24.01.2022 Its National Desexing Month and we are reminding all pet owners about the importance of desexing their pets! Desexing plays a crucial part in managing unwanted litters and could reduce numbers of unwanted animals that end up at local RSPCAs and other rescue groups around the country every year. During the last financial year, RSPCA ACT desexed over 1,200 animals!... For more information about why desexing it important head to our knowledgebase here http://bit.ly/RSPCAKB To book in your pet for desexing visit our Desexing Clinic web page here http://bit.ly/RSPCAACTDC

23.01.2022 This is Otter, a delightful rabbit who is at RSPCA ACT waiting for a new owner who can give her a loving and safe forever home. Could she be the perfect pet for you?

23.01.2022 Our phone lines are down! Please bear with us while we work to fix the problem. For any urgent enquiries please contact us at [email protected] and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

22.01.2022 Meet Stevie, an enthusiastic young pooch who is ready to step out of the RSPCA ACT shelter and into the real world. The energetic dog and curious, cuddly cat Silas are this weeks featured pets looking for loving homes. Could they be the perfect additions to your life?

21.01.2022 Meet Azula! This poor birdie was brought in to us via another vet clinic after a kind person had found her, broken and worse for wear. Azula has been under the excellent care of one of our veterinarians, and is now ready for adoption. Like most ringnecks, it takes some time for Azula to warm up to people - her new owners will need to understand that she is a bird that requires consistent socialising. Due to the nature of her injury, she has spent some time with her arm in a... sling while she recovers, so she has been prone to muscle wastage in that wing. With her set up in the shelter, she has begun to work this back (think physiotherapy but for birds!) and is growing stronger in her wing each day. Her new cage has had to be kitted out for this purpose, and we hope that one day she will regain complete use of her wing, but her new owners will need to keep in mind that she may not, and may need continued veterinary treatment at their local avian vet. If you are interested in booking an adoption appointment, head to our website to find out more. Azula's Adoption Profile: https://www.adoptapet.com.au/pet/764115

20.01.2022 Our Poorly Drawn Pet Portrait day was just two weeks ago. Can you believe it? We just wanted to say a big thank you for all of our volunteers for their beautiful artworks, and thank you to all the people who donated on the day to receive their lovely portraits. Here are some of our absolute favourites from on the day. Make sure you keep your eyes posted for future events!

20.01.2022 Local Bachelor finds forever home! In the fashion of a true tinder love story, wed like to announce the handsome Cluck Norris has found his special ladies. His adoption application was one of many giggles, but we knew for sure that handsome cluck was sure to find his perfect match.... His new family have told us already that - "he is such a character. He had his ladies swooning at his skills of controlling the lawnmower and its abilities to uncover bugs hidden in the grass." Best of luck to the happy pentuple and hope they enjoy their lives in the coop

19.01.2022 This week’s RSPCA ACT Pets of the Week are a sweet pooch called Isla and a cat named Flynn who has plenty to say. Could one of the delightful animals be the perfect pet for you?

19.01.2022 Idris is a beautiful big bunny who is looking for his forever home. This is his second time at the RSPCA, and now hes ready to try again! He is a curious boy who loves to give you a good sniffing, but can be nervous at first, so needs to be approached slowly. Idris would prefer a home with no children. He likes to explore his surroundings, and his new home will need to offer him lots of space to stretch his legs. Idris has been handled in his previous home, and is calm whe...n held, but will jump out of your lap once hes had enough. For more info about Idris and to book an adoption appointment visit his profile here https://www.adoptapet.com.au/pet/748397

19.01.2022 The RSPCA ACT shelter is extremely outdated, was never built for purpose and requires urgent work to provide for more functional care and services to the ACT’s animals in need. Last year, our Board of Directors agreed that our redevelopment is a priority project and together we have invested much time and effort into moving forward with our ‘Project Home’. Over the past year we have worked on business case options and master-planning, with staff and volunteers providing pra...ctical inputs on day-to-day requirements as part of the planning processes. We are very pleased to announce that our most recent efforts have resulted in us securing a commitment from ACT Labor’s Chris Steel MLA, where a re-elected ACT Labor Government will assist us to build a new, fit for purpose facility in the next term of government. This commitment is an important step however, we still have work to do to reach our goal. We would like to thank you for your ongoing interest in us, your support of RSPCA ACT, the animals in our care and those who still need our help. Keep posted on outcomes by signing up to our eNewsletter at our website www.rspca-act.org.au

17.01.2022 Meet Harvey. A sweet little dove who has recently gone through a pretty rough time. Harvey was brought to us by a member of the public after he was found a little worse for wear. We think Harvey unfortunately has had a tumble with a cat and found himself in need of a bit of TLC. With some care from our vets and time to recover Harvey is feeling a lot better. With his feathers growing back he is finally feeling handsome again and is now ready to find his new home. He would lo...ve an outdoor aviary hopefully with some girls he can show off his scars to. Girls dig guys with scars right? If you have some room in your aviary for a tough little dove looking for some love visit Harveys adoption profile and book an adoption appointment now. https://www.adoptapet.com.au/pet/760336

