25.01.2022 Check out my set up for the virtual Revolve24. to my partners: Trek Bicycle, Lets Go Motorhomes, Wagner Roofing Company, prism.bike, BikeExchange, Shimano-Road, Koda Nutrition, Albion Cycles, Crossing the Line Sport, Rudy Project Australia, Marko Baloh ultra-cyclist, TourXOz, Tony Kiss, Easts Cycling Club

25.01.2022 Now more than ever, we need something to look forward to. So come join me as I chat about my most recent adventure! On 20 July 2021 I’m intending to hold a Tour and Tell night reflecting on my journey from Darwin to Adelaide; 3,700kms in just over 12 days on a bike. You’ll hear all about the challenges on the road including fire, 60 knot headwinds, dangerous roads, a bout of Sherman’s neck and border closures. There are limited spaces available, so make sure to grab your ti...cket ASAP. We will postpone the event should circumstances change. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/guinness-on-tap-tales-from-the Photo by Nathan Roderick Thanks as always to my sponsors: Wagner Roofing Company, Lets Go Motorhomes, G Brothers Mercedes-Benz Sydney Australia, Trek Bicycle, prism.bike, Albion Cycles, Easts Cycling Club, SBS Australia, Koda Nutrition, Suunto, Rudy Project Australia, Revolve24, Crossing the Line Sport, TourXOz, Marko Baloh ultra-cyclist #powerofthepedal #connectingpeople #connectingminds #mentalwellbeing #ultracycling #covidstayaway

24.01.2022 Day 11 and I have approximately 543kms left to be an official VRAAM Finisher. It seems so close, and yet, still so far away. "This is one of those traps - thinking the finish is there. It's really not. It's still a long way to go before you can start thinking of the finish....although...I have thought of the finish. I'll admit it. 24.01.2022 FRIDAY: Sydney in her finest ... A stunning day. On the Manly ferry to lunch

24.01.2022 NOTHING BETTER: On a cold Saturday winters night with a 7 hour ride planned for Sunday, homemade beef bourguignon pie with vegetables (beautifully cooked by my far better partner in life, my wife Libby) prepares me well ... and happily (yes, with a glass or two!)

24.01.2022 Thanks for having me ABC Adelaide.

22.01.2022 Thank you Koda Nutrition for all your help with my nutrition and hydration. Just 30 hours left to go.

21.01.2022 I'm just 216kms from qualifying as a VRAAM Finisher. 21.01.2022 John Iffy Trevorrow asked me to join his #deTour podcast for a chat about all things cycling - well, in my life as a journalist and cyclist. Its a life that more recently has been focused on ultra-distance cycling in events like VRAAM, Revolve24, Indian Pacific Wheel Race and Race Across America that is my 2021 goal after its cancellation in 2020 due to COVID. Its been a roller coaster life of highs and lows, but thats part of the package of life. So no regrets. I am extremely grateful. Thanks Iffy for the chat and BikeExchange and Lets Go Motorhomes - two of my sponsors - for backing this series of podcasts. If not my podcast, listen to the others!

21.01.2022 SATURDAY: I really love the 2021 Trek Madone (pictured, bottom right) that Ive ridden over last weeks. Today, I picked up my other new bike for my journey towards @raceacrossamerica next year - the 2021 Trek Emonda. I have the bikes (and more on their specifics later). I now havecto get the engine ready! Hope to confirm some news on my pathway towards RAAM very soon. Suffice to say, Im excited. @@trekbikesau VRAAM Wagner Roofing Company Lets Go Motorhomes Albion Cycles

21.01.2022 NO WORDS: Are needed for this book. The images bring back a flood of memories of my VRAAM experience a couple of months ago. A very nice and surprising gesture today from my good mate Nothin'ButShorts International's Anthony Gordon who was not only to be my crew chief for Race Across America (cancelled due to Covid, but for which I an entry for next year), but also the mastermind behind VRAAM. Thanks so much mate. Wagner Roofing Company Trek Bicycle Lets Go Motorhomes G Brothers Mercedes-Benz Sydney Australia

21.01.2022 SUNDAY, Sydney: A day that began and came to its end with a golden glow. In between, 184km of cycling with some great mates that reminded how spring is around the corner and that I not only appreciate what I have, but that in these times many are struggling. Hoping in the next days/weeks Ill be able to unveil in line with a super group of partners some plans on how we can try to contribute to help others ...

