23.01.2022 Today we pause and pay tribute to HMAS Sydney and the 645 crew members that were lost on board in the Indian ocean on 19 November 1941, in a sudden and disastrous encounter with the German raider KORMORAN off the coast of Western Australia. The discovery of the wreck decades later showed that every Australian sailor had stayed at his post and fought the ship even as it slipped beneath the waves. Lest We Forget.

15.01.2022 Today we commemorate the bombing of Darwin and pay our respects to the lives lost and the impact of the air raids on the Australian mainland during the Second World War. WWII arrived on the shores of mainland Australia on 19 February 1942 when Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin, the location of a major Allied base. Enemy aircraft bombed and strafed Darwin for about 40 minutes, resulting in eight of the 47 ships at the harbour being sunk with one ship’s cargo of 200 depth charg...es exploding alongside the Darwin wharf. A total of 64 raids were made on Darwin between February 1942 and November 1943, tragically killing more than 250 Allied service personnel and civilians. The Bombing of Darwin Day marks an attack that is etched in Australia’s history. Read more Air raids - https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/ Lest We Forget. : Australian War Memorial

02.01.2022 Women played a vital role in the second world war. Shortages of labour during WWII led to the establishment of women’s auxiliary services attached to the Army, Navy, and Airforce. Conscripted from December 1941, they were given the choice of joining one of the following auxiliary services- the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), or the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) which freed up to servicemen for front line duties. Women were emp...loyed in roles such as telegraphists, drivers, clerical staff, aircraft ground staff, wireless telegraphists, administrators, and signals operators. Fast forward to the 21st century and their legacy lives on. Today, the RSL NSW Auxiliaries volunteers have overcome society biases and comprise of men and women who work to raise funds for the wellbeing of current and ex-serving members of the ADF and their families. Auxiliary volunteers visit veterans in the hospital, in aged care facilities, assist with sub-Branch commemoration activities, and cater for sub-Branch events. If you would like to learn more about how you can contribute to the veteran community or join the RSL Auxiliary, visit https://www.rslnsw.org.au/get-involved/rsl-auxiliaries.
