juniors class from 4.30. We shut that down yeeeeears ago (about 9 and in the old gym) but kept the timetable as it was. Sooooo........... Two of the changes we are looking at making are, Bringing the Intermediate Kids class, currently 5-6pm (which is really 5.10-5.50 of actual class/work time) to the 4.30-5.10pm time slot. This will be actual work time so the kids will need to be in the dojo by 4.25pm. The Advanced Kids class from 6-7pm (which again is 40 minutes of work time, 6.10-6.50) brought to the 5.20-6pm time slot. This again is work time. By doing this we will free up 40 minutes of dead space from 5-7pm, and with the other couple of adjustments I’m looking at in the adults classes that night, kids in the advanced class will be able to do BJJ on Monday/Wednesday nights if they please. Please tag parents so they are aware, let me know via below or inbox please, Sophie

20.01.2022 Hi friends! Join Jessi at 9am tomorrow for flex and mobility @milduramartialarts ! $10 no booking required! See you there

20.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 29 I met Dylan a while back when I was invited to lend a hand at a grading at a BJJ club in Melbourne. I was asked to squish him for his last couple of rounds, this was an old style school with an old style mindset, my favourite combination . So after getting his purple that day he made contact and said work had him coming to Mildura. Tough grappler with great technique, it’s great to have other styles of BJJ come up against ours. He’s... opened the guys eyes up to the leg lock game and I’m very thankful for that as it’s not really my thing Name - Dylan vertigan Favourite class - Fri night mega roll. Or any time were rolling really. How long have you been training - 8 years. Most of that time in melbourne. Why do you train - keep fit and the adaptable skillsets it gives you. Plus the ability to apply the mindset and personal development skills you learn through martial arts to everyday life Favourite thing about the gym - the personalities and characters that exist. Plus the social life.

19.01.2022 Angles and arm bars tonight great to see returning members and heaps of new faces

19.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 28 Well, some would say my right hand man. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Joe is loyalty. You won’t find a more loyal person, FACT!! His moral compass faces due North and will not falter. He has been with me from the start when we had some mats I bought from Bunnings and we trained in the kids crèche at a local gym that has since closed. Always there to lend a hand, an ear, anything. I not only trained him up to be a... BJJ instructor, but a Police OSTT instructor also, and I’ve had to give him a few arse tearings along the way. But nothing can break his stride, an absolute asset to the gym. You want to be anything in life peeps, be like Joe. Name - Joe Joesiuppe Mammone Favourite class - Friday night mega roll is now my favourite class. How long have you been training - 20 years of training! Favourite thing about Gym - Family friendly environment, awesome bunch of people that train with different levels of experience! Love the fact that all my family trains there! Treated like family from Mick, Sophie and kids!

19.01.2022 If anyone if feeling a little unmotivated, I have a tonne of lion and wolf memes to get you going. No more Hippo memes, let’s do this !!

16.01.2022 Yes.....it takes a little while.... but like absolutely ANYTHING in life, you’ll get the results you want by being consistent In the case of BJJ, you can’t fake skill Tonight, BJJ 5.30-6.20 followed by Cardio Kickboxing 6.35-7.30, see you then

15.01.2022 5.30 tonight, carpark circuit for an hour, but you don’t have to work the entire time !!! Pace yourself, treat it like a marathon not a sprint

14.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 33 Brodie, our most ridiculously best looking person on the mat has been with us a while now. Being a paramedic, it has been convenient at times with the occasional injury we get. He’s placed in the Australian Kudo titles, and in BJJ as well where he excels. Has a beautiful little family with Starr and is an absolute pleasure to have on the mat as part of my leadership group Name - Brodie Thomas... Favourite class - Mega Roll How long have you been training - Almost 7 years. Why do you train - I train for fitness, to build resilience, to be part of a community and because I enjoy training martial arts. Favourite thing about the gym - My favourite thing is the people and community we have at Mildura Martial Arts. Training here builds confidence but also teaches humility. The world class facilities we have access to in a regional town are an added bonus.

13.01.2022 Hey all, following the government’s announcement on Sunday, it looks like we won’t be opening as planned in a week. We appreciate everyone’s support during this most trying of times, it really does mean the world to us. We also appreciate and understand that everyone’s circumstances are different, we all have bills to pay. If anyone would like to cancel their direct debit membership please contact me on 0438508443 and I will arrange a cancellation form to be emailed to you. Regards, Sophie.

