23.01.2022 Australia Post has just released a series of stamps to acknowledge the importance of Australian Botanical Gardens Seed Banks. At the RTBG half of each seed collection of Tasmanian native species is stored in the TSCC,(Tasmanian Seed Conservation Centre0 while the other half is sent to the MSBP (Millennium Seed Bank Project) in the UK as part of the global seed conservation effort. This collection is also an important back up for the collection remaining in Tasmania. In a smal...l way we also have something similar with our Heirloom Tomato Project with over 500 different varieties in our collection. This year we will be growing 37 golden tomato seed that was sourced from the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust earlier in the year. These tomatoes are rare in Australia.. We will be growing some plants for seed this summer to build up the collection. Although not as important as the work the Seed Bank does for conservation but it will preserve tomato seed varieties for the future. See more
