24.01.2022 Our new booklet, Ten ways to improve natural assets on a farm, highlights some of the ways that farmers can create havens for wildlife, shelter for stock and lo...vely, well-vegetated areas on their farms. In this article three of our ecologists, Dan Florance, Dave Smith and Colleen O'Malley, share some of their insights into the multiple benefits that can come from planting shelterbelts, protecting rocky outcrops or fencing farm dams. 22.01.2022 Catching caterpillars. It's all in a day's work at the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board. Landscape Officers David, Ben and Ronnie collected more than 1000 ve...ry tiny and hopefully very hungry plume moth caterpillars in the Barossa Valley today. What’s great about these caterpillars is that they only eat horehound, a noxious weed that takes over paddocks, catches in sheep wool and taints milk and meat. Now we’ve bundled them up, the next step is to share them with landholders who want a low-cost and chemical-free way to tackle horehound infestations on their properties. We’ll release the army of caterpillars at 22 properties and then let them get to work. Nature at its best! Do you have a horehound issue at your place? Get in touch with us on 8841 3400 to express your interest. . . . 10.01.2022 George Wilson, Melanie Edwards & Neil Byron have been studying extinctions and threatened species in Australia. Their work confirmed that most biodiversity loss...es have occurred on private lands and that national parks are insufficient to reverse the alarming trend. Their paper proposes a new model that could increase the abundance and distribution of Australia's biodiversity, while at the same time providing financial incentives to private landholders to undertake this important work. You can read their paper "Custodianship of wildlife on private land to support conservation an Australian model" at https://www.publish.csiro.au/RJ/pdf/RJ20039 See more

This Welcome Swallow was in a large group swooping a...bove a canola crop just west of Coonabarabran. Welcome Swallows feed on a wide variety of insects, and research studies have found that swallows may be able to significantly reduce crop pest insect populations. https://eorganic.org/node/21859
