24.01.2022 #OTD Arthur ‘Bushy’ Pembroke, MC On the 6th of October 1953, then Lieutenant Arthur ‘Bushy’ Pembroke led a platoon in one of the most famous battles of the K...orean War during the Battle of Maryang San. At the time, Bushy was 9 platoon’s commander with C Company, 3RAR. On the 6th of October 1953, Bushy’s platoon was responsible for capturing the high point codenamed Sierra, a woody knoll halfway between the summit of Hill 317 and another area called The Hinge. His platoon then held it for 48 hours against multiple vicious counter attacks and heavy artillery bombardments by the attacking Chinese forces. For his leadership of the platoon and personal bravery during the battle, Bushy was awarded the Military Cross. He would rise through to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring from active service in 1978. 24.01.2022 #OTD The Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels On the 14th of October at 4am, Sapper Bert Beros wrote a poem paying tribute to the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels whilst serving on the Kokod...a Track. The poem, below, commemorates the native Papuans who served as porters and stretcher bearers during the fighting along the Kokoda Track in WWII. As a result of this poem, and a photo taken by war photographer George Silk of blinded Australian Private George Whittington being led to a field hospital near Buna by carrier Raphael Oimbari (below), the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels would be immortalised in Australian Military History as symbols of compassion and cheerfulness in the face of adversity. Beros’ poem is enclosed in full below: Many a mother in Australia, When the busy day is done, Sends a prayer to the Almighty For the keeping of her son, Asking that an Angel guide him And bring him safely back Now we see those prayers are answered On the Owen Stanley track, For they haven’t any halos, Only holes slashed in the ears, And with faces worked by tattoos, With scratch pins in their hair, Bringing back the wounded, Just as steady as a hearse, Using leaves to keep the rain off And as gentle as a nurse. Slow and careful in bad places, On the awful mountain track, And the look upon their faces, Makes us think that Christ was black. Not a move to hurt the carried, As they treat him like a Saint, It’s a picture worth recording, That an Artist’s yet to paint. Many a lad will see his Mother, And the Husbands, Weans and Wives, Just because the Fuzzy Wuzzy Carried them to save their lives. From mortar or machine gun fire, Or a chance surprise attack, To safety and the care of Doctors, At the bottom of the track. May the Mothers in Australia, When they offer up a prayer, Mention those impromptu Angels, With the Fuzzy Wuzzy hair. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 21.01.2022 #OTD Three Australians killed in US rocket accident Today we pause to remember the three Australian soldiers who were killed in Vietnam when a rocket explode...d among them during an American firepower demonstration on the 28th of September 1967. The three men were 2782440 Lance Corporal Peter McDuff (20), 471827 Private Dennis Nelson (21), and 43573 Private Stanley Radomi (22). All three men were serving with Delta Company, 2RAR on their deaths. The men were observing a firepower demonstration conducted by the US army on the 28th of September. The rocket was fired from a US Army helicopter and veered left, narrowly missing Major General McDonald (acting Australian Adjutant), before striking the group of soldiers. Ten other Australians were also injured in the incident. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 15.01.2022 #OTD Battle of St Quentin Canal On the 29th of September 1918, Australian, British and American forces launched an attack against the German Hindenburg Line ...during the pivotal Battle of St Quentin Canal. The objective was to break through the sector of the same name. the assault achieved its objectives, resulting in the first full breach of the Hindenburg Line. On 29 September 1918, the strongly defended Hindenburg Line was attacked on a six-kilometre wide land bridge between Bellicourt and Vendhuille where the St Quentin Canal ran underground through a tunnel. After nearly two months of continuous action Australian units were numerically weak with the average battalion having only 300 men available for action. The Australians were reinforced by keen but inexperienced American troops whose unit strength was three times that of the exhausted Australians. The inexperience of the Americans was telling. An operation launched to secure the start line on 27 September 1918 was unsuccessful due to their failure to properly clear dugouts and trenches. The same mistakes were repeated by the 27th Division when the actual attack was launched two days later. The 3rd Australian Division, trying to advance to its own start line, became embroiled in the fight for the Americans' first objective. With all of the tanks destroyed or disabled, and the uncertain position of the forward troops preventing the use of artillery, the battle degenerated into a struggle for individual strong points, fought with bombs, bayonets and Lewis guns, that lasted for another three days. After three days of hard fighting, with Lewis guns and grenades, the Australians captured the first two German lines which had been the American objectives. By 2 October a gap of approximately 17 kilometres had been opened in the Hindenburg Line. The operation had cost the 3rd and 5th Australian Divisions 2,577 casualties.