20.01.2022 EMOTIONAL DAY: It was time today to return the 2020 Trek Bicycle Émonda to Albion Cycles a few weeks after doing the same with the Trek Madone that I rode to eighth place in VRAAM - a moment I thoroughly enjoyed. They are both absolutely superb bikes for different reasons. But Im looking forward to how far I can go in this world of ultra-distance cycling with Trek. Some plans are afoot, of course all with Race Across America in mind. Watch this space in the next couple of days. Until then ... Ill be spending Wednesday and Thursday training on the indoor bike at Regenesis Fitness in Sydney.

20.01.2022 Im narrowing in on 360kms to go to be an official @vraammentalmiles Finisher. This is one of those traps - thinking the finish is there. Its really not. 20.01.2022 Still absorbing it all, VRAAM, but I will be forever grateful for having been able to race it and work with such a great team behind me, from our planning days to the event and, I hope, toward Race Across America 2021. Meantime, here's a big shout out to Nothin'ButShorts International's Anthony Gordon who was not only my crew chief, but also produced the documentary 'Mental Miles,' which captures our journey from where it began to now ... Thank you so much, mate for this, and for including this latest story by you in your ever extending library of great works ... *Thank you so much too, @TroyPeters for all your photos (let alone great work as our medico); especially this fantastic one below with the documentary cover of me in deep thought

20.01.2022 The mind is still a tad foggy about the Virtual Race Across America VRAAM, from my many thoughts to the happenings en-route to my 8th place, a result I could not have achieved without my terrific support crew, sponsors and partners. Thank goodness for Anthony Gordon who was not just my crew chief and mastermind behind VRAAM that was created after the Race Across America (RAAM) was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic, but was there to capture the experience in his highly laude...d career as a videographer and storyteller. Gordo has been by my side since I took up ultra-endurance cycling in late 2016 when I told him I wanted to ride in the 2017 Indian Pacific Wheel Race to VRAAM, an event he created to fill the void from RAAMs cancellation. RAAM 2021 is next on what is becoming an ever extending agenda. Meantime, Gordo has just released his latest documentary, Mental Miles. Shot in isolation for the most part, Mental Miles provides a first-hand look into my journey thus far, culminating with the 12 days of my VRAAM ride. It certainly helps me recall what unfolded. For those of you interested, it also provides an inside look into my experience. Mental Miles is AVAILABLE NOW (with Bonus RAAM Feature). 17.01.2022 Hi there. It's Wagner Roofing Company here rolling into Annapolis, because Rupe is supposed to be here. We wanted to show him the way. All of you VRAAM-ers out there - we'll look forward to seeing you next year.

17.01.2022 Found some ink in the pen! So, as Le Tour approaches its crucial third week, I wrote a few 'half glass full' thoughts on Australia's presence of only two riders in the race for SMH Sport and The Age. There is still some ink left.

16.01.2022 Nice to see Richie Porte on back page of SMH Sport today after his Le Tour de France podium ...

16.01.2022 I never felt the calm shown by Richie Porte en route to his thoroughly deserved podium finish in Le Tour de France was new ... It was there despite his misfortunes. He just needed a fair crack at it, much like Cadel Evans When it came both seized it. https://www.smh.com.au//porte-in-a-storm-calm-during-crisi