13.01.2022 Hey all, hope everyone had a great New Years We’re back to the grind Monday the 4th. The holidays timetable will be in effect until the Victorian school term starts. We had a huge response for the changes to training times on Monday and Wednesday with earlier classes. We’re going to put the feelers out for some changes to Tuesday and Thursday soon

12.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 27 Another family unit, the Snell’s they’ve been with us for a while now and all get right into their training. Andrew was the last to join the club and got into the BJJ. I think back to watching his struggle in those initial stages, then once he got over the hump he was taking it in his stride. Too many people that can’t get over that hump just stop training and have no idea what their potential is Noah is a very dynamic little f...ighter for his size training in both MMA and BJJ. The girls can’t be swayed either way, one is BJJ, one is MMA through and through Names - Andrew, Hannah, Esther and Noah Snell. Favourite class - BJJ for the majority (but Hannah's is Karate) How long have you been training - Naoh & Hannah 2.5 years Andrew and Esther nearly 1 year Why do you train - To keep my family healthy and also how to Defender ourselves. Favourite thing about the gym - When we finally learn a move and use it properly lol

12.01.2022 Intermediate (5-8/9 years old) and Advanced (8/9-15 years old) Kids Karate/MMA kicks off again on the 1st of February. New timetable will come into effect on this date. Intermediate Kids 4.30 - 5.10 PM Advanced Kids 5.20 - 6 PM... Register your interest via [email protected] or inbox the Mildura Martial Arts page

11.01.2022 To keep things super simple. You can start ANYTIME after 5.30pm. Speak to Sophie before starting. Sign in and sanitise. We finish when we finish. Latest is 6.45ish. ... Any questions re exercises, ASK Suitable for about 12 years and up. PACE YOURSELF. It’s not a race. REST when you need to. Then get back into it

11.01.2022 Great job everyone that trained last night, great turn out, awesome to see you all again. The sanitise and sign in process worked perfectly, great to see everyone working as one. See you Thursday at 5.30

10.01.2022 We’re back baby !! Open mat tonight from 6.30-8pm. For those that don’t know, an open mat is self paced training. Pretty much grab someone to train with or a bag to do your own thing. Open to anyone that is a member of the gym, kids, kickboxers, grapplers, fighters, everyone. Gi or No Gi, up to you Monday and Wednesdays for the rest of January

10.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 30 You shouldn’t have favourites, but Regan is quite literally my favourite person on the planet. Well definitely top two.....if you include Pola. Just after she was born via cesarean and I’d cut the cord, she was wrapped up and given to me. I just just stared. Meanwhile Sophie was still strapped to the table, I’d completely forgotten about her Suddenly she opened her right eye and looked at me. I said to Sophie, She just opened her ...eye I was so freakin excited. Sophie came back with She’s not a bloody puppy Mick. No one told me about this!!! Anyhoo, I was completely besotted and love the young lady she has developed into. Couldn’t be prouder of her, she continues to amaze me every single day (unlike the boy one and the other small long haired annoying girl one) This may sound a bit cliche, but she has quite literally grown up on the mat, and as such was heavily influenced by some of our amazing friends we’ve made at Mildura Martial Arts. Classic case of a village raising a warrior! Name- Regan Moloney or Reggie B Favourite Class- Karate or BJJ How long have you been training- on and off for about 14 years but consistently for almost 5 years. Why do you train- so one day dad taps from an awesome choke I put on nah I’m kidding... because it’s so much fun and I love learning new techniques and hanging out with my friends. Favourite thing about the gym- it’s my second home, I’ve grown up there and everyone is like family to me. It’s very weird not being at the dojo every night of the week, can’t wait to get back to it.

10.01.2022 Looks like good news on the horizon, going to get to hang with my besties again

09.01.2022 Don’t let the heat talk you out of training tonight!! 5.30 - BJJ comp rounds (just a couple) then some positional sparring. 6.35 - Cardio kickboxers, I’m busting out the TRX....yeah...you heard me....how you like me nowwwww!

07.01.2022 Open mat training today at the dojo. First one is from 11.30am-1pm, Second one is from 6.30-8pm... Get down there and punch something or have a roll, get rid of some of those Christmas calories or get in credit for your New Years ones

06.01.2022 Had a legit question re tonight’s class. What if it rains....... You get wet. Now that’s out of the way, you know the routine, 5.30 start, 6.30 gear away, hand sanitiser, temp check, sign in, PACE YOURSELF!!!... Deep down your health doesn’t care about rain, it just wants to thriiiiiiive !!!!!

