18.01.2022 Wellbeing Wednesday - The world keeps changing around me. How to cope with COVID-19 changes? 2020 has been a very difficult year for everyone, from a heavy bushfire season to COVID-19 turning the whole world upside-down. It has been especially difficult for all Victorians, who have had to adapt to many levels of change, and now that we are slowly returning to some form of normality, although we are very happy and looking forward to the releasing of restrictions, this can also... be another challenging time. Firstly, we need to accept that things are not going to go back to exactly the way it was prior to COVID-19, we still need to be mindful of limited restrictions in place and be mindful that we have all experienced a significant and shared traumatic event this year. Adapting to changes in life can be challenging on a good day, however we have gone through many levels of change thus far, and there may be more to come. So how do we make it easier for us to adapt to change. 1. Acknowledge the change that has occurred, give it a name, then think about it, or talk to someone about it. This will normalise the change and assist you to approach the change from different points of view. How can you look at the change in a funny light? How can you look at the change in a positive light? 2. Think about small goals for yourself around the change, approach the change head-on and use it to grow yourself, make the best of what is in front of you. Facing changes in life can be a difficult time when you resist the change, the more we fight change, the more difficult it can be on our minds and body. Change is evitable for all of us, we need to ride the wave of change and embrace it. What have people struggled with the most in changing of restrictions? What are people most keen to get back too? How can you use the lifting of restrictions to catch up with friends & family? Feel free to comment. If you would like further information on Wellbeing support, you can visit: www.wellmob.org.au Or you can contact Kevin Singh on 0401-879-822. Proud. Strong. 16.01.2022 Late post for Wellbeing Wednesday, but just in time for the weekend and some sunshine :) For true health and wellbeing we need to consider how we feel inside and outside, this is where our mental and physical health come together to promote a healthy sense of self. 16.01.2022 Wellbeing Wednesday - Christmas is a time to get together How to navigate a busy time spent with others. Christmas time can be a very joyful and busy time for people, there can be occasions when we are around many others who are friends and/or family.... At times, this can also be a challenging time of the year for people. Being around others can present obstacles and put us in difficult situations, we may be asked and/or told to do things we may not be keen on. We may be asked private questions which we may not want to reveal to others, this can cause people stress and anxiety around the holiday period. When we need to communicate with others, it is very important for us to be aware of ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION and HEALTHY BOUNDARIES. These 2 facets of communication can set the tone for our interactions and coping with difficult conversations. ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION is when a person communicates with others in a positive manner, the person stands up for their needs and wants, while also respecting the needs and wants of the other person. Passive communication is being submissive and giving into others needs and wants, over your own, talking about things you don’t want to talk about. Aggressive communication is being rude and only focusing on your needs and wants, not listening to others and taking over conversations. ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION is a balance between the 2 communication styles, when you are respectful of yourself and others in conversation. HEALTHY BOUNDARIES is when we feel comfortable with the relationships around us, this includes the rules and limits we set for ourselves and what we feel comfortable with from others. Soft boundaries is when we find it hard to say no, we let others take control of us, we accept what others want/expect/tell us to do. Rigid boundaries is when we are unable to compromise with others, we only want things our way, we order others about and not respect who they are as individuals. HEALTHY BOUNDARIES is a balance between the 2 styles and doing what we feel comfortable with. The different types of boundaries we should consider when dealing with others are, our; physical boundaries, intellectual boundaries, emotional boundaries, sexual boundaries, material boundaries, and time boundaries. Have a think about your boundaries and communication style this holiday season, what has been challenging in previous holiday seasons, what do you want to do different this year. Feel free to comment. If you would like further information on Wellbeing support, you can visit: www.wellmob.org.au Or you can contact Kevin Singh on 0401-879-822. Proud. Strong. 15.01.2022 Wellbeing Wednesday: Practicing Gratitude Gratitude means to be thankful for all the things that we have in our lives, no matter how small it may appear. In a world of so much materialistic items, it is very easy to get caught up in what we don’t have, or what we need to buy to make us happy. However, when we are thankful or grateful for the things we have, it has been shown to have a powerful effect on our health and wellbeing. Gratitude can reduce stress, increase happiness... and improve our self-esteem. Gratitude exercises can totally change the way we approach our days and outlook on life. Gratitude can be simple to practice, finish the sentences below and ask yourself these questions every day; I am grateful for my family because I am grateful for my culture because I am grateful for who I am because Something silly that I am grateful for is I am grateful for today because Now take a moment, thinking about how you feel after Practicing Gratitude. 13.01.2022 The term ‘Social & Emotional Wellbeing’ is used by many Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people to describe the social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural wellbeing of a person. This term recognises the important connection a person has to their land, culture, spirituality, family, and community to truly feel content, and positive in life. Life can and will, throw many challenges at us which can impact on our wellbeing, this can range from everyday stress and/or major life... events (like COVID-19). This is when we need turn to each other for strength and understanding The ongoing outbreak of the coronavirus COVID-19 has impacted on many people, in many different ways. At this stage, it continues to be an ever evolving process, as we move into further restrictions this week, we need to remember that such uncertain times can impact on our Social Health and Wellbeing. Some important wellbeing tips to practice while we move into stage 3 restrictions include; 1. Develop a regular daily routine: a routine will keep you focused, while also giving you a purpose throughout your day. It is easy to become complacent without a routine, this can impact on your self-worth and turn into bad habits. A daily routine can include; meal times, exercise/work/hobby time, family time etc. 2. Keep up physical activity: this can include any form of training or exercise (walking etc.). Physical activity releases positive brain receptors which can fight off sadness and depressed feelings. 