16.01.2022 IT'S OVER: - At 7pm (Sydney time) on Sunday, the clock finally ticked over to close off the vR24 (virtual Revolve24). I meant to post this when it finished, but I was a little wobbly in the body, and mind! But this is the moment: my first impressions. I am a little gibberish here ... but it is what it is, how it happens ... suffice to say it was a really hard 24 hours, a block that included a lot more climbing than I anticipated. I was very happy though with 7th place among t...he 24 Hour soloists with 554km at 7878m elevation and first in my 55-59 age group. Big thanks to event organiser David Fell for putting on another great event, and to everyone for your support, especially to Fred Balbonii and Geoff Collins. Two super and very special people! Thanks also, as always, to my sponsors and partners: Trek Bicycles Australia, Lets Go Motorhomes, Wagner Roofing Company, prism.bike, BikeExchange, Shimano-Road, Koda Nutrition, Albion Cycles, Crossing the Line Sport, @Rudy Project Australia, Marko Baloh ultra-cyclist, TourXOz, Tony Kiss, Easts Cycling Club

16.01.2022 It’s been a light week on the bike, spent tapering for the virtual Revolve24 race (vR24) that starts at 7pm (Sydney time) on Saturday and in which I will race the solo 24-hour category. But I had a great wind up to my preparation, riding in the 2020 TourXOz in the Hunter Valley wine region of NSW last Friday before cycling home to Sydney on Saturday. The TourXOz aims to raise awareness and funds to help mental well-being. Due to COVID-19, it was restricted to a one day event... against the tours of past years. But it was still a terrific way to keep up the momentum of this important work. It was also great to catch up with the friends I made in last year’s TourXOz from Cairns to Cape York on mountain bike, and meet others who have ridden past editions. The messages and memories will provide plenty of inspiration for this weekend’s vR24. Thanks as always to my sponsors: Trek Bicycle, Lets Go Motorhomes, Wagner Roofing Company, prism.bike, BikeExchange, Shimano-Road, Koda Nutrition, Revolve24, Albion Cycles, Crossing the Line Sport, Rudy Project Australia, Marko Baloh ultra-cyclist, TourXOz, Tony Kiss, Easts Cycling Club, Entoure by me, edited by Sally Heginbotham

15.01.2022 SUNDAY: The beef bourguignon pie worked a treat for my 7hr ride today. With this years postponed @letourdefrance due to start Saturday, my 180kms gave me plenty of time to think of the race - from who might dow what this year with my Tour preview that I have to write in mind, back to where it all began with my first Tour in 1987 when I had hair and had been inspired by the feats of Phil Anderson - and still am.

14.01.2022 I am getting all my ducks in line with an eye on some exciting upcoming cycling projects. I am thrilled that my partnership with Trek Bicycle is continuing on from last year. Some of you will have seen that I am now riding their new 2021 Madone and the Emonda models. But what is new is that Shimano-Road has come on board as a partner for bike componentry. This has been a really exciting development for which I am really grateful.... Meanwhile, my equipment manager, Frank Conceicao of Albion Cycles in Waverley, Sydney has done a terrific job in fitting out both of my Trek bikes with Shimano’s Di2 componentry. With my two Trek bikes ‘singing,’ I’m confident that so long as my health and training continues well, I’ll be as prepared as possible for what awaits, including the Race Across America (RAAM) that I was to have raced this year until COVID-19 forced it to be cancelled. But it’s not all about RAAM. I am building an exciting program leading up to the big event. It includes our Out-Reach Tours to heighten awareness of mental well-being that we launched in Bathurst, NSW last weekend, as well as a number of charity rides and ultra-distance races like the virtual Revolve24 or vR24 that will be held on November 21-22. I’ll have more updates in coming weeks. In the meantime, feel free to join me for the ride! I am forever grateful to my sponsors and partners for making this all possible: Trek Bicycle, Lets Go Motorhomes, Wagner Roofing Company, prism.bike, BikeExchange, Shimano-Road, Koda Nutrition, Revolve24, Albion Cycles, Crossing the Line Sport, Rudy Project Australia, Marko Baloh ultra-cyclist, TourXOz , Tony Kiss, Easts Cycling Club by Sally Heginbotham

