25.01.2022 Congratulations again to RSL Wanneroo Sub-branch on their new clubrooms and exciting plans for the future! It was a privilege to share the news in Parliament last week and pay tribute to the great work its members are doing for our community.

24.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE Friday, 27 March 2020 WESTERN AUSTRALIA VETERANS WELLBEING CENTRE ON TRACK Veterans and their families in Western Australia are a step closer to easier access to services and support with the Veterans Wellbeing Centre based at ANZAC House Veteran Central in Perth today receiving the Commonwealth Governments $5 million commitment to finish the project. Minister for Veterans Affairs Darren Chester said the Perth Veterans Wellbeing Centre, which is being led b...y the Returned and Services League of Australia WA Branch incorporated (RSLWA), will provide a one-stop shop for veterans and their families to access assistance from government, health services, ex-service organisations (ESOs), other veteran services providers and community groups. Veterans and their families will be able to access services and programs in a friendly, welcoming environment where their unique experiences are understood and supported, and their military service is respected, Mr Chester said. It is important we all work together to continue to improve the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families, and to provide individualised services based on local veterans needs. I commend and congratulate RSL WA for their dedication and commitment to the serving and ex serving community in Western Australia and I look forward to seeing the Wellbeing Centre opened later this year. RSLWA State President, Peter Aspinall AM, welcomed the approval of the Morrison Governments $5 million contribution to ensure the completion of construction of the ground-breaking RSLWA Veteran Central facility in Perth. Mr Aspinall said the strong ongoing support of the Commonwealth is much appreciated and will allow the project to continue on time and on budget with the opening of the seven-storey building to take place before Christmas. This facility will be an innovative one-stop shop for West Australian veterans and their families, enabling the delivery of a wide range of services in collaboration with other ESOs and private and government veteran service providers, Mr Aspinall said. Services include medical and allied health services, mental health support, employment guidance and placement and much more. This generous grant from the Federal Government is very timely and paves the way for better services that veterans need and deserve. The Government committed $30 million at the election to develop a network of six Veteran Wellbeing Centres across Australia in partnership with ESOs and state and territory governments. The Veteran Wellbeing Centres are part of the Governments commitment to putting veterans and their families first and complements the more than $4.3 billion a year dedicated to support veteran health. 24.01.2022 VP RSL Wanneroo Peter Epps laid a wreath today at the Wanneroo War Memorial.

23.01.2022 Dear Members of RSL Sub-branch Wanneroo, Please find attached an invitation inviting your members to join the RSL Joondalup City Sub-branch for an event to acknowledge RUOK Day and the Blue Poppy Project. I apologise that the event is on this coming Thursday and I am only just sending the invitation now.... This morning event will share information about the Battlefield Blue Poppy and draw to a close a small project the RSLWA Joondalup Subbranch has been involved in over the past few months. This came about through a small grant funding round applied for through Neami National. This was to support mental health and well being through the COVID-19 situation. The event this week will provide an opportunity for people to come together to chat with others and share further information about the Blue Poppy Care pack they received as part of the project. Part of the intent of the event is to raise awareness of the significance of the Battlefield Blue Poppy and discuss how we can continue to share this message and start the conversation with others. Below I have provided some links if you wish to find out further information about the Battlefield Blue Poppy and the poppy tributes websites. As the webpages will show, these Blue Poppies have been designed by Ron Davis who is based in Victoria. https://www.abc.net.au//202/blue-poppies-for-ptsd/12170296 http://www.poppytributes.com.au/ To date we feel that there isnt a lot of knowledge around the blue poppies in WA, we feel once word gets out and the significance then the possibilities are unlimited. Please dont hesitate to make contact if you would like further information. Kind regards Andrea Folkard Blue Poppy Project 0419 044 232

22.01.2022 FYI Just letting veterans know that while Ancestry does have the odd weekend where Military Records are free to search, National Archives are always free. Click on this link below and then name search and fill in the details including the category of records, which asks for the conflict that you are trying to search. All WW1 Australian records are free and approx. 1/3 WW2, the rest of WW2 are being digitised now and they state that they will all be available by mid 2021, but this will depend on the Covid 19. https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au//SearchSc/BasicSearch.aspx

21.01.2022 COVID-19 Federal and State governments have put control measures in place which limit our accepted freedoms ... to move, to congregate, to travel. However, there are no limits on communication and we encourage all members to keep in touch. This is vitally important in respect of your own welfare. If you need help in any way, or hear of any other member who needs help, please contact your committee, either through the Secretary or on this website.

