23.01.2022 A third of South Australians rent, but just over 20% of rental properties in SA even consider allowing pets. Every year due to being unable to find pet-friendly housing, distressed renters are forced to surrender their pets to shelters. In the past year, RSPCA SA has seen a 13% increase in the number of pets surrendered for this reason. Reform is needed and MLC Mark Parnell will bring the Residential Tenancies (Renting with Pets) Amendment Bill to a vote in the SA Parliamen...t on December 2, 2020 - to help allow renters to stay with their beloved pets in rentals. If successful, South Australia will join Victoria, the ACT and the NT in providing more pet-friendly properties. This Bill looks after owners’ interests too because tenants still need owners’ permission and if there is a disagreement between owners and tenants an independent Tribunal will consider all circumstances to make a fair decision. Help us keep renters and their beloved pets together and increase pet-friendly rentals www.rspcasa.org.au/pets-rentals

23.01.2022 CAUTION GRAPHIC IMAGE Meet Poppy. The poor darling couldnt even stand when she came into our care. She was miserable. Poppy was hit by a car, suffering several pelvic fractures including a major fracture to her left femur causing her crippling pain and the inability to stand. Due to the extent of these injuries, vets decided the kindest thing to do was amputate her left leg. ... As if she hadnt been through enough, little Poppy also suffered from pneumothorax, a condition caused by the trauma to her chest cavity... and then developed a moderate case of cat flu after surgery. Despite all this, she is currently in the hands of one of our skilled volunteer foster carers who is helping Poppy on her road to recovery. At this stage, further x-rays later this month will assess how her wounds and fractures are healing, and determine whether additional surgery is required. Poppy is only 10 months old and all we want is for her to live the rest of her life free from the pain shes grown accustomed to. However, as a charity 91% funded by community donations, her treatment has come at a great cost. Please, can you help this sweet girl by contributing to her ongoing treatment and recovery? Every bit will be so, so appreciated http://bit.ly/Poppys-Fund

22.01.2022 It is lucky our inspectors rescued Polly when they did, as she probably wouldn’t have survived much longer. With two massive hernias bulging from her groin, she was living in constant pain and discomfort. This sweet older Chihuahua X has spent the last two years forgotten and neglected in a backyard kennel surrounded by concrete and faeces. It is a miracle the huge lumps hadn’t split or burst already, given their size and her rough living conditions. ... If that wasn’t enough, she was also constantly scratching, as a result of an allergic skin condition, and suffering from dry eye, knee damage and respiratory difficulties. The good news is, with urgent hernia removal surgery, and ongoing treatment for her other conditions, Polly has a chance of living a happy, comfortable life, in a loving forever home. As a charity that relies on community support, we need your help to pay for this life-changing surgery. After all that time living in pain, Polly didn’t give up and we won’t give up on her either. Will you chip in to help give Polly the second chance she deserves? Every contribution makes a difference, please donate what you can to her emergency fund here > https://bit.ly/pollys-fund

20.01.2022 We've been having some wild weather lately and for some animals thunder and lightening can be extremely distressing Poor Stella was so terrified of the recent storms that she embarked on quite a journey, running from the Esplanade at Semaphore to a house on the way to Glanville train station Rescue Officer Krista and Volunteer Mel were able to get her to approach and put on a lead with some sweet doggy talk ... Fortunately Stella was microchipped and enjoyed cuddles from Mel while waiting for her extremely relieved owner who had been searching the streets for her Storms can be a stressful time for your pet and its important to help them feel as comfortable as possible so here's a few quick tips to help keep your pet safe: Bring your pets indoors in a secure and comfortable environment Provide access to a safe area where your pet may feel more at ease Engage with your pet and provide them with distractions like their favourite toy Avoid tethering your pets as this can lead to injury if they try and break free Ensure your pets are wearing ID tags and their microchip details are up to date

