25.01.2022 On 12 May each year, we celebrate International Nurses Day. This date is chosen specifically as it is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. Nurses have played a vital role in Australia's military history for over a century and continue to do so. To all nurses, both at home and abroad, we thank you for your service. https://www.awm.gov.au/articles//international-nurses-day-0

24.01.2022 14 August 2020 MEDIA STATEMENT 75th ANNIVERSARY OF VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC (VP DAY) Saturday, 15th August 2020... Victory in the Pacific (VP Day), is celebrated on the 15th August. This commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on the 14th August 1945. For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over. The following day, 15th August is referred to as VP Day. That milestone date, 75 years on, remains one of the most pivotal moments in history. It was a day of jubilation, with crowds spilling on to city streets to dance and celebrate. But it was also tinged with sadness, as people remembered the sacrifice made by Service men and women during the six-year war. We may be unable to mark the 75th anniversary of VP Day with traditional commemorations and gatherings this year, but RSL Tasmania is committed to honouring our veterans from this significant event. Due to COVID-19 restrictions a public commemorative Service will not be conducted in Hobart. Instead, RSL Tasmania will conduct a private commemoration Service within the grounds of Government House at 11am on Saturday, 15th August 2020, with a limited number of invited guests. A pre-recorded Address by Her Excellency, Professor, the Honourable Kate Warner AC, Governor of Tasmania will be available on the Government House and RSL Tasmania websites later in the day. Small local commemorative Services will be conducted at Ulverstone, Penguin, Smithton, Wynyard and King Island. Media contact: Robert Dick, State President, RSL Tasmania - Mob: 0448 889 848

23.01.2022 In honour of those brave service men and women who serve, plant your poppy online at www.poppyappeal.com.au. #remembertoremember

22.01.2022 Keeping on top of COVID takes team work, so please remember the golden rules so we can keep Tasmania safe and keep doing the things we love!

22.01.2022 Tomorrow is Remembrance Day commemorating the signing of the Armistice agreement between German and Allied forces on 11 November 1918 that signalled an end to World War I. The legacy of Remembrance Day has expanded to become a solemn reminder of the dedication, service and sacrifice of Australians who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. All Australians are urged to donate to the annual Poppy Appeal fundraiser in memory of those who suffered. You can dedicate a poppy by making a donation at www.remembertoremember.com.au or www.poppyappeal.com.au

20.01.2022 Due to current COVID restrictions, we were unable to stage our commemorative Remembrance Day service as a public event. However, we ask you Remember to Remember by joining in online - you can follow your own service here, and please take a minute at 11am to pause, reflect and remember the service and sacrifice of Australians who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

19.01.2022 REMEMBERING THE SERVICE OF OUR MALAYA AND BORNEO VETERANS Today, on Malaya and Borneo Veterans' Day, Australia recognises our personnel who served in the Malayan Emergency (19481960), and the Indonesian Confrontation, or Konfrontasi, (19621966). Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said although sensitivities surrounding the conflicts prevented widespread media coverage at the time, our Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel played an important role in bringing t...hese conflicts to an end. The Malayan Emergency was declared three years after the end of the Second World War, when the Malayan Communist Party launched an insurgency against British colonial rule, Mr Chester said. Australia’s commitment began with the Royal Australian Air Force in 1950 and they were joined by the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army in 1955. On 31 July this year, we marked 60 years since the end of the Malayan Emergency and while the Malayan government declared the Emergency over on 31 July 1960, some Australian units remained in Malaya until 1963. It is important we recognise our Defence personnel who served over the 13 years of Australia’s involvement, in what was one of Australia’s longest military commitments. The Indonesian Confrontation, a small undeclared war, began in 1962 after Indonesian forces launched attacks on the newly federated state of Malaysia. Australia’s commitment began in 1964, and in 1965 our troops assisted in small-scale operations in the thickly forested terrain of Borneo, Mr Chester said. Although the situation had stabilised by the end of 1965, events within Indonesia led to an official end to the conflict in the following year when a treaty between Indonesia and Malaysia was signed. Today, we pay tribute to the 39 Australians who died while serving in the Malayan Emergency, 15 of whom were killed in action. We also pay tribute to over 20 Australians who lost their lives whilst serving in the Indonesian Confrontation. To those veterans of these two conflicts, on behalf of Australia, thank you for your service and sacrifice. The Australian War Memorial will hold a Last Post Ceremony at 4:55pm AEST today, 31 August 2020, to commemorate Malaya and Borneo Veterans’ Day, and the service of Private Larry Richard Downes who died serving during the Indonesian Confrontation. Bookings are required and can be made on the Australian War Memorial website to secure your place. To find out more about the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation, please visit the Anzac Portal website. See more

