25.01.2022 This is big! The UN treaty banning nuclear weapons just reached the 50 ratifications it needs to enter into force. This means that in 90 days it will be binding international law. These 50 states are on the right side of history, but where is Australia? There's still work to be done - while sometimes it may seem an uphill battle, the struggle for peace is a fight for humanity & dignity the world over. #nuclearban

24.01.2022 Mass social distanced meeting at Bombardier West Melbourne! #RTBUstrong

23.01.2022 Please contribute to this appeal for the family of Belly Mujinga, a ticket officer in London who tragically died from COVID after a man spat on her and a colleague at work. Police have chosen not to press charges against her attacker. No worker should ever lose their life at work and all workers deserve justice regardless of their background, culture or class! https://www.gofundme.com/f/rip-belly-mujinga

22.01.2022 In response to questions posed by the RTBU to the Minister for Transport, it has been confirmed that funding has been maintained for the full public transport timetable. We continue to follow up on more localised questions with the major operators and other organisations within our industry. If you have any specific queries don't hesitate to contact the RTBU. We will update members with finer detail in the coming hours.

21.01.2022 Vale Bernard 'Bernie' Willingale. We are saddened to inform members that Bernie Willingale, former NSW AFULE and Locomotive Divisional secretary, passed away last Thursday on October 22nd, 2020. Bernie was the longest serving NSW Branch Secretary of the AFULE (Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Employees) from 1965 to 1986 and was re-elected to the role again from 1989 until retirement in 1995. While Bernie wasn't a Victorian, he was one of the most crucial and dedicat...ed figures in overseeing the amalgamation of all of our separate public transport unions in Australia into one united Union. His time as secretary helped shape the Union we have today. Bernie especially dedicated his life to improving working conditions for his members, carrying out tremendous research into working conditions and the effects of work fatigue that was internationally-recognised. The funeral will be held on Saturday 31st October. Due to limited spaces under current COVID-19 restrictions, the family will be streaming the service, as is the normal now. For those who would like to view details on attending the service in person or online, please contact the RTBU. Vale, Bernie Willingale.

20.01.2022 "I went to my first RTBUWomen meeting in October 2018, and it lit a fire in my belly... The opportunity to see the inner workings of my union and others was educational and empowering. I definitely recommend it for women keen to be more involved in their union and networking with the union sisterhood." - Dani, RTBU Womens Advocate

20.01.2022 V/Line Members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposed EA. 91% of members voted in favour of the agreement which delivers solid wages and conditions through to 2023.

18.01.2022 We're working to build and secure the sustainable jobs of the future (if you're a member reading this now, chances are you're already working in one!) The climate challenge must be addressed collectively and put workers in the front seat for our economy belongs to us all. As transport is set to be a major epicentre for improved sustainability, join us next Thursday and let us know of your thoughts or ideas by commenting below.

18.01.2022 Safeworking Solutions are offering hardworking employees a ONCE OFF guaranteed wage increase of only 1.75% over 4 years. Vote NO to the dodgy deal and protect the wages and conditions of all safeworkers and force SWS back to the bargaining table.

17.01.2022 Today South Australian rail workers are making a last ditch effort to stop the privatisation of public transport. They have run a strong campaign that recognises and builds on the issues have faced with privatisation in Victoria. Bad for workers, bad for commuters, and bad for tax payers: you can read the media release here.

16.01.2022 Hristos Tsirkas Lives On Yesterday an article was published in the Greek news celebrating the life and achievements of Hristos. This was misinterpreted by a number of sources who contacted the RTBU to inform us of the seemingly sad news. Overnight RTBU officials have been in direct contact with the family and can confirm that Hristos is in fact still alive. Hristos has risen! ... While he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and is in the good care of Auburn House and no longer sharing lemons and home-made olive oil with other delegates and friends, or RTBU merchandise with friends, family and comrades on his routine visits back to Greece, members are often found sharing stories of Hristos’ work and outlook from his time on the job. Since his retirement last year, the RTBU has kept up contact with Hristos who has offered so much to the building of our union and looking after fellow railway workers. Hristos continues to live on as a life member of the RTBU, someone who can continue to hold his head high as a former delegate and elected representative on numerous RTBU committees over many many years. As seriously as he takes the struggle for justice in the workplace, he pursues humanity between people. Sharing stories and jokes is deeply engrained in his personality and world outlook alike. While the past 12 hours have been a true roller coaster, Hristos is one who would always find the humour amidst the turmoil and we take this opportunity to once again celebrate his life, work and friendship.

15.01.2022 Great outcome following a long fought campaign to protect these high skilled manufacturing jobs. Shout out to RTBU legend Luke Cornish for his work day-in day-out looking out for all workers across the site.