19.01.2022 Rabbits are naturally active, social, curious and intelligent animals deserving of your love and attention. Are your rabbits getting enough stimulation and environmental enrichment? Here are some of our top tips for keeping your rabbit happy: Firstly ensure their enclosure is sufficient in floor area and height to allow for jumping, hopping and running Use shredded paper, straw or hay on top of newspaper-covered flooring to allow natural digging behaviour... Add hiding places in their enclosure such as cardboard boxes Create some toys like food wrapped in paper, tunnels made from cardboard boxes, plastic flower pots hiding food, cat litter trays filled with soil for digging, and sturdy bird toys which rattle! Let your rabbit have some additional supervised outdoor activity for natural foraging and exercise And of course, human interaction; playing games and grooming are excellent forms of environmental enrichment See more

13.01.2022 Hi there, I'm Ruben I'm looking for a home to hang in! I'm quite the independent fella who likes my space and I may take a little while to settle in, but please don't rule me out because of it! If you can be patient with a nervous guy like me, you'll be sure to discover my affectionate side once I settle in. After all, we're all just looking for love, right? If you have an enclosed yard or cat run would be swell. But I am a big scaredy-cat when it comes to young children... so a home with older children or adults only would be best, please. I do quite enjoy pats and attention but I may swipe or nip to let you know when I’ve had enough (or when I want more!), it's a bit of a gamble really. If you think you're ready to welcome a cool cat like me into your love, book in to see me now! Bookings are essential and can be made at bit.ly/adopt-rspca. If appointments are booked keep an eye out on the site as we open up new appointments at the end of each day! #rspcasaadopt Animal ID: 159181 Location: Lonsdale shelter Adoption fee: $29 For information about me and to view other animals available visit: www.rspca.org.au/adopt-a-pet

12.01.2022 Something as small as a microchip can make all the difference, as cat owners Ashley and Alison learned from experience In early August, Ginger the cat was found at the Port Adelaide Yacht Club where he was taken into our care. Ginger was very friendly and microchipped, but unfortunately initial attempts to contact his family were unsuccessful as their details were not up to date. Thankfully, an old fashioned letter did the trick and after 4 months of being apart, the fami...ly were happily reunited! He is proof that microchipping does in fact work & we certainly need to update our phone numbers (as they have changed) on the Microchip Data Base. Its amazing he has been Missing in Action since the 15th April. His home is in One Tree Hill so I have no idea how he got to Port Adelaide!! Thanks again RSPCA, we are all so pleased that Ninja is back. We love a happy ending- remember to keep your details up to date!

11.01.2022 Hii, Im Felicia, named so because if you try to pat me its "Bye Felicia!". I recently had some very special and expensive eye surgery when I was with the RSPCA because my eyelashes grew towards my eyes... Ouch! It was super uncomfortable but now Im all better thanks to the vets so now Im looking for my forever castle. I quite like being near you, especially if youre eating (I LOVE food ) but please give me space when I snack. ... I love looking out the window and climbing nice tall things to sit on top of and also love playing with toys and zooming through the house. I would prefer to be an indoor-only cat because Id probably run away if you let me out. Basically I am a queen and deserve a throne. I have the potential to get along with another gentle, friendly cat but I can be stand-offish at first. I cant stress enough that my new furrr family will need A LOT of time and patience with me cause when I do things, its my way or the highway... Ill need a gentle, quiet and patient home to accept me for who I am and look Ill never likely be a lap cat but Id love your company while I rule your castle. If you think you meet my criteria and have a suitable home for me to rule, please come visit me at the Lonsdale shelter! I am currently situated in boarding, so you will need to ask staff if you would like to meet me. Bookings are essential and can be made at bit.ly/RSPCA-adopt. If appointments are booked, keep an eye out on the site as we open up new appointments at the end of each day. 10.01.2022 Warning** A happy ending story for a young, stray kitty who was trapped in barbed wire An eight-week-old kitten was heard screaming from between fences at Morphett Vale. Alex, manager of Salvos Store borrowed a ladder from the Gasworks team, across from her only to see that the kitty was entangled in barbed wired from cyclone fencing left behind between the Salvos store and Kennards Hire. Something has to be done pronto!... An assessment was conducted and wire cutters would be needed to cut the kitty free. One of the volunteers from the Salvos Store called her husband, Steve who immediately went and bought wire cutters from Mitre 10! John and the guys at Kennards were all keen to help save this kitty! John was able to crab walk some distance from the only narrow access point on their side of the fence, to reach the kitty. When Steve arrived with the wire cutters a short time later, John was able to cut free the kitty and place him into a carrier to keep him safe. The kitten was very stressed and still entangled in barbed wire. Steve and Alex worked quickly with the wire cutters to snip back as much wire as possible to reduce the risk of further injury. When examined at RSPCA, the kitten luckily escaped any injury, with the barbs having only been caught in his beautiful floof