17.01.2022 Today we want to introduce you to Phantom. Phantom is a brave cat who endured much pain, but thankfully will live with his forever Guardian Angel this holiday season. *Warning: Graphic description follows in next paragraph* Found abandoned at our front gate, we estimate Phantom had been alone for over 12 hours before he was found. A rotting wound ran from the bottom of his ear down to the lip and jaw with a small number of maggots lay inside eating away the rotting flesh... from his injury. Our team worked to place Phantom under anaesthetic to clean his wound. The feel of a home provides so much more comfort and reassurance to an animal as they heal. So once Phantom was on the road to recovery, he was placed with one of our dedicated foster carers for his wounds to heal. Donate to help animals like Phantom: https://bit.ly/2Iw6EhH With time, Phantom’s eye slowly began to scar over, distorting its shape. While it remained functional Phantom could no longer completely close his eyelid to cover his eye. In the best interest of his quality of life, we made the decision to remove his eye to relieve his pain and discomfort. Soon after his surgery, Phantom found his forever home. We don’t know Phantom’s story before he arrived at our gate. But thanks to our generous donors and supporters, we gave him the second chance he deserved. The chance at a better life. Phantom holds a dear place in our hearts here at the shelter. Today, we’re asking you to open yours and to become a Guardian Angel to an animal that needs your help. Your contribution, no matter how small, makes all the difference. This Christmas and beyond, help us make second chances come true. Make a donation and become a Guardian Angel today at https://bit.ly/2Iw6EhH

16.01.2022 Meet Misty, a friendly and delightful older dog who is at RSPCA ACT waiting for a comfy retirement home to call her own. She needs a short daily stroll, some fun and games in the garden and plenty of places for her to nap and rest her head. Could she be the perfect pet for you?

16.01.2022 The scent of pine in the air can mean one thing and one thing only. Christmas is here! While we usually would suggest you don’t put up your tree until December1 you must make an exception for a REAL Christmas Tree with all funds raised helping animals in need! So, make sure you harness up your reindeer and prepare your sleigh. Christmas Trees will go on sale from this Saturday 28th November until 23rd December. ... To help transport your tree: Make sure your vehicle is large enough to contain a large tree (our trees are approx. 1.8m tall) Make sure if you plan to attach your tree to your roof, you have roof racks and rope to ensure it is safely secure You may wish to bring a pair of gardening gloves as these are real pine trees with spiky pine needles and sticky sap ( you may also want to line the inside of your car with a tarp or sheet) Finally, to help maintain social distancing and to keep our staff, volunteers and supporters safe, we ask where possible for you to carry your own tree to your car, or bring a friend to help you! + = Find out more: https://www.rspca-act.org.au/christmastrees

16.01.2022 Adoption update! We love to hear from our adopters to hear how their new forever friends are doing. This is Mischief who was adopted from us back in July. She is so loved, here is what her new humans have to say! From day one she had us wrapped around her paw, and over the past four weeks she has settled into a great routine.... Highlights are definitely morning and evening walks. The evenings provide excitement as we past the tennis courts and mornings often provide a reward with the collection of tennis balls growing. (Fetch is a favourite) she has made friends with a number of dogs and their people on our walks and greets them excitedly. She is smart, cheeky, eager to please and oh so sweet. We are still taking our time, slow and steady with Missy and our cat Eliot. Missy is very enthusiastic to be the very best of friends, while Eliot sees them more as flatmates - not friends! (She is a lot more energetic than our old boy was). Interaction is positive, just enthusiastic, so we are not worried. She is living up to her name, but at the same time bringing us much happiness (I love Staffy cuddles). If you have an adoption update youd love to share, send us an email at [email protected]

12.01.2022 Dudley recently celebrated his 10th birthday! This gorgeous boy was born in the shelter 10 years ago. His fur mum recently sent us an email letting us know how he was going and this is what she had to say. "We had come to the shelter to adopt a pair of adult dogs and had chosen two beautiful 3 and 4 year olds but when we arrived, we were told that the pair were not compatible and could not be rehomed together. Coincidentally, on that day, a litter of pups had just been rel...eased for adoption and though we had not thought a pup was not going to be suitable for our lifestyle we immediately fell in love with Dudley and he became ours. Tonight as I write this I am sitting with my beautiful black boy lying across my feet. On the day we collected him from the shelter Dudley was driven straight to work to begin, what was to become ,10 years of devoted customer service. At 9 weeks of age he was immediately put to work meeting and greeting customers in my furniture shop. He took his job very seriously and made sure even the most dog unfriendly people warmed to him. Many customers confessed that they were really only coming back to the shop to see Dudley, not great for business, but never has there been a dog happier to see his friends. He remains, and has always been a dog who lives to please. A wonderful companion and a dog with such a generous and warm nature. He has spent his whole life being wherever we are and we are so grateful that we have been in a position to be able to do that. He has a companion, another RSPCA rescue dog ,Molly, who we flew to Canberra from Noosa. We had seen her photo on line when we were looking for a friend for Dudley and fell in love. She was described to us as a Labrador cross but is quite obviously mostly ridgeback and has unexpectedly grown to be exactly the same size as Dudley. She arrived a year after we got Dudley and had been abandoned on a roadside when she was only a few weeks old. She was 14 weeks when she arrived with us and was welcomed by Dudley with great enthusiasm. He laid his favourite toy at her feet, shared his food and water bowls, and finally curled up with her on his bed and cared for her. They remain best friends and he still cares for his more nervous sister. Our thanks go to the RSPCA for the opportunity to adopt these amazing dogs, we cannot imagine life without them." How cute? We are so grateful that Dudley and Molly found their perfect forever homes. We love hearing stories of our past adoptees on how their lives are now. If you have an adoption update youd like to share email us at [email protected]