3. Get outside when you can: It is important for us to get fresh air and sunlight to assist in our sense of wellbeing and connection to land (Please keep relevant restrictions and physical distancing in mind when outside). 4. Stay positive: Remind each other that this event will pass, keep focused on the end target and how well YOU have done so far through this. If you would like further information on Wellbeing support, you can visit: www.wellmob.org.au Or you can contact Kevin Singh on 0401-879-822. Proud. Strong. 09.01.2022 Wellbeing Wednesday - The Way I Think Part 1 Have you ever wondered why we are so hard on ourselves, and why we tend to over-think and over-criticise what we do. This phenomena is called ‘Cognitive Distortions’, and we all have this way of thinking, we are always much harder on ourselves due to these automatic thoughts. I have listed the most common forms of cognitive distortions below, think about which ones you can relate to and how this cognitive distortion has impacted y...ou. 1. Catastrophising Seeing only the worst possible outcomes to situations. 2. Overgeneralisation Making broad interpretations from small or single events. 3. Jumping to Conclusions Interpreting the meaning of things with little to no evidence at all. 4. Mind-Reading Interpreting the thoughts, belief and actions of other with little to no evidence at all. 5. Fortune Telling The expectations that things will turn out to be a certain way with little to no evidence at all. 6. All or Nothing Only thinking about things in absolutes like; always, never & every. 7. Should Thinking The belief that things should be a certain way only, with little to no evidence. 8. Non-positive Thinking Recognising only the negative aspects of things, and not including the positives which have occurred. Cognitive Distortions all fall into the category of negative human thinking, unfortunately, this can be a normal way of thinking for a lot of people. The good news is, we can all take back control of our thoughts. How do you think we can do this? Feel free to comment below. If you would like further information on Wellbeing support, you can visit: www.wellmob.org.au Or you can contact Kevin Singh on 0401-879-822. Proud. Strong. 09.01.2022 Wellbeing Wednesday - NAIDOC week reflections Self-reflection is our strongest tool. As it is NAIDOC week and we celebration the First Nations people, it is also important to celebrate who you are as a person.... The 2020 NAIDOC week theme is Always Was, Always Will Be. This is an amazing time to reflect on your person journey and where you would like to take things moving forward. Self-reflection helps you to understand the true power we possess inside every day. Take some time out today to think and/or write about your past, present and future. Your Past: Think / Write about where you have come from, consider the challenges you have overcome, what personal strengths have got you here, what surprised you about who you were. Your Present: Think / Write about where you are now, consider how you are different today, what are your personal strengths today, what current challenges are you facing, what surprises you about who you are now. Your Future: Think / Write about where you would like to be in the future, what would the ideal you look like and how would your life be different, what personal strengths have to continued to develop, what are 3 personal goals you have achieved over time, what can you do from tomorrow to make this reality happen. 02.01.2022 Hey you mob! As of Wednesday 22 July 11.59pm everyone 12 years old and over, living in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will HAVE to wear a face coveri...ng (can be a hospital or home made mask or a scarf) when outside their home to protect them from COVID-19. Even at the supermarket, doctor's, going for a walk, everywhere. There will be a $200 fine for those not wearing one. Cloth masks are a sensible option as this is something that will need to be used for some time, and disposable masks will be expensive and bad for the environment. Simple coverings like a scarf or bandana over your mouth and nose don’t work very well, but can be used if you don’t have anything else - using a triple layer cloth mask is a much better option. Remember to not touch the front before or after use, wash them in soapy warm water and physical distancing and hygiene are still important. Info: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/face-masks-covid-19. You must still continue washing your hands, sneeze into your elbow or tissue, maintain 1.5m distancing, stay inside and get tested if you have (even mild) symptoms. There is information on making and wearing masks at https://bit.ly/2CafiiI There are some reasons not to wear one: those who have a medical reason kids under 12 years of age those who have a professional reason it’s just not practical, like when running Teachers don’t have to wear a face covering while teaching but students attending for VCE, VCAL or for onsite supervision will, while everyone will be expected to wear one to and from school. However you will still be expected to carry your face covering at all times to wear when you can. Otherwise, if you’re leaving your home for one of the four reasons, you need to cover your face. REGIONAL VICTORIA Face coverings in regional Victoria are recommended in situations where 1.5 metres distance is not possible however regional Victorians will have to wear a mask when visiting metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire for one of the permitted reasons. Wearing a face mask does not apply to: children under 2 years of age people with breathing difficulties people who have physical conditions that make it difficult to wear one. Remember, if you're sick you should stay at home unless you need medical care. You can find more information on keeping safe, restrictions etc. at http://www.vaccho.org.au/about-us/coronavirus/

02.01.2022 Wellbeing Wednesday: ‘What is Mindfulness’ There is a lot of talk about Mindfulness these days, but what does Mindfulness mean. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment, in whatever you are doing. You can practice mindfulness while walking, resting, eating and even playing sports, just to name a few.... The practice of mindfulness helps us to be aware of what is happening around us and to slow our thoughts down. We live in a very busy world and our mind is constantly thinking. If we think too much about the past, this can bring up feelings of sadness, regret and grief. If we thinking too much about the future, this can bring up feelings of fear, anxiety and frustration. Being mindful helps us to focus on what is right in front of us, it can give us the strength to overcome many challenges, promote wellbeing and feel happier within. To be good at mindfulness, it will take practice. ‘Smiling Minds’ is a fantastic free app to start your mindfulness training. If you would like further information on Wellbeing support, you can visit: www.wellmob.org.au Or you can contact Kevin Singh on 0401-879-822. Proud. Strong.
