22.01.2022 RSPCA QLD: Jail Time for Animal Abuser Mr. C. SAMMONS suffocated his dog and left him to rot. It’s hard to comprehend how someone could be so vial towards a living creature and still claim to ‘love animals’. SAMMONS was yesterday found guilty of 1 charge of animal cruelty and 1 charge of failing to provide treatment for his 1 year old red cattle dog, Freckles.... Magistrate Browne said when sentencing the defendant to imprisonment, that the penalty reflected general deterrence and public denouncement of Sammons’ conduct. Freckles was suffering from injuries sustained a few weeks prior to his death, which SAMMONS claimed were inflicted by a horse. The witness stated Freckles was dragging his legs, unable to walk, and crawling on his front legs in obvious distress. Rather than seeking veterinary treatment, SAMMONS took his dog out to the bush and suffocated him with a plastic bag, returning to tell the witness he had taken Freckles for ‘his last car ride’. It’s unimaginable the pain and suffering Freckles would have endured for weeks and then to have this terrible end. When our Inspector found Freckles’ skeletal remains discarded in the bush, Freckles still had a large galvanised chain and stainless steel D-shackle collar attached around his neck. Magistrate Terence Browne heard the matter at Cairns Magistrate Court on November 9, 2020. SAMMONS appeared via video link from jail in Townsville. SAMMONS pleaded guilty to both charges, one of failure to treat Freckle’s injuries and one cruelty charge related to the suffocation of Freckles with a plastic bag. Magistrate Browne said the Statement of Facts was disturbing to read and the only way to describe the conduct was cruel. He also took into account SAMMONS’ extensive criminal history. In addition to sentencing Sammons to an actual term of imprisonment for his offending, Magistrate Browne ordered that Sammons be prohibited from owning animals for life. Magistrate Browne sentenced SAMMONS to: Six months imprisonment for charge 1 (failure to treat). Twelve months imprisonment for charge 2 (Cruelty). Imprisonment to be served concurrently and eligible for parole after 4 months. A lifetime prohibition order. Court costs of $101.80. Legal professional costs $1,200. If you witness animal cruelty, contact our 24/7 Animal Emergency Hotline 1300 ANIMAL.

22.01.2022 BEHIND THE BADGE WITH RSPCA QLD: After months of living rough in a hollow log on a construction site and scrounging for food, ‘Mr Fox’ was terrified. RSPCA Senior Rescue Officer Jo said the maltese-cross was shaking and growling and very fearful of humans, but she managed to safely capture and transport the matted ball of fluff to the vet for treatment. With a new haircut and loving care, watch the transformation of Mr Fox.

19.01.2022 SNIP THE STRAPS! RSPCA QLD are receiving a significant increase in rescue call-outs to wildlife tangled in small waste and in particular, disposable medical masks. The RSPCA Animal Ambulance responded but were ultimately unable to locate the entangled ibis and have not received any further calls about the bird.... Entanglements are a killer. 08.01.2022 RSPCA Animal Ambulance Rescue Impeccable spotting done by Gina, a member of the public, led to a teary and heartwarming reunion between pet and owner. While travelling at 90km/h on the Motorway at Deagon Deviation, Gina noticed a small figure dragging itself along the road before disappearing. After contacting RSPCA QLD, Rescue Officer Sam and volunteer Chris were dispatched. Searching high and low it wasn’t until eagle-eyed Chris spotted a fluffy tail poking out the bot...tom of the rounded end of the guard-rail that Portia the cat was found. It was clear she was in a lot of pain. Thankfully, she was microchipped (and the details kept up-to-date) allowing her to be returned home to her relieved family and immediately off for veterinary care. Portia had jumped from her third-story balcony during the night and broken her leg. Her leg had suffered irreparable nerve damage and needed to be amputated. Now a three-legged wonder who has fully recovered, Portia is still able to run and play as she could before! If you see a sick, trapped, injured or orphaned animal, call our RSPCA animal emergency line on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) available 24/7.

08.01.2022 Missy is loving her new life and all of the new sights and smells that come with it Adopted late last year, Missy has had a ball at the beach, sniffing every inch of the garden bed and made lasting friendships at the dog park. Adopters Tamsen, George and Finlay have ensured Missy doesn’t miss out on a thing with plenty of new adventures and long walks with the odd couch day thrown in for balance ... We haven't found any food that she doesn't like yet, and so she has put a nice bit of weight on, so we can't see her bony ribs poking out so much now, but she isn't complaining, and is looking very healthy and shiny at the moment from Tamsen’s words it sounds like she is positively glowing inside and out. Thank you Tamsen, George and Finlay for choosing to adopt, not shop and letting Missy into your hearts and home

04.01.2022 Alf's happytail had our adoptions team beaming with pride not in Alf, but in his adopters After an unstable start to life Alf found himself at the RSPCA waiting for a true forever home. He was with us for months. Finally, his dreams (and ours) came true when Chris and Jeanette came through our doors more than two years ago. The couple instantly fell in love with Alf’s goofy, affectionate and energetic nature. But, Alf didn't know how good he had it with Chris and Jeanette ...and tried his hardest to break-free of his new home. Thankfully, Chris and Jeanette weren't going to give up on him that easily. They reached out to our rehabilitation team for help and immediately got to work securing their backyard. We want to provide him with the life he deserves, they said. Two years on, Alf is living every day in love with his new family. He spends his days playing with his furry sibling, snuggling up with his hooman parents, helping with tasks around the house or sleeping in a cosy ball of blankets He has such a big, beautiful heart and is a real mumma’s boy... We cannot imagine the tough gig he had in past homes, but we sure do just adore him. We wish this little family a long life of happiness moving forward! Thank you Chris and Jeanette for providing Alfred with the most loving home possible

02.01.2022 One year on, following the finalisation of a Nov 2019 RSPCA prosecution, horses Rory and Baby are recovered and ready for a forever home. Baby, a three year old quarter horse mare and Rory, an eleven year old thoroughbred gelding, have been in foster care in Townsville for a year as the case rolled on. The former owners, Anthony and Tania Smith were each fined $3,500 and prohibited from owning animals for four years after pleading guilty to charges relating to failing to fee...d and failing to treat injuries. Foster carer Yvette has said they’re both beautiful horses and very friendly, Rory is an absolute sweetheart and they both come running for food. Baby is a quick learner, she hasn’t actually been broken in yet, but she has huge potential. They’ve been through a lot, but we’re excited for their second chance. We’re tremendously grateful to Yvette and it’s outcomes like these that make it all worthwhile. You can see the profiles of Rory and Baby online at www.rspcaqld.org.au/adopt before applying to adopt. 01.01.2022 A day in the life of an RSPCA Animal Ambulance Volunteer Jumping into the Brisbane City Council supported Animal Ambulance, volunteer Ian starts his shift with the rescue of a baby possum injured by a cat. On its capture and return to our Wildlife Hospital, it seemed to be smooth sailing before the typical shenanigans really began.... Called to his second job, Ian and the team including a lending hand from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES, were faced with a common task - capture a baby plover stuck down a drain. The catch? The baby's family were nearby and very protective... Ian was assigned the difficult task: keeping the family distracted and as calm as possible while the baby could be freed. Not long later and it was another successful rescue counted for the day. To round out his shift Ian was tasked with a round of vet and community pick-ups. However, after arriving at one location Ian found an empty box and a Kingfisher bird flying around the ceiling. It's never a dull day when you're helping animals. If you’re keen to hop on the road and join the RSPCA Animal Ambulance team, apply to volunteer at www.rspcaqld.org.au/volunteer/volunteer-positions