18.01.2022 A Commemorative Service was conducted by RSL Tasmania this morning at the Hobart Cenotaph. Unlike other years, due to the COVID-19 restrictions in place, unfortunately we could not advertise the Service as a public event. However, we are grateful to those veterans, their families and other members of the public who still attended to pay their respects and remember. Placing of wreaths was led by Her Excellency, Professor, the Hon Kate Warner AC, Governor of Tasmania, fo...llowed by Federal Government representatives, The Hon Peter Gutwein MP, Premier of Tasmania, and other Tasmanian Government representatives. Wreaths were also placed by representatives of the Defence Force, Tasmania Police and 12 Ex Service Organizations. The Service concluded with a rendition of the famous Vera Lynn song "We'll Meet Again" sung by Musician Melanie Brown, accompanied by the Australian Army Band - Tasmania. RSL Tasmania acknowledges and is grateful for the support of all involved in today's Service. See more

13.01.2022 One week from today we will mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. To commemorate this important anniversary, the Australian Government D...epartment of Veterans' Affairs and the Australian War Memorial will be holding a commemorative service on 15 August, with coverage starting from 9.30am. With pandemic restrictions still in place, this service will be closed to the public, however, thanks to ABC Australia , the service will be broadcast nationally, so that you are able to commemorate all those who have served, in the safety of your own home. I encourage you to take a moment on this day to remember the service and sacrifices made by almost one million Australians who served our country in the Second World War. #OneInAMillion #TYFYS

12.01.2022 We thank Her Excellency, Professor, the Honourable Kate Warner AC, Governor of Tasmania, Mr Warner and Government House staff for their support in hosting RSL Tasmania and allowing us to conduct the Commemorative Service today for the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Pacific within the grounds of Government House. 12.01.2022 Paul Byrnes seeks information on WW2 ANZAC soldiers who were underage when they enlisted between 1939 and 1945. This is for Paul's second book on the subject. ...Anyone who knows of someone who was under 18 at enlistment, can you please email: [email protected]. If in doubt, email him anyway so he can investigate. An example is Leonard Roy McLeod (pictured), from North Footscray, Victoria, who was about 15 when he first tried to enlist in 1941. He was sent home. A few months later he tried again and was successful. He told his mother he was only doing Home Guard duties, but he was sent straight to New Guinea, where he worked on biscuit bombers, and then in the 2/7th Battalion, fighting near Gona. His mother reported his age to the army in mid-1943 and he was discharged, whereupon he joined the US Small Ships Service, serving throughout the Pacific until 1946. Len McLeod lives in rural Queensland. Photo used with family permission.

04.01.2022 I was proud to represent Federal Leader of the Opposition Anthony Albanese at Hobart’s Remembrance Day Commemoration. On this day, at 11am, people from countrie...s across the world commemorate the Armistice signed to end the First World War. It is also a day to remember all members of armed forces who have died in the line of duty. I thank the RSL Tasmania for organising today’s service. It is vital that we mark these occasions to remind us of the terrible cost of war, so that we may understand that the decision to enter conflict is one that must be made with the utmost gravity. Lest we forget.

04.01.2022 Thankyou to all who attended and contributed to the 105th Annual State Congress today in Launceston. We look forward to the opportunity for a bigger and better Congress in 2021!

02.01.2022 This week I stopped by to visit Brian Winspear, who will be turning 100 next month! Brian was presented with a medallion for his service in the Royal Australia...n Air Force during World War 2. During these challenging times, it's important we continue to commemorate our veterans for their sacrifice and bravery.

02.01.2022 Thank you Libby Perkins for enabling us to share this tribute.
