25.01.2022 The story of Able Seaman Teddy Sheean who was a crew member of HMAS Armadale has been told but today his bravery has finally been recognise by Australia. In WW2 His ship was attacked by numerous Japanese planes and the ship suffered 2 torpedoes and a bomb hitting the ship. As the ship began sinking and the ships crew were taking to lifeboats and still under attack Sheean helped to release a lifeboat that was stuck. He received two wounds but despite his wound he went to a gun... and began firing on planes in order to protect his crew in the water. He damaged some of the attacking planes and continued firing as his ship sunk. He continued firing and went down with the ship. He was mentioned in dispatches for his bravery, but many felt he deserved more. Today the Prime Minister announced after new evidence (including from the Japanese war archives) and a panels review, Sheean is to be awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. The family of this brave man can be proud of his bravery and his much deserved VC.

23.01.2022 After a 19-year hiatus, Kawana Waters RSL Sub Branch member Chief Petty Officer Tony Yarnold re-joined the Navy to support Operation COVID-19 Assist and along... the way celebrated his 60th birthday! Previously serving in the Navy for 25 years, Tony recently moved to the Sunshine Coast from Terrigal, NSW and found the response to the global pandemic calling him. He has been working within the Tactical Operations Centre and Quarantine Control Monitoring. It has given me a renewed sense of comradeship, teamwork and significance being part of the ADF support to the Queensland community, Tony said. I would encourage any ADF Reservists past or present to consider getting on-board to support our ADF colleagues and the greater Australian Community, and don’t let age be a barrier; I turn 60 on this operation! What an amazing man!

20.01.2022 Having the rare opportunity to hear directly from veterans who lived through an important historical event is a great way for students to understand their servi...ce and sacrifice. Late last year, these students from Hervey Bay State High School's Year 12 modern history class were lucky enough to get a first-hand account of the Vietnam War from Hervey Bay RSL Sub Branch members. "They were captivated by the interesting stories the RSL members shared. The students all learned a lot and really appreciated the experience," said teacher Tinka Welton. Our RSL Education website also provides high quality learning resources to educate and inspire students - www.rsleducation.com.au

12.01.2022 #BREAKING Teddy Sheean, World War II hero, has posthumously received the Victoria Cross today. Edward "Teddy" Sheean was an ordinary seaman serving on HMAS Armi...dale whose death during a Japanese aerial attack on his ship has become a well-known episode in Australian Second World War lore. His courageous sacrifice began when HMAS Armidale was hit by two aircraft-launched torpedoes off the coast of what is now Timor-Leste. Armidale began to sink fast. Sheean strapped himself into the gun and commenced firing at the enemy, damaging at least two enemy aircraft. He shot down two planes, and crewmates recall seeing tracer rising from beneath the surface as Sheean was dragged under the water, firing until the end. He died on 1 December 1942 aged just 18. Only 49 of the 149 men on board survived the attack and subsequent ordeal on rafts and in life boats. Media release: https://bit.ly/2XU6ncX #TYFYS #VictoriaCross Royal Australian Navy
