There are dozens of fires ra...vaging our communities, 10 at Emergency levels, lives have been lost and hundreds of homes destroyed. Over 1 million hectares of land have already been destroyed and it is impossible to estimate the massive number of native animals killed. Our hearts are breaking at the immensity of the tragedy and scale of the wildlife loss. As always we are indebted to our volunteers who are continuing to rescue animals in treacherous conditions. We are cautioning everyone to stay safe and are well aware that many WIRES volunteers have had to evacuate their homes. We particularly thank the Rural Fire Service who are patrolling many of the potential hot spots and assisting volunteers to stay safe. WIRES volunteers must wait until the fire grounds have been declared safe to actively search for wildlife. Sadly experience has taught us that the greatest impact in terms of rescue and care will be for animals that survive the fires and end up in care due to lack of habitat and extreme food shortages in the weeks and months to come. The conditions are volatile and volunteers are taking every precaution to remain safe while continuing to undertake their work. Not only are our volunteers responding to fire and drought related rescues, they are doing their best to respond to hundreds of other requests for rescue help for hundreds of sick, injured and orphaned native animals every day.