21.01.2022 Project Lizzy is being undertaken by members of the RSL Wanneroo Sub Branch. Lizzy will be housed in a generously donated shed/workshop in Mariginiup. The team would appreciate any additional help to get her back on the road in all her former glory. If you are an ex-service person and are able to spare some time, please contact Pete on 0408 947 293

18.01.2022 Good morning Here is your diary note for The Listening Post broadcasting 6-8pm next Monday 18 May Radio and Internet Tune in to Capital Radio 101.7 FM and Capital Digital or www.capitalcommunityradio.com Time/Date | 1800-2000 hours (6-8pm) on Monday 18 May 2020.... Presenter Tony Howes will take a penetrating look at the tragedy that was Sandakan and Rimau, interviewing Bob Coventry, whose Army career began at age 15 and took him on a life-long military journey, which included service in Vietnam. Together, they will talk about the history of that tragic time for so many Australian and British servicemen. The Sandakan Death Marches were a series of forced marches in Borneo from Sandakan to Ranau, which resulted in the deaths of 2,434 Allied prisoners of war held captive by the Empire of Japan during the Pacific campaign of World War II in the Sandakan POW Camp. By the end of the war, of all the prisoners who had been incarcerated at Sandakan and Ranau, only six Australians survived, all of whom had escaped. It is widely considered to be the single worst atrocity suffered by Australian Servicemen during the Second World War Our guest, Bob Coventry, who has visited Sandakan and the Track, now etched into the Australian story of the Second World War, speaks of the lone six who survived, and of the proud memorials allowing us to remember them and their comrades. In tribute, you will hear the Australian Army Band Perth, directed by Captain Tom Martin, play Heroes of Rimau, the march composed by Pipe Major Sandy Forbes. Operation Rimau was an attack on Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbour, carried out by Allied commandos in Z Special Unit during World War II, using Australian-built folding kayaks. Guest artist on The Listening Post Bandstand is the Military Band of the Gordon Highlanders. The Listening Post is Perth's only radio program made especially for Defence Force personnel, past and present, their families and friends, broadcasting each Monday from 6-8pm, unless future developments with health regulations dictate otherwise. So, get up close to your radio (social distancing not needed), and settle back with a cuppa in your favourite chair; or perhaps plug in your mobile phone earbuds and take the dog for a long walk; or relax by your pond or pool with a loved one, or just lie back with your eyes closed, remembering the times when radio and imagination were the television of the mind. 17.01.2022 Another School Visits Us Wanneroo RSL Sub-branch were recently visited by students and teachers from Wanneroo Primary School. Students viewed the exhibits on display, some of which they were able to handle, completed a questionnaire regarding the many items on show, and were treated to a light morning tea. ‘A real pleasure to have them with us and to see their interest in what we do and what we have’ said Vice-President Peter Epps. ‘We hope to be able to host many more similar visits’. We would have liked to have included photos, but privacy protocols prevailed.