06.01.2022 Last nights two BJJ classes and cardio Kickboxing Tonight is for the grapplers, 5-6.30, see you then

06.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 33 EVERYONE knows Nic. She’s the one that pretty much everyone first meets when they come in and the one that gets your gear and gets you going on the mat. She’s been a massive help to us in so many ways over the years and is an absolute asset to the gym at the counter. She has a fair old crack at everything, and has competed in Kudo a number of times Name - Nicole Andriotis... Favourite class - I love all the classes but MMA is my favourite How long have you been training - 11 Years Why do you train -Training lets me release any negativity and frustration that I might have. Favourite thing about the gym - I love the gym as we are all one massive Family. Everyone helps and supports one another. With a great variety of classes, it helped me to get through a difficult time in my life.

05.01.2022 Bit of an update on everything for everyone. We’re back in the car park on Tuesday and Thursday this coming week for a 5.30pm start, for fitness circuits. We’ll finish when you’re finished, or when the sun is well and truly set. I’ll do a post on Monday night explaining the format for this. In line with this great news, we’re taking on new members again for most of our classes. We’re not back inside yet, but we expect to be in about two weeks. Unfortunately we’re not taking on any members for BJJ at the moment. It’s funny to think there was a time many years ago when we were going to quit teaching BJJ due to lack of numbers, now we’re full. We’re actually over full and have a waiting list with seven people on it already. Let me know if you want to get into BJJ and I’ll put you on the list. See you all soon, Sophie

05.01.2022 Want to make your shoulders Kimura/Americana proof!!! This is one of the shoulder stretches from this morning’s flexibility and mobility session with Jessi this morning Give it a crack at home, but go slowly!

05.01.2022 Hey all, we’re back in the carpark next Tuesday night. I went out and got some more gear, bought local, looking after the people that look after us With that in mind, going to start recalling all the loan gear for drop off this Monday at 5pm. We’ll do a few personal pm’s too Stay tuned as there will be training ONLY on Tuesday and Thursdays. There will be two sessions each time. I have it on good authority we may be back inside in as little as three weeks

04.01.2022 I remember once getting choked out at BJJ by Johnny G. I was staring at the ceiling and he said are you okay. Not realising I had just been out, and a little confused by his question, I said yes and we kept rolling. Then it all came back to me, I remembered my loud snores though This guy just picked up where he left off, like back to work

04.01.2022 Crazy times people, calls for crazy measures !! We’re going to start car park training next week, so going to need all the loan gear back. I’ll advise over the weekend re this We’re going to nut out some finer details, but at this stage we’re proposing similar to last time, but with two distinct times to try cater for everyone. Details will come out this weekend, but please, tag your buddies so everyone is aware of what is going on... Thanks again to those that continue to support your gym, it’s there because you are

04.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 31 Discipline trumps motivation. I’ve said that a million times. When you don’t feel like training because you’re not motivated, rely on discipline. I’ve known Daniel San for about 15 years when he first started training as a teenager. A disciplined and extremely hard worker, forward thinker and all round great bloke. He’s worked his way to the top with his business through hard work and determination. I often bounce ideas off of him in... regard to the dojo and generally follow up with his thoughts. He’s my outside of the dojo training partner when it comes to chucking some weights around and helps even me stay disciplined when I start to waiver Name - Daniel Englefield Favourite class - Friday Mega Roll How long have you been training - 6 months Why do you train - For mobility, getting my boots on is much easier.. Favourite thing about the gym - The culture, it doesn't matter if you're a beginner or a black belt, all are welcome...

04.01.2022 Hooomans of Mildura Martial Arts part 32 Ronin, aka Robin, Rosey, Roney, Roney Pony, Bonin, Groanin Ronin, Rasta Bobalewski, Roney Baloney....the list goes on. I was infatuated with the name Ronin before he was born. If Regan was a boy, she would have been named Ronin !! He’s a born entertainer, emotionally has a heart of pure gold and although I’d like to think butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth, I’m not that silly. When he does something wrong, I can see myself in him ...doing the same thing when I was young. He’s addicted to his computer, his friends, his mum and happiness Name - Ronin Moloney Favourite class - Advanced Kids MMA How long have you been training - 8 years Why do you train - for self defence and because it’s fun. Favourite thing about the dojo - my friends and MMA/Karate

03.01.2022 Tonight, BJJ 5.30-6.20 followed by Cardio Kickboxing 6.35-7.30. New members always welcome

02.01.2022 Warm weather coming, drink plenty during the day and bring a bottle to the gym. We’re Gi all night so you’ll sweat about a kilo!!

01.01.2022 One more week of the holiday timetable then we’re back full swing from February 1st with our new timetable! Open mat tonight at 6:30-8pm - And just a quick reminder that there’s no training tomorrow due to the Australia Day public holiday