14.01.2022 That’s a wrap! The inaugural Cycling NSW Out-Reach Tour to Bathurst is done. We came with a simple purpose - to connect through stories of mental health. And we’ve left really inspired by the Bathurst community, not just by their welcome but how they engaged. It was a real exchange of stories and emotions. We learned a lot and look forward to spreading the message with other rural and regional communities. Big thanks to all involved especially Cycling NSW and Bathurst Cycling... Club. , as always, to my partners: Trek Bicycle, Lets Go Motorhomes, Wagner roofing company, prism.bike, BikeExchange, Shimano Australia Cycling, Koda Nutrition, Revolve24, Albion Cycles, Crossing the Line Sport, Rudy Project Australia, Marko Baloh, TourXOz, Tony Kiss, Easts Cycling Club by Sally Heginbotham

10.01.2022 Its been a big day for me completing a mission I set out to do a year ago. Ive not only completed the 3,248km to be qualified a VRAAM Finisher, but pushed all the way through until the end of the race to hit 3,381kms in 12 days. Ive gotten through VRAAM in good health. I feel strong. Funnily enough, I got stronger as the race went on, and thats reflective of how the support crew has nurtured me through this. Huge kudos to Hirokazu Suzuki the overall provisional winner w...ho completed the full 4,542km. 07.01.2022 MONDAY, Aug 10: Seems ages ago since the whirlwind of VRAAM and my 8th place. High peak events can often be followed by emotional dips - I have had them before. But experience helps, and the last weeks since VRAAM have been super - still rode (and to a lighter program), but also cut myself some slack. Think we all need to do that. Time has also allowed me to think about goals, priorities and responsibilities (and to gain a few kilos!) I now feel fresh, super fresh in mind and... body. Receiving the new @Trek Madone 2021 model has helped! But I also so grateful for the opportunities that await me. Had a super chat with my coach Marko Baloh ultra-cyclist today after my weekly rest day walk ... As I have with others in my support crew, I want to really thank Marko. The training is hard, challenging but also balanced. If you are not enjoying it, you are not doing it right, he says. I can honestly say I enjoyed the last year so much, every bit of it - yes, the hard bits when I suffered too. His program helped take me to a new level, while still enjoying my life as I do. With some respite since VRAAM, I have started writing a new book and am ready to prepare for the next level, for @raceacrossamerica 2021. That I am as keen for RAAM as I was a year ago before COVID struck, maybe more so, says something about Markos training (again, as well as those people who are supporting me.) I just wanted to share my view of Marko as a coach ... even if we are half a world apart! See more

02.01.2022 I will miss Greg Growden big time; like so many, but none more so than his loving family to whom my thoughts and condolences rest with. I have read so many beautiful tributes to Growdy since he passed away ... I have come out of the block very slow here, but I have been struggling to find the words ... So much stands out about Growdy that many have written and spoken about so eloquently and from the deepest of their hearts already, so I won't even try to repeat that; other th...an to say he was a terrifically bold and beautiful writer. The gathering of past and present colleagues on Monday night was a really nice time to reflect, but as always there were so many stories, it is hard to compartmentalise them all! One thing I will keep close to my heart (among many things) is that twinkle in his blue eyes when he was up for something big - from a story, to the big occasion to some simple but great banter (oh ... there are no shortage of rib breaking anecdotes). I will be forever grateful for a close friendship that spawned before we worked together on SMH Sport, but also for the opportunity he opened up for me to join the SMH and work with him on the rugby union round, to his counsel after we both left the SMH to chat about past travels, book ideas we had brewing and progress on books we were writing ... and even for the rare moments of disagreement. With Growdy as a mate came the full package of what mateship is about - from the fun and the help to the honesty that sometimes had a sting in the tail, but honesty delivered because he cared about you as a mate. Thank you for everything, mate. RIP See more

02.01.2022 CHEERS: To Daniel Oakman on another fabulous book. I just received this copy of Wild Ride - Epic Journeys Through The Heart of Australia. How doI know its fabulous so quick? I had the great honour of writing the Foreword and for that role got an advance read. But really, its fabulous. Im furiously plotting and planning with it now by my side. Congratulations Dan, and thank you for again reminding us of Australias unique and rich cycling heritage ... one we can still rediscover for ourselves through works like yours and if one wants, by riding the routes (all or part of) that you write about!