10.01.2022 Hello there! My name is Tank and I'm 4 years old! I'm a bit shy at first and just like most humans, I can be a little unsure of myself when meeting new people. But if you feed me yummy treats and treat me with care, we are sure to become best friends! I'm an adventurous doggy and have jumped a 5ft fence before so my new home will need to have secure fences that are at least 6 ft! ... I love a good walk and it would be great if my new family could take me on lots of sniffing adventures! I can be a bit cheeky and have chased cats and birds before, so my shelter parents don’t think it is a good idea that I live with any of these animals. I have not met a lot of other dogs before so don’t have much experience with them but at the RSPCA I met a friendly girl dog and we would walk nicely on a lead together! If you have another dog at home, talk to my shelter parents about introducing us first to make sure we get along. I’d love to spend time with you, relaxing with your family, and friends. Bookings are essential and can be made at bit.ly/adopt-rspca. If appointments are booked keep an eye out on the site as we open up new appointments at the end of each day! Animal ID: 158723 Location: Lonsdale shelter Adoption fee: $250 For information about me and to view other animals available visit: www.rspca.org.au/adopt-a-pet

10.01.2022 The next of our native duck species to take the spotlight is the Australian Wood Duck These birds like to nest in tree holes and are great at teamwork, with both parents sharing the role of feeding their young. An easy way of telling the parents apart is to look for the eyes- female Wood Ducks have one white stripe above and one below their eyes. Have you spotted an Australian Wood Duck or another of our native duck species? Wed love to see your photos ... : Jeff Groves With avitourism becoming increasingly popular, ducks like the Australian Wood Duck are a draw to the state. Despite this, duck hunting is still allowed in SA with 71% in a recent poll stating they would be deterred from visiting an area where duck shooters were present. Duck hunting is banned in WA, NSW & QLD, but still allowed in SA, putting native waterfowl at risk. Aus studies suggest to 1/3 of all ducks shot will be wounded or crippled, not killed outright stand up for our waterbirds rspcasa.org.au/duck-shooting #igiveaduck

I like it best when I have the run of the house so I would prefer if I was the only cat and am best suited for a house with no young children or dogs I previously had access to both indoors and outdoors, so I would love a secure cat run/outdoor enclosure if possible If you can give me the kindness that I need come and meet me Bookings are essential and can be made at bit.ly/RSPCA-adopt. 08.01.2022 "He was really fearful of humans. Hed shutdown, he didnt want to engage with me at all... When I finally got close enough to touch him, I could feel through his matted fur that he was so severely underweight and his fur was crawling with fleas. He nearly starved to death. But Maxs story doesnt end there. Read about this brave boys remarkable survival www.rspcasa.org.au/maxs-story

05.01.2022 Shivering and alone, Max was found abandoned in the overgrowth of a northern suburb property. Poor Max was so severely emaciated our vets gave him one of the lowest body condition scores theyve ever given a dog If not for RSPCA Inspector Ryan, who knows how much longer Max could have survived. Will you give a gift to ensure our vets and animal care staff can continue to be there for animals like Max? bit.ly/Max-rescue

03.01.2022 This is it folks our biggest opportunity yet to finally say #byebyebatterycages in Australia! State and territory governments will soon be deciding whether to phase out barren battery cages or keep them indefinitely. The decision will have profound consequences for over 10 million layer hens that are confined to these cages every year in Australia and for millions more in the future. They need you to speak up for them, and help your state or territory government make the right decision for animal welfare! Head to rspca.org.au/take-action/layer-hens to show your support together we can put an end to this cruel and outdated practice once and for all!
