25.01.2022 On the 30th August, 1999 the people of East Timor were given the opportunity to vote on their future, something that they had been denied since Indonesia invaded 24 years prior. The election was preceded by widespread violence and intimidation by pro-Indonesia militia but despite this, voters were not swayed with the majority choosing independence. However, the jubilation was short lived. And the violence after the vote continued to escalate, with pro-independence civilians t...he targets of murder, arson and looting. Former First Lady of East Timor, Kirsty Sword Gusmão, remembers shedding tears of joy when it was announced that the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) was on its way to restore law and order. Horrific scenes confronted the Australian forces who arrived in East Timor as part of INTERFET. Led by Major General Peter Cosgrove, they found bodies lining in the street, rampant looting and the capital Dili scorched and burning to the ground. Thinking back to that time Kirsty said I was always impressed by the professionalism and discipline, not to mention the great sense of humour and perseverance that the Australian forces showed during INTERFET. I think many of the soldiers developed deep and abiding bonds of friendship with the Timorese, along with mutual respect, Kirsty said. Once INTERFET established peace, the United Nations began building the new country from the ground up, preparing for the first democratic elections in 2002. 25.01.2022 A message from RSL Sub Branch President Although regional Victoria is not in stage 3 lockdown I believe that the safest course of action at present is for the Inglewood-Bridgewater RSL is to keep the Brooke Street hall closed in the present circumstances. Looking at today’s figures, the LGAs where most of our members reside, Bendigo has 19 active cases and Loddon two, according to the DHHS website. That’s the highest active numbers these areas have had since the pandemic st...arted. The last thing we want to do is become responsible for the transmission of COVID-19 in the Inglewood and Bridgewater communities, especially considering many of our members are of an age that would put them at greater risk of serious illness or death, should it be contracted. This will mean the postponing of events and functions such as Mal’s Art Class Exhibition, ceremony’s and meetings. I think the safest option is to consider leaving the hall closed until there is an easing of the current restrictions, like the reopening of state borders. Options to consider are holding meetings online and running ceremonies, such as the upcoming Vietnam Veterans Day 18-Aug-2020, in the same manner as we did ANZAC Day. Welfare services will obviously need to continue as normal. If anyone has an alternative view, I’m happy to discuss. Phone 0407517749. Mick HOBSON

25.01.2022 In 2019 more than 400 veterans participated in RSL Active events across Victoria. Our RSL Active events are designed to bring veterans together, to have fun, me...et new people, and re-connect with old friends. It is easy for RSL Victoria to report on the success of the RSL Active program in terms of the number of events run, and the number of participants. What is harder to report on is the psychological benefits of the program for our veterans who participate. Krystal Brown has been participating in RSL Active events since 2018, over the last two years, through RSL Active, she has had the opportunity to rekindle old friendships and make new connections with the local veteran community. 04.01.2022 Today we commemorate Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War! Victory in the Pacific Day, or VP Day, commemorates the end of the Second Worl...d War on August 14, 1945, when Japan accepted the terms of the unconditional surrender set by the Allied Nations. Also known as VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, it is commemorated on August 15, the day that Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the end of the war in a radio broadcast, before the signing of the official surrender took place on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan, on September 2, 1945. VP Day meant an end to Australia’s war against Japan in the Pacific; a war that had begun half a world away in Europe that was brought close to home after Japan’s unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941, We remember the sacrifices and service of our Diggers who fought for our freedom in the Pacific. #wewillrememberthem. We appreciate the support of our community today, and every day.... Lest we forget.

01.01.2022 Confronting scenes were unfolding as Australian troops arrived in East Timor for the INTERFET deployment, and Professor Major General Jeffrey Rosenfeld (Rtd.) took much of it in his stride. I joined the ADF to serve my country and when called upon to serve I had no hesitation but to agree to deploy, he said. Working as a consultant surgeon to INTERFET Professor Rosenfeld worked around the clock to look after military personnel and the local population’s diverse health needs.... Sometimes, he would visit villages in the mountains to deliver remote health care, including administering antibiotics and vaccinations. Mostly though, he was based at the old museum of Dili which had converted into a hospital by the Australians. An average day at the hospital if there was one would start with ward rounds and patient reviews. Nobody knew how the rest of the day would unfold. Emergency cases ranged from draining abscesses to orthopaedic surgery, stitching up machete wounds and repairing gunshot wounds. What Professor Rosenfeld remembers most about his time in East Timor as part of INTERFET and Later with the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) is the camaraderie that developed while on overseas deployment. The very positive element of being on deployment is that you really do feel part of family. You know that everyone is looking after you, your welfare. Everyone has got everyone’s back and everyone has everyone else’s welfare at heart. We’re all trying to look after and protect each other.