14.01.2022 Hi to everyone. A message from RSLWA below: RSLWA is encouraging all Aussies to get creative in a show of mateship this ANZAC Day by standing in quiet contemplation at the end of their driveways, or on their balconies, at 6am on April 25. RSLWA will lead this unique tribute to our fallen servicemen and women and those who have or still serve today.... The dawn commemorations will take place in the wake of the first cancellation of our ANZAC Day services since WWII, due to the COVID-19 crisis. We invite the entire community of Western Australia to get behind us by: Watching out for our moving community service announcements on TV and social media in coming weeks with participation by some of WAs most inspiring Veterans, WA Governor Kim Beazley and State Premier the Hon. Mark McGowan. Having children create craft or draw pictures about ANZAC Day and post on the RSLWA Facebook page and place in their home windows. Sharing our mateship-themed Veteran video profiles and articles on social media. Posting ANZAC Day tributes and photos to RSLWAs Facebook and Instagram pages, including the #rslwamateship and #DrivewayDawnService hashtag on all social posts. Donating to our annual ANZAC Appeal with funds going toward the health, wellbeing and advocacy of our valued Veterans at rslwa.org.au/donate. And on ANZAC Day, by: Lighting a candle and joining our ANZAC Day driveway Dawn Service at 5.55am on April 25. Tuning in to ABC Radio and commercial radio stations for the dawn commemoration that will include The Ode, The Last Post and one-minutes #DrivewayDawnService (Capital Community Radio on 101.7 FM and online are presenting a commemorative one-hour radio program commencing at 1000) Firing up a family barbecue or a traditional gunfire breakfast of bacon, eggs and sausages plus a mug of (rum-spiked) tea or coffee to toast the fallen. Tuning into a special ANZAC Day commemorative broadcast on TV (more details to come). With the pandemic causing all major events across the world to be cancelled, RSLWA State President, Peter Aspinall, said such a display of respect and solidarity would send a powerful message of support to our Veterans, their families and the entire Defence community. RSLWA would like to acknowledge those thousands of West Australians who have rallied on our social media pages to stand up and celebrate mateship on ANZAC Day in this unprecedented time. Mr Aspinall said. To all our supporters in this time of need, RSLWA and our Veteran community salute you all. RSLWA Chief Executive Officer, John McCourt, said mateship was one of the overriding qualities evoked by the ANZAC spirit. Mateship and the ANZAC spirit are as Australian as billy tea, said Mr McCourt. It will certainly be humbling for the nation to rally together with us at a time when we all need to stand for ourselves and each other on such a special day.

14.01.2022 Members of the Returned Service League (RSL), THESE 2020 COMMEMORATIVE COINS ARE A MEMORABLE TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO SERVED This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. To commemorate this important milestone, as well as Anzac Day 2020, the Royal Australian Mint has released two limited-edition collectible coins, as well as a new circulating $2 coin.... This year, Australians will observe Anzac Day without many of its traditional ceremonies. While we deal with the challenges of COVID-19, we should reflect on the sacrifices made by generations before us. The beautiful $2 collectible and circulating coin features the dove of peace and colours representing the three Australian forces that served from 1939 to 1945. The $5 Silver Proof Coin displays a woman releasing doves, representing peace, and origami cranes: a reference to the Children's Peace Monument in Hiroshima, Japan. These coin designs represent the triumph of peace over war, and solemnly commemorates those who fell during the Second World War. These coins can be purchased from the Royal Australian Mints eShop or by calling the Mints Sales Team on 1300 652 020. The 2020 $2 C Mintmark Coloured Uncirculated coin is available for $15 and the 2020 $5 Fine Silver Proof Coin for $102.50.