15.01.2022 Today is Injured Workers Day. Join the movement or follow the feed to demand justice for all who battle injuries at work. Injured workers get a pretty raw deal - having to battle with insurance agents, being arbitrarily cut off from financial support and navigating the complex WorkCover system, all while trying to recover from a workplace injury. Find out more here: https://www.facebook.com/injuredworkersday

14.01.2022 Organiser Joe Dennis has been out and about catching up with Members and hitting the projects all over Victoria! Check your emails or ask your local delegate to find out when your next organiser visit is.

13.01.2022 This is the long term planning our city needs. Trains have a role to play in connecting suburbs with each other, not just suburbs with the city. Not only are short term rail construction jobs important today, but so are the ongoing sustainable transport service jobs of the future.

11.01.2022 Following months of negotiations across multiple sites, this new deal locks in better work/life balance, job security and protects against dodgy green fields deals that could otherwise undermine working conditions.

10.01.2022 The annual union HSR conference is taking place on 27 October. Employers across the rail and public transport industry have an obligation to release Health & Safety Reps to attend provided management is notified of the request 2 weeks ahead of the date. Has your local HSR registered and exercised their right to attend?... Share this post to spread the word and alert all other HSRs. Each work group should have one person attending as the elected HSR. If you do not know who this is or need to run an election, contact the RTBU so we can help.

10.01.2022 Thousands of new jobs to support the fast tracking of the Vic Govt’s Level Crossing Removal Program have just been announced, a further sign of a buoyant and secure future of growth in the rail and public transport industry. This comes off the back of more services and reduced off-peak fares to support better social distancing and public transport uptake announced yesterday, a strong sign of growth and stable jobs for public transport workers into the coming months.

08.01.2022 Today marks 8 years since the tragic Tazreen factory fire in Bangladesh that took the lives of over 130 textile workers. Fire escapes at the site had been locked to stop the already underpaid workers stealing from the factory, exacerbating the death toll. Garment workers to this day continue to fight for justice, safety and compensation for their trauma and loss from this preventable workplace tragedy. Tazreen Fashions manufactures garments for big brands around the world su...ch as Walmart and Target, brands obviously not big enough to demand better standards. The RTBU stands in solidarity with workers organising ongoing campaign activities including sit-ins and demonstrations in the struggle for justice.

08.01.2022 The RTBU extends our wishes for a Happy Diwali (festival of light) tomorrow, Saturday 14th of November.

06.01.2022 Union Members from the RTBU, ETU & AMWU today endorsed an agreement which delivers a massive blow to insecure work in the manufacturing sector of rail. This agreement includes: -34 fixed term jobs saved -Travel passes saved... -First rolling stock manufacturer with a 36 hour week -Full time conversion for casuals -Fixed termers till end of build -Full time maintenance jobs for manufacturing employees A big congratulations to members who did time on the grass delivering this outcome. Special shout out to the Delegates and Officials of the RTBU, ETU & AMWU who along with the Members, have made this win possible. IF YOU DON'T FIGHT, YOU LOSE!

06.01.2022 The RTBU welcomes the government’s commitment to building a tried and proven modern X’Trapolis fleet at Ballarat workshops. This order is the first step in providing long term certainty for rail workers in the region and stable work for the rolling stock industry. The RTBU will continue the fight to ensure this order is the first of many creating a rail manufacturing pipeline for the Ballarat workshops.

06.01.2022 In a time of booming rail projects we are glad to see that Activate Rail, TPA and Tenax have joined the likes of Skilled by agreeing in-principal to a new EA which further establishes the industry standard for the safeworking sector. While these EAs remain subject to drafting, it is encouraging to see that these safeworking companies have not sought to use the pandemic as a poor excuse to deny their workforce a fair pay rise. Once drafting is complete members across all three companies will gain access to the proposed agreement and a series of union meetings will be held to get feedback prior to a vote.

05.01.2022 Enough is enough! Sending Metro a message loud and clear. And another legendary William Butler Yeats quote from Delegate Paddy.

03.01.2022 RTBU Victoria stands with school students demanding a better future. Australian communities have been hit hard by the dual bushfire and coronavirus crises. We have an opportunity to build the future we can all thrive in by creating clean jobs that care for country, climate, and our communities. Instead the Federal Government and the Covid-19 Commission are secretly making plans to give billions of dollars in handouts to their mates in the gas industry, who will turbocharge t...he climate crisis and threaten First Nations lands, and ensure taxpayers miss out on the possible benefits of stimulus spending. On Friday September 25, School Strike for Climate are organising a national day of action to demand that our Government invests in our communities and fund our future, not gas. To join the day, all you need to do is get some friends together online or your household together offline, make the message clear ‘Fund Our Future Not Gas’, wear yellow, get some great photos, and send them to SS4C! Make sure to register your action so the government can see how many people want them to #FundOurFutureNotGas by heading to ss4c.info/sept25
