23.01.2022 We recently received an enquiry from an expectant mother about her parental leave rights. We were surprised to hear that she had no knowledge of her right to take UNPAID parental leave. In case there are others who are unsure about how unpaid parental leave works, here are a few quick reminders: Eligible employees (i.e. employees other than casuals who do not work on a regular and systematic basis) who have completed at least 12 months of continuous service, are entitled to p...arental leave. Eligible employees are entitled to unpaid parental leave if they comply with the notice and evidence requirements set out in the Fair Work Act; Eligible employees can take unpaid parental leave of up to 12 months; and Eligible employees can request to extend their unpaid leave for an additional 12 months, provided they comply with the notice and evidence requirements. While vision is important in any business, what we as individuals really want in a job is availability from our leaders. We want to know and feel that our managers and superiors are available to help where needed and steer us in the right direction. We want assurance that we are not in this journey alone and we are a part of a supportive team that is working towards a common goal. As an Employment Lawyer, I... frequently see how a lack of availability by superiors can lead to workplace conflict. You feel like your managers are unapproachable. Youre afraid to ask questions or knock on their door for help because youre always seen as a disruption to something more important. You feel like any questions you ask are just going to trigger performance management action. And so, you stay quiet and the problem grows. Unfortunately, it has become very common during COVID-19 and in many cases it is unlawful. Please do yourself a favour and before you go ahead and sign anything, make sure you understand its effect, particularly how it impacts your job in the long term. Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you understand what your options are as well as the consequences of agreeing to the proposed changes. Have you ever been in a position where you have spent (what feels like) an entire lifetime dreaming and planning something important, only for your plans to ultimately fail? I think anyone who has really lived and attempted to achieve a sizable goal will know that ‘Plan A’ doesn’t always work out (in fact it seldom does).... The secret is to never give up! If 2020 taught us anything it was the art of ‘pivoting.’ Change your plan, never the goal. Get frustrated for a bit, sure, but don’t give up. 06.01.2022 I stumbled across this quote some years ago and absolutely loved it. At the time, I was undergoing a transition in my own career and battling the common fear of what if it doesnt work out. I had dedicated years to climbing the ladder. As a young woman, this meant proving why I deserved a seat at the table in the first place. While I enjoyed the experience and opportunities the role brought, there came a point where I felt like respect was no longer being served. I had ac...hieved all that the role had to offer. I had a spot at the table but there was nowhere else that it could take me. At this point I knew I had more to offer and so the time came to leave the table. Having been through this experience, I understand the roller coaster of emotions and questions that go through your head. Add to the mix any workplace conflict or bullying and harassment and youre bound to end up terrified. Sadly, these fears can force us to stay at the table, even when respect has stopped being served. It can cause us to endure our career rather than thrive in it. You've spilt coffee on your shirt before a meeting. Forgotten to take your lunch to work. Or are running late due to traffic. Or you could be experiencing challenges in your workplace and are finding it difficult to feel positive. While it may seem counterintuitive, research suggests that when we are experiencing negative emoti...ons, it causes us to analyse our problems and take action. For example, this could mean taking a stand and confronting the issues you are facing by seeking professional advice. Do remember that everyone experiences a mix of good and bad days. It is normal to feel a bit "off" or not your usual self. It doesn't mean that the feelings of unhappiness are going to last, however it may be a sign that you need to take a break or make a change in an area of your life. 01.01.2022 Hands up if you are experiencing a challenging season right now? With so much disruption during Covid-19, I don't think there is a single person who hasn't experienced some sort of turmoil in their lives as a result. For most of us, embracing change can be difficult, especially when it is not in our grand scheme of plans, or our world has been altered unexpectedly.... For me personally, I have found that even if the season I am in makes me uncomfortable, there are many reasons to embrace the cooler, more frosty periods of life. Nature's timing is perfect. During winter, many animals hibernate and plants are able to store up the energy they need in order to grow during spring. Polar opposites are essential in life, as they allow us to gain true perspective. Without winter, we couldn't appreciate the warmth or spring and summer, or the anticipation of good things to come.