10.01.2022 Wanneroo RSL Sub Branch Restoration Project Members of the Wanneroo Returned Services League (RSL) are restoring an ex-Australian Army 3- tonne International truck, affectionately known as Lizzie. The Sub-Branch has been granted limited funding from the national body to enable Project Lizzie to get underway, and will also draw on members funds. As can be seen from the accompanying photo, Lizzie has had a tough life, both in service and in private ownership, but when ...restored to her former glory she will take her rightful place in sub Branch activities. A member has generously made available a covered workshop and a full range of workshop equipment, and the restoration is being overseen by two fully qualified ex-Army mechanics. We are seeking sponsorship and support from local suppliers, not so much in mechanical parts, but in all other aspects of the restoration, such as paint and painting, upholstery, tyres, auto-electrical, etc. All such support will be acknowledged via sponsor/supporter details displayed on the vehicle. To offer appropriate sponsorship/support to the project, or to discuss the possibility of same, please contact Peter Tuck on 9405 1589. We would welcome any assistance. Thank you. 06.01.2022 Initially, with my PTSD and depression, I started to let it define who I was any every aspect of me, and this was not healthy. Everything I did everything I tho...ught of in my head was all down to what my PTSD was doing to me, but this was causing me to spiral downwards and become worse. After my initial breakdown, I was told to just take time off and do nothing. For me, this was the worst thing possible as the less I did the more I would dwell on everything that had happened and how I was being treated. Now I know we all get treated like we are lepers and people do not want to deal with us or seem to be afraid of who we are. While I was off work I started to study psychology, firstly this was to try and understand what was going on in my head as, to be honest, I had no idea what was going on. After studying for a little bit I also realized this was something I could use to help others who had been suffering like I was. I also discovered something called 'Post Traumatic Growth' which basically means using what you have been through to grow and use it to your advantage rather than impeeding you. So I started to look at things differently, realizing that if I am going through hell with this then many others must be going through the same thing, and they are. I did not want others to suffer like this as I knew first hand how hard it is. Also, I knew how hard it was to get any help to work through my PTSD so started to concentrate on how I might be able to help others through these difficult times. I knew I wanted to help people but initially didn't know-how. After meeting Danielle and starting Soldiers & Sirens Western Australia I knew this could make a difference and support those who really need it. I began to look at my PTSD and depression differently. I looked at it as being able to grow from what I was going through, so I would be able to provide a genuine understanding to others that were going through it to. Don't get me wrong things were still very hard but I had a sense of purpose again of which I completely lost when I left the police force. I could now concentrate on rebuilding my life with a focus to offer support to others. This is still an ongoing journey for me and will be for some time to come, but at least now I know what I want to do and what gives me a purpose. If I had not had a breakdown and realized I was suffering from PTSD and depression I would not have been here to help others. We are here to support each other and help provide purpose once again in our lives. We can get through it together, we just need to refocus and use what we have been through for another purpose be it to help others, provide a better understanding of the work we face or something else you choose to use it for. But we can grow from this, we can remain strong, and whether you are in a good or bad space right now we at Soldiers & Sirens Western Australia are here every step of the way to do what we can. Believe in Post Traumatic Growth and believe in yourself. You can still achieve anything you put your mind to no matter what hurdles are put in our way. Don't let PTSD define you, only you can define you! Daniel

03.01.2022 #OTD B24 Liberator Crash kills 59 Australians On the 7th of July 1943, Australia was rocked by one of the worst aviation disasters in military history when a ...fully laden B24 bomber crashed into a company of waiting troops from D Company 2/33rd Australian Infantry Battalion and 158th General Transport Company at Port Moresby. D Company was waiting on the airstrip at Jacksons Field in Port Moresby and were preparing to fly out to join a campaign aimed at flushing out the Japanese army from Lae and the Ramu Valley. The men were waiting in a convoy of six trucks on the edge of the airstrip. In the predawn darkness, a fully laden US Liberator bomber which was carrying four 500 pound bombs struggled to take off from the opposite end of the runway. After rotating, the plane failed to gain height and crashed through the treetops into the convoy. Three of the bombs detonated on impact, and flaming fuel was sprayed all over the waiting trucks, igniting the ammunition within. In addition to the normal ammunition carried, the soldiers were also carrying extra grenades, mortar bombs and up to 300 rounds in bandoliers. The conflagration and exploding ammunition and bombs wreaked a terrible havoc on the waiting soldiers. In addition to the 11 crew on the Liberator, 15 Australians were killed instantly and 44 were injured and would later succumb to their wounds. An additional 92 were injured but would later survive. In minutes, almost the entirety of D Company was wiped out. Lest we forget. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you enjoy this content, please consider liking this page and sharing this post so others can learn about Australias rich military history.