12.01.2022 This is Arnie, a shy pooch who has had a tough time and needs a gentle, loving owner who can help him live his best life. Hes at RSPCA ACT waiting for the right person to take him in. Could it be you?

12.01.2022 Cute bunnies? We got em. Meet Poppy, a darling little lady who was recently surrendered to the shelter and is now on the journey to find a new home. This girl has been in our care for some time, and has recently been in foster care while being treated for an infection in her eye socket. This bun doesnt have a left eye. ... Poppy loved living in her foster home, growing in confidence each day. Shes a little bit cheeky, very inquisitive and loves the attention of humans. If you think you could give Poppy a forever home, make sure you check out the rest of her adoption profile here: https://www.adoptapet.com.au/pet/759374

11.01.2022 Have you recently lost a pig? RSPCA ACT is looking for the owners of a young pig who has come into the care of the shelter. Individuals who believe this animal may belong to them will need to provide shelter staff proof of ownership of the pig prior to reclaiming.... 10.01.2022 How cute is Chapman? A gorgeous cat adopted over a year ago. His humans have sent us a lovely update on how he is going. "One year ago today I adopted our beautiful chompy Chappy-cat. Coming from a life as a stray, he took a while to learn the ropes, but now he's fully secure in his position as high ruler of all, with us as his lowly food slaves (and he'll so kindly give us several hours notice that his food time is, in fact, coming up). ... He's grown into a confident and comfortable cat, happy to cuddle or just sit nearby keeping an eye on things. I can't wait for many more years with this screamy boi, even if he does constantly steal the seat I was *just* about to sit on." We love hearing how our previous adopters are doing. If you have an adoption update to share please email us at [email protected] or send us a DM!

10.01.2022 Shnap out of it! It's Cher! This leading lady arrived at the shelter with her two daughters, and is now ready to find a home where she can be the star. Cher can be a bit reserved around new people, but once she warms up, she will be a delight. Cher would do best indoors as she is a smaller bunny and, just like her name sake, has quite an impressive head of hair so she will need grooming due to her longer coat. ... Cher could live with other bunnies with slow introductions, and older children who can respect the need to give the diva some space! Cher is a quiet bunny, and will need a family to interact with her slowly, gently and allow her the time to build trust. If you think you have the space in your home for this darling rabbit, please book an appointment to meet her! https://adoptapet.com.au/pet/812602

10.01.2022 Adoption update from a cheeky Horse who was recently in our care! Rowdy was surrendered to our Inspectors after his owner was doing it tough and was unable to provide the care he required. After some time in a paddock at RSPCA ACT he made his way to a new forever home. Here is what his new family had to say: Rowdy is a much loved part of our family. It was hoped that he and the racehorse who had already retired to our property would get along. It was an instant friendship an...d the two horses are so closely bonded now. So much so that they cannot be parted. Each morning, together they greet me at their feed bins and put on a real show of whinnying and nodding of their heads. Rowdy has always loved eating and still will often snort whilst eating. He particularly loves carrots, which the team at the shelter introduced him to. During the day they play games to annoy each other and race against one another to show off. Rowdy loves the sandpit and rolls several times a day in it. He enjoys his weekly grooming sessions but always rolls in dirt immediately afterwards. It took a little while for Rowdy to show his true character. I always thought he missed the staff at RSPCA. After a few months, he really settled in and showed affection and independence. He often just comes out of the blue and snuggles with me when the other horse is not looking. When he arrived he was underweight and a lot of his hair was missing. Within three months he looked like he could return to the show ring. Rowdy has got used to having his feet filed and the farrier is so gentle with him. He gives me so much joy. I love watching him and the other horse enjoy our property and the fact that they have both found a soul mate in each other. Rowdy deserves his new found happy place. We dont often receive animals like Rowdy at the shelter, which makes it hard to predict the resources we will need upon their arrival. From additional feed to supplies for veterinary checks and cleaning. If you can, please donate today to help us help them. Donate at: http://bit.ly/RowdyDonate

10.01.2022 Meet the beautiful bonded pairs at RSPCA ACT. If you have the space in your home, and your heart, why not welcome a bonded pair of animals to your family. "River has settled in with our family quite well. She is a very smart dog and is learning things very quuckly.... She has learnt how to wait when her food is out in front of her, how to walk on her lead and shows us her funny personality every day. Here are some happy snaps of her and her mate Louie." We love hearing from our adoptees and their new families. If you have a story to share send us a DM or email us at [email protected]
