Nic Price. 20 November 2013. http://www.heraldsun.com.au///story-fngnvlpt-1226764338472 A cyclist on Wellington St, Collingwood where Yarra Council plans to install Copenhagen bike lanes. Source: News Corp Australia Plan for the first "Copenhagen" bike lanes in Yarra have been thrown into turmoil after councillors were warned it may put a popular gay baths out of business. Councillors committed in February to separate lanes in Wellington St, Collingwood, but traders have continued to campaign against the loss of up to 117 car parks on the grounds it threatened their viability. >> Do you want "Copenhagen" bike lanes in Yarra? Tell us below or email [email protected] The project is now in limbo after councillors failed to back the design process last night, with a showdown vote looming on December 17. Wet on Wellington manager Shane Gardner told the meeting that the baths customers relied on on-street parking and 30 jobs would be at risk if car parking was removed. "We get up to 1000 people coming to the venue on Sunday most people travel by car," Mr Gardner said. "We cant afford this loss of parking. If the bike lane goes ahead we would probably turn the building into apartments." Under the plan, bike lanes would be moved to the kerb - with parked cars acting as a barrier between bikes and traffic - between Victoria Pde and Johnston St. Labor councillors and independent Phillip Vlahogiannis have never supported the project, citing the impact on businesses, but they were outvoted in February by the Greens, Socialist Stephen Jolly and Mayor Jackie Fristacky. Cr Jolly said the claims of businesses were overstated. "The fact is we have had a whole lot of accidents between bikes and cars on that street. With more and more cyclists we have to make it as safe as possible," Cr Jolly said. Cr Fristacky, who abstained from last nights vote, could not be reached for comment.

08.01.2022 Interesting double kerb solution with a double step up on the southern extension to the Kent Street Cycleway outside St Andrews School and Town Hall House. Hopefully this works to make stray pedestrians aware of the passing parade. Look before you step off the kerb kiddies!
