24.01.2022 Did you know... that following World War II the Royal Australian Navy was required to clear naval mines from the waters around Australia and New Guinea. Mineswe...eping in these areas began in December 1945, locating and clearing 1,816 mines before operations concluded in August 1948. During World War II both the Allies and Japanese laid mines in Australian and New Guinean waters. The RAN's minelayer, HMAS Bungaree, laid almost 10,000 mines in Australian waters alone, and further mines were laid around Australian ports. The RAN's 20th Minesweeping Flotilla was assigned the task of sweeping Australian waters for mines. The flotilla was based at Cairns, Queensland and was commanded from the sloop HMAS Swan. Clearance operations began in December 1945, and were generally conducted by Bathurst-class corvettes. Ships involved included HMAS Swan, Ararat, Cowra, Deloraine, Echuca, Katoomba, Lithgow, Mildura and Warrnambool as well as harbour defence motor launches 1323, 1328, 1329 and general purpose vessels 960 and 963. Over 1,200 sailors were involved in the operation. One ship, the Bathurst-class corvette HMAS Warrnambool, was sunk during the mine-clearing operations, and four sailors were killed and another 25 wounded in her sinking. Eleven officers and sailors were recommended for honours and awards for their role in the operation, with all recommendations being fully endorsed by Vice Admiral John Collins, the First Naval Member, Australian Commonwealth Naval Board. Some of the awards were delayed and others never granted, however, due to disagreements between the RAN and the Government over whether post-war minesweeping constituted 'operational' service Lest we forget. 15.01.2022 On this day... in 1945, the War Widows' Guild of Australia was formed. Mrs Jessie Vasey, widow of Major General George Vasey, was the organisation's first natio...nal president. George Vasey had commanded a brigade in the Greek campaign and on Crete, and had then commanded the 7th Division during the Kokoda Trail campaign and the Battle of Buna-Gona. He was killed in an aircraft crash on 5 March 1945. Jessie Vasey had been the secretary of the AIF Women's Association during the war, assisting the wives of serving men. She fought for increases to the widow's pension, for changes to the Repatriation Act, and for housing for elderly widows. She was awarded an OBE in 1950 and CBE in 1963. In recognition of their loss, members of the War Widows' Guild are afforded seating on the stands for the Adelaide ANZAC Day Commemorative March. Lest we forget. 07.01.2022 Several people have asked me about the prevalence of suicide among veterans of World War I after my address at the State Remembrance Day service. Recent researc...h indicates that around 550 members of the First AIF took their own lives between 1915 and 1922, with large spikes in the incidence of suicide in early 1919 and late 1920. According to the research, this is indicative of men who were unprepared and unsupported for what they had to face when they were sent home. Members of the First AIF kept taking their lives many years after the war. Two notable examples are Major General Harold Edward "Pompey" Elliott CB CMG DSO DCM VD, who died in 1931, and Captain Hugo Vivian Hope Throssell VC, who died two years later. Veterans these days are far better supported when they return from operations, but there is definitely much more to do. It is critically important that the Department of Veterans' Affairs has robust data on veteran suicide in order to develop prevention and intervention programs to help reduce the number of veteran suicides. Lest we forget. 02.01.2022 On this day in 1914, the first Australian and New Zealand contingent sailed from Albany, WA, bound for Egypt. Of those that sailed in that first convoy only one...-third would return to Australia physically unscathed, although many that had not been killed or wounded were suffering from grave mental health problems as a result of their long service. Lest we forget. Ian Smith Chair Anzac Day Committee Ships of the first convoy prepare to depart Albany on 1 November 1914: AWM